7/8/2014 Purity Vodka Banks on Some Comic Timing - NYTimes.com http://nyti.ms/1mwRWmj BUSINESS DAY Purity Vodka Banks on Some Comic Timing JULY 8, 2014 Advertising By STUART ELLIOTT A SMALL brand of Swedish vodka seeking to become better known is turning to an American comedian with a big following for an online video series that will use humor to get noticed and shared. The vodka is Purity and the comedian is Joel McHale, familiar from his work on “The Soup” on the E! cable channel as well as the comedy series “Community,” which the Yahoo Screen streaming-video service agreed last week to pick up for at least one more round of 13 episodes after NBC canceled the show. The fact that Mr. McHale’s videos for Purity will be online, on the brand’s YouTube channel, as “Community” moves to streaming video from television is a coincidence. He does, however, have extensive experience in online video, as evidenced by the clips he creates for “The Soup” that can be watched on their own YouTube channel. His most recent clip, uploaded last week, offers a wicked spoof of the Jerry Seinfeld web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”; in Mr. McHale’s version, the stimulative substance sought by the comedians offers a kick more powerful — and illegal — than the buzz from caffeine. The videos for Purity featuring Mr. McHale — there are to be three initially, under the umbrella title of “Crafted Spirits,” with a possibility of http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/09/business/purity-vodka-banks-on-some-comic-timing.html?ref=business&_r=0 1/3 7/8/2014 Purity Vodka Banks on Some Comic Timing - NYTimes.com more next year — also serve as a showcase for his sardonic style of humor.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joel McHale Brings The Laughs To The Hanover Theatre May 19 Worcester, Mass. McHale recently wrapped his twelfth and final season of E!’s “The Soup,” in which he satirized pop culture and current events. Although currently starring in CBS’s “The Great Indoors”, he may be best known for his starring role on the hit comedy series “Community,” which wrapped its sixth season on Yahoo after five seasons on NBC. McHale was also recently seen on Fox’s revival of “The X-Files” where he played a conservative news anchor. He also continues to perform his stand-up act around the country to sold-out audiences and Entertainment Weekly calls his 2016 book, “Thanks for the Money,” a “clever, much-needed antidote to the age of celebrity book deals”. Previously, McHale starred as Robin Williams’ son in “A Merry Friggin’ Christmas” and was seen in the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced supernatural thriller, “Deliver Us From Evil.” He also appeared in the Warner Bros. romantic comedy “Blended” alongside Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. BY CAITLIN GIBSON For touring artists opposed to North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” a complicated question looms: To boycott or not to boycott? Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, Ani DiFranco and author Sherman Alexie are among those who have opted to cancel their appearances as a show of opposi- tion to a new law that requires transgender people to use public bathrooms that match the gen- der they were assigned at birth. Others, including Cyndi Lau- per, Duran Duran and comedian Joel McHale, have decided to forge ahead with their Tar Heel State events and use their time in the spotlight to support local LGBT advocacy groups and speak out against the law. So which is the right call? What has the greater impact — an artist’s presence or absence? In Springsteen’s case, he de- cided that scrapping the concert would make the biggest waves: “It is the strongest means I have for raising my voice in opposition to those who continue to push us backwards instead of forwards,” he wrote in a statement an- nouncing his cancellation.
