Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants - Online edition Phaius australis F.Muell. Family: Orchidaceae Mueller, F.J.H. von (1858) Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae 1(2): 42. Type: In Australia orientali subtropica. Common name: Swamp Orchid Stem Flowers and fruits as a plant about 1-2 m tall. Stem or pseudobulb about 3-7 cm diam., +/- at ground level. Leaves Leaf blades rather large, about 30-120 cm long, longitudinally folded, bases sheathing the stem. Flowers Flower. © Stanley Breeden Perianth lobes often pink to brown to red on the inner surface but almost white on the outer surface. Calyx lobed +/- uniform in size and dimensions about 60 x 12 mm. Petals about 45 x 11 mm. Labellum pinkish-purple, about 50 x 45 mm. Anthers one, filaments and style fused to form one structure, a column about 20 x 7 x 5 mm. Ovary longitudinally grooved. Stigma elongate. Fruit Capsule about 8-11 cm long, splitting lengthwise into six segments but remaining fused at the base and apex. Seeds minute, about 1.2 mm long, +/- 2-winged, testa reticulate, white cream or translucent. Embryo minute. Scale bar 10mm. © CSIRO Seedlings Features not available. Distribution and Ecology Occurs in CYP, NEQ and southwards to coastal central Queensland and north-eastern New South Wales. Altitudinal range in CYP and NEQ from near sea level to 700 m. Usually grows in or on the edges of swamps in open forest but is sometimes associated with rain forest. Also occurs in Asia, Malesia and the western Pacific islands. Natural History & Notes Commonly cultivated, this terrestrial orchid does well potted or in a moist position in the garden. -

The fifth chapter of the series about Rudolf Schlechter’s South-American orchids introduces us to those botanists and orchid collectors who travelled and worked in Ecuador and Peru and supplied Schlechter with many of the new orchid species he described. As in previous chapters, the biographies and accomplishments of these travellers are preceded by brief geographical and historical outlines for each of these countries. It is worth mentioning that the lives and orchids of such prominent figures in the orchidology of South America as F.C. Lehmann, W. Hennis, E. Bungeroth and E. Ule, who collected in Ecuador and Peru, have already been mentioned in previous chapters and are therefore omitted here. Illumina sequencing followed by de novo assembly was used in this study, and the plastid genetic information of Calanthe s.l. was used to investigate the adaptive evolution of this taxon. Herein, the complete plastome of five Calanthe s.l. species (Calanthe davidii, Styloglossum lyroglossa, Preptanthe rubens, Cephalantheropsis obcordata, and Phaius tankervilliae) were determined, and the two other published plastome sequences of Calanthe s.l. were added for comparative analyses to examine the evolutionary pattern of the plastome in the alliance. The seven plastomes ranged from 150,181 bp (C. delavayi) to 159,014 bp (C. davidii) in length and were all mapped as circular structures. Except for the three ndh genes (ndhC, ndhF, and ndhK ) lost in C. delavayi, the remaining six species contain identical gene orders and numbers (115 gene). Nucleotide diversity was detected across the plastomes, and we screened 14 mutational hotspot regions, including 12 non-coding regions and two gene regions. Two new species of Crocodeilanthe, C. dewildei and C. steinbachii, three new species of Masdevallia, M. calochrysos, M. driesseniana and M. rostriflora, and one new species of Pleurothallis, P. amentacea, are described and illustrated. Keywords: Crocodeilanthe, Masdevallia, Pleurothallis, Stelis Two species of Crocodeilanthe Rchb. f. & Warsz., This large species is characterized by a thick rhizome, three species of Masdevallia Ruiz & Pav., one species long ramicauls, and one or two many-flowered racemes of Pleurothallis R. Br. and one species of Stelis Sw. are shorter than an elliptical leaf; small, fleshy, obtuse sepals; described as new. oblong, membranous, single-veined petals; and a fleshy lip As discussed elsewhere (Toscano de Brito, 2018), the with erect, broadly rounded margins overlaid with similarly genus Crocodeilanthe is related to Stelis Sw. Vegetatively, shaped calli nearly to the tip. Leaf erect, coriaceous, are developed into a recognizable dorsal sepal, which is free elliptical, subacute, 14–16 cm long including a petiole 1–1.5 of variably connate to the lateral sepals that are also more mm long, the blade 3 cm wide in the dry state, cuneate below or less connate and antrorse. -

