Their caring nature and excellent organisational skills definitely stood out on the night as they supported their teams. Great role models and a terrific start to 2017! TWILIGHT SPORTS Thank you to everyone for attending last Thursday’s twilight sports. It was great to see all the students dressed in their House colors. It was also fantastic to see families all decked out too! We almost had every student in attendance which is a great effort. If you have registered for interviews (you are linked in), you will receive an email containing our communication. ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES Next assembly on Mon 20, 5/6D will be sharing their learning at assembly. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2017 - #BeBoldForChange Yesterday was International Women’s Day! There are so many great ways to challenge bias and inequality and to provide positive role models for the young women and children in our schools. I have particularly loved the Women’s AFL competition and recently read the following article which is pretty inspirational for many of our girls interested in a sporting career. A great article to share with our daughters. Trailblazing teachers inspire in the classroom and on the footy field As the AFL Women's competition players ran out onto the oval, they not only had the chance to make history, but also to inspire their students, especially girls, to be active. The competition's eight teams include 14 Victorian government school teachers who are balancing teaching with careers in football, and inspiring girls to follow in their boot prints. Moonee Ponds West Primary School teacher Bree White, who plays for Collingwood, said it was an exciting time for women in sport, and for the girls who look up to them. 'It's going to make a big difference for these girls to know that they've got these role models to look up to and that they can play these sports which, ten years ago, were male dominated,' Bree said. 'I think sport plays such an important role in our community, in promoting both an active lifestyle while being part of a team. 'Being a PE teacher, I just want kids to grow up loving sport so they do have something healthy and active later in life.' The focus on footy is a great step towards the Education State target of increasing the number of students undertaking physical activity each week. Minister for Education James Merlino visited Rowville Secondary College on Friday 24 February to meet some of the Collingwood Magpies and Western Bulldogs players ahead of last weekend's match. Rowville Secondary College teachers Lisa Williams and Lou Wotton, who play for the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood respectively, said the competition gave students the opportunity to see female role models in sport and encourage them to be active. 'It gives females a pathway now from Auskick right through to a national level. They can aspire to be an elite athlete and elite footballers,' Lou said. Moonee Ponds West Primary School student Sophia agreed, with teacher Bree White's involvement with the AFL Women's competition spurring on her love of footy. 'Football is fun and I get to tackle people. Even if you're not the best at like, kicking, you can still practice and when you get it you feel fantastic,' Sophia said. 'It's just awesome that we have a female teacher who is professionally playing football in one of the first teams for women. People even ask for autographs around the school.' A great presentation by 1/2A at assembly this week, who reminded all of us of the importance of team work skills and setting individual academic and personal goals.
