WORKING AT THE

INTERSECTION OF EDUCATION POLICY AND POLITICS OUR PURPOSE

he Hunt Institute is a recognized leader in the movement to transform American public education. We work at the intersection of education policy and politics where we empower state leaders to drive sustainable reform and become audacious Tchampions for public education.

Marshaling expertise from a nationwide partner network, we connect leaders with the best strategies to develop and implement policies and programs that improve public education. We are unapologetic about the importance of equity—in educational access, quality, and opportunity—and it is at the core of the work we do.

Established in 2001, The Hunt Institute honors the legacy of James B. Hunt, Jr., who served a historic four terms as North Carolina’s chief executive and whose lifelong commitment to public education earned him the distinction of the nation’s first “education governor.” The Institute was launched to leverage his experience and to engage other and policymakers to improve public education in their states. It is a mandate we remain committed to today.

The Institute is a 501(c)(3) independent, nonpartisan nonprofit, and in July 2016, we became an affiliate of the Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy to pursue joint research, programming opportunities, and events related to improving education policy.

“Education can’t be just another thing we do. It’s the most important thing we do. We need a more focused and comprehensive strategy. We need to be very specific about where we are trying to go. We need to realize it’s not enough to do just a ‘little more.’ We need a plan to get there, a road map to guide us.”
