This paper extends the Gotay-Nester and the Dirac theories of constrained systems in order to deal with Dirac dynamical systems in the integrable case. Integrable Dirac dynamical systems are viewed as constrained systems where the constraint submanifolds are foliated. The cases considered usually in the literature correspond to a trivial foliation, with only one leaf. A Constraint Algorithm for Dirac dynamical systems (CAD), which extends the Gotay-Nester algorithm, is developed. Evolution equations are written using a Dirac bracket adapted to the foliations and an adapted total energy. The interesting example of LC circuits is developed in detail. The paper emphasizes the point of view that Dirac and Gotay-Nester theories are, in a certain sense, dual and that using a combination of results from both theories may have advantages in dealing with a given example, rather than using systematically one or the other. Introduction. The main purpose of this paper is to study an extension of the Dirac theory of constraints [54, 55, 56] and the Gotay-Nester theory [63, 58] for the case in which the equation of motion is a Dirac dynamical system on a manifold M, (x; x_) ⊕ dE(x) 2 Dx; (1) where D ⊆ TM ⊕ T ∗M is a given integrable Dirac structure on M, which gives a foliation of M by presymplectic leaves, and E is a given function on M, called the energy. The seminal article [39] by Courant and Weinstein contains the definition of a Dirac structure and addresses the Dirac theory of constraints as one of the motivations for introducing this notion. Another extension of the Dirac theory of constraints, inspired in the notion of Dirac structures, is given in the notes [16] by Bursztyn. Succinctly, for this extension one considers a Poisson manifold and a given primary constraint submanifold, rather than a symplectic manifold and a primary constraint submanifold as in the Dirac theory. This differs from the problem addressed in the present paper, since we start with a foliated submanifold of a symplectic manifold. See for example [8] as an introduction to the extensive literature on Poisson manifolds and algebras. For our purposes, we will first review only those aspects of the Gotay-Nester and the Dirac works which are relevant for our work and later on we will describe our extension. We will give detailed proofs under precise regularity conditions, at the cost of making the paper a little longer, but self contained. One of the features of systems like (1) is that they can represent some constrained systems where the constraints appear even if the Lagrangian is nonsingular, as it happens in the case of integrable nonholonomic systems. We will work under explicit hypotheses about regularity, locality and integrability, although some of our results can be applied in more general cases, as indicated in the paragraph Hypotheses, below in this section. In the Gotay-Nester theory the starting point is an equation of the form !(x)(x; _ ) = dE(x) (2) where ! is a presymplectic form on M. In fact, in the Gotay-Nester theory the more general case where dE(x) is replaced by an arbitrary closed 1-form α is considered, but this will not be relevant here. Example. Conditions for equations of this type to be second order have been studied in [59]. The case E(q; v; p) = H(q; p), where H is a given Hamiltonian on T ∗Q gives Hamilton's equations. In section6 we will give more examples showing the unifying power of Dirac systems. The idea of using the Pontryagin bundle to write such fundamental equations of physics appears in [29, 78, 97, 98, 99, 110, 111]. Equation (2) is equivalent to equation (1) in the case in which the Dirac structure on M is the one naturally associated to !, denoted D!, in which case the foliation of M has obviously only one presymplectic leaf. In general, equation (1) may be considered as a collection of equations of the type (2), one for each presymplectic leaf of the Dirac structure. However, in order to study the initial condition problem this approach might not be appropriate, because different initial conditions might belong to different presymplectic leaves and therefore correspond to different equations of the type (2), which is not the usual situation. Similarly, if D = Dπ is the Dirac structure associated to a Poisson bivector π the presymplectic leaves of Dπ are the symplectic leaves of π and equation (1) is equivalent to f_ = ff; Eg. The algorithm of the Gotay-Nester theory generates a finite sequence of secondary constraint submanifolds M ⊇ M1 ⊇ · · · ⊇ Mc. The final constraint submanifold Mc has the property that every solution curve of (2) is contained in it. In fact, Mc can be defined as being the smallest submanifold having that property, a non constructive definition but not involving any algorithm. Equations of motion are given by restricting the variable (x; x_) in equation (2) to TMc, and existence of solution curves x(t) for a given initial condition x0 2 Mc is guaranteed, under the condition that the kernel of [ ! An important point in the Gotay-Nester approach is that the equations defining the secondary constraint submanifolds are written in terms of ! (see formula (12)), which makes the whole algorithm invariant under a group of transformations preserving !. In order to solve (1), we will develop a constraint algorithm that we call CAD (constraint algorithm for Dirac dynamical systems). The CAD extends the Gotay- Nester algorithm and gives a sequence of secondary foliated constraint submanifolds. The secondary foliated constraint submanifolds can be written in terms of the Dirac structure using formula (45), which generalizes (12). Let M ⊆ N be an embedding of M into a symplectic manifold (N; Ω), in such a way that the presymplectic leaves of M are presymplectic submanifolds of N and let, by slight abuse of notation, E : N ! R denote an arbitrary extension of the given energy on M. This kind of framework can be naturally constructed in many examples. Then one can consider, at least locally, that M is a primary foliated constraint submanifold defined by equating certain constraints to 0, and each leaf is defined by equating some other constraints to a constant depending on the leaf, which generalizes the situation of the Dirac theory of constraints. One of the results of this paper establishes that there exists a Dirac bracket whose symplectic leaves are adapted to the foliations of the primary and final foliated constraint submanifolds.