Zusammenfassung Die antillanische Flora ist eine der artenreichsten der Erde. Trotz jahrhundertelanger floristischer Forschung zeigen jüngere Studien, daß der Archipel noch immer weiße Flecken beherbergt. Das trifft besonders auf die Familie der Orchideen zu, deren letzte Bearbeitung für Cuba z.B. mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert zurückliegt. Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf der lang ausstehenden Revision der Orchideengattung Pleurothallis R. Br. für die Flora de Cuba. Mittels weiterer morphologischer, palynologischer, molekulargenetischer, phytogeographischer und ökologischer Untersuchungen auch eines Florenteils der anderen Großen Antillen wird die Genese der antillanischen Pleurothallis-Flora rekonstruiert. Der Archipel umfaßt mehr als 70 Arten dieser Gattung, wobei die Zahlen auf den einzelnen Inseln sehr verschieden sind: Cuba besitzt 39, Jamaica 23, Hispaniola 40 und Puerto Rico 11 Spezies. Das Zentrum der Diversität liegt im montanen Dreieck Ost-Cuba – Jamaica – Hispaniola, einer Region, die 95 % der antillanischen Arten beherbergt, wovon 75% endemisch auf einer der Inseln sind. -

The spontaneous medicinal flora of Zlatar Mountain was studied in the aim of realizing the possibilities of its sustainable use for the needs of the pharmaceutical industry. The special attention was paid to genera Orchis, Ophrys, Plathanthera, Gimnadenia, etc. from the orchid family (Orchidaceae) of which salep is made (Tuber salep). Salep is a typical mucous drug (contains over 50% of mucus), which is very beneficial and useful. The primary role of salep is to heal and strengthen the organism and urge the sexual and every other biological ability. Orchids of which salep is made (Orchis coriophora, Orchis laxiflora, Orchis morio, Orchis mascula, Orchis pallens, Orchis purpurea, Orchis simia, Orchis tridentata and Orchis ustulata) are to be found on numerous habitats of Zlatar (in the bright forests, clearing areas and on forest meadows). -

Mr. Auguste R. Endrés: Not A Journey into the life and work of the greatest orchidologist to ever visit Costa Rica FRANCO PUPULIN, CARLOS OSSENBACH AND RUDOLPH JENNY “WE GREATLY REGRET TO HEAR OF THE DEATH OF THE EXCELLENT BOTANICAL COLLECTOR, M. ENDRES. WE ARE PROMISED AN ACCOUNT OF HIS CAREER FROM PROF. Reichenbach.” (ANONYMOUS, 1875). With these scanty words, and the promise of a note on his orchidologic journey — that will never be written — botany took leave of A.R. Endrés in May 1875. His name, variously spelled as Endres, Enderes and Enders, had appeared sporadically in the Gardener’s Chronicle since 1871, associated with orchid novelties, mostly just botanical curiosities, surfacing from Costa Rica. The brief obituary of the Gardener’s Chronicle’s publisher placed a tombstone on the short and obscure career of just another plant collector who had died doing his job. Time can be unfair. It may seem strange to begin our story on Endrés from the end, but — as we will see — during some 150 years it proved to be quite difficult to unravel the story of his life from the beginning, even to find a date and a place to begin the tale of a prodigious man who had a surname, but not a known forename to start with. His end itself has long been a mystery, nothing more than a myth passed from mouth to mouth, according to which Endrés was murdered in Colombia. “Riohacha — a man lies face down near an unplucked orchid” (Kaufman and Kaufman 1999). Dutch Caribbean Species of High Conservation Value 4 CITES listed species 4.1 Notes on CITES Species CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. In the CITES legislation organisms are classified in 3 categories depending on how endangered they are thought to be, or the degree of protection they are thought to need (CITES-Website 2012); ! Appendix I includes species threatened with extinction. Trade in specimens of these species is permitted only in exceptional circumstances. Import and export or re-export permits are required, issued by the Management Authority of the State of Import, Export or Re-Export. ! Appendix II includes species where trade is allowed but restricted. An export or re-export certificate is required, but no import permit is needed unless required by national law. ! Appendix III are species in which trade is allowed but monitored.