The importance of this study was increased by the fact that they arise naturally in Molino’s classification of Riemannian foliations (cf. [Mol82]). To each Lie foliation are associated two Lie algebras, the Lie algebra G of the Lie group on which the foliation is modeled and the structural Lie algebra H. The latter algebra is the Lie algebra of the Lie foliation F restricted to the clousure of any one of its leaves. In particular, it is a subalgebra of G. We remark that although H is canonically associated to F, G is not. Thus two interesting problems are naturally posed: the realization problem and the change problem. The realization problem is to know which pairs of Lie algebras (G, H), with H subalgebra of G, can arise as transverse and structural Lie algebras, respectively, of a Lie foliation F on a compact manifold M.

However, somewhere in the writing I succumbed to the temptation to continue on to interesting, related topics. The end product is essentially a general survey of new results in the field with, of course, the customary bias for areas of personal interest to the author. Since such articles are not written for the specialist, I have spent some time in introducing and motivating the subject.

Theoretical Physics, Waterloo, ON N2L 2Y5, Canada Abstract In her recent work, Dittrich generalized Rovelli’s idea of partial observables to construct Dirac observables for constrained systems to the general case of an arbitrary first class constraint algebra with structure functions rather than structure constants. Here we use this framework and propose how to implement explicitly a reduced phase space quantization of a given system, at least in principle, without the need to compute the gauge equivalence classes. The degree of practicality of this programme depends on the choice of the partial observables involved. The (multi-fingered) time evolution was shown to correspond to an automorphism on the set of Dirac observables so generated and interesting representations of the latter will be those for which a suitable preferred subgroup is realized unitarily.     COMMENTARY ON FOLIATIONS* Quoting Thurston's definition of foliation [F11]. \Given a large supply of some sort of fabric, what kinds of manifolds can be made from it, in a way that the patterns match up along the seams? This is a very general question, which has been studied by diverse means in differential topology and differential geometry. ... A foliation is a manifold made out of striped fabric - with infintely thin stripes, having no space between them. The complete stripes, or leaves, of the foliation are submanifolds; if the leaves have codimension k, the foliation is called a codimension k foliation. In order that a manifold admit a codimension- k foliation, it must have a plane field of dimension (n − k)." Such a foliation is called an (n − k)-dimensional foliation. The first definitive result in the subject, the so called Frobenius integrability theorem [Fr], concerns a necessary and sufficient condition for a plane field to be the tangent field of a foliation. See [Spi] Chapter 6 for a modern treatment. As Frobenius himself notes [Sa], a first proof was given by Deahna [De]. While this work was published in 1840, it took another hundred years before a geometric/topological theory of foliations was introduced. This was pioneered by Ehresmann and Reeb in a series of Comptes Rendus papers starting with [ER] that was quickly followed by Reeb's foundational 1948 thesis [Re1]. See Haefliger [Ha4] for a detailed account of developments in this period. Reeb [Re1] himself notes that the 1-dimensional theory had already undergone considerable development through the work of Poincare [P], Bendixson [Be], Kaplan [Ka] and others.

These actions, which are called sym- plectic, have been studied in the past forty years, following the works of Atiyah, Delzant, Duistermaat, Guillemin, Heckman, Kostant, Souriau, and Sternberg in the 1970s and 1980s on symplectic actions of compact Abelian Lie groups that are, in addition, of Hamiltonian type, i.e., they also satisfy Hamilton’s equations. Since then a number of connections with combinatorics, finite- dimensional integrable Hamiltonian systems, more general symplectic actions, and topology have flourished. In this paper we review classical and recent re- sults on Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian symplectic group actions roughly starting from the results of these authors. This paper also serves as a quick introduction to the basics of symplectic geometry. 1. Introduction Symplectic geometry is concerned with the study of a notion of signed area, rather than length, distance, or volume. It can be, as we will see, less intuitive than Euclidean or metric geometry and it is taking mathematicians many years to understand its intricacies (which is work in progress). The word “symplectic” goes back to the 1946 book [164] by Hermann Weyl (1885–1955) on classical groups.

In particular we find “weak” Haag–Kastler axioms which will ensure that the final constrained theory satisfies the usual Haag–Kastler axioms. Gupta– Bleuler electromagnetism is developed in detail as an example of a theory which satisfies the “weak” Haag–Kastler axioms but not the usual ones. This analysis is done by pure C*– algebraic means without employing any indefinite metric representations, and we obtain the same physical algebra and positive energy representation for it than by the usual means. The price for avoiding the indefinite metric, is the use of nonregular representations and complex valued test functions. We also exhibit the precise connection with the usual indefinite metric representation. We conclude the analysis by comparing the final physical algebra produced by a system of local constrainings with the one obtained from a single global constraining and also consider the issue of reduction by stages. We provide analogues for non-orientable surfaces with or without boundary or punctures of several basic theorems in the setting of the Thurston theory of surfaces which were developed so far only in the case of orientable surfaces. Namely, we pro- vide natural analogues for non-orientable surfaces of the Fenchel- Nielsen theorem on the parametrization of the Teichm¨uller space of the surface, the Dehn-Thurston theorem on the parametrization of measured foliations in the surface, and the Hatcher-Thurston theorem, which gives a complete minimal set of moves between pair of pants decompositions of the surface.

Our proposal uses as its only inputs a Lagrangian density and the identification of the a priori independent field variables it depends on. This coordinate-dependent, purely Lagrangian approach is complementary to and in perfect agreement with the related vast literature. Besides, generally overlooked technical challenges and problems derived from an incomplete analysis are addressed in detail. The theoretical framework is minutely illustrated in the Maxwell, Proca and Palatini theories for all finite d ≥ 2 spacetime dimensions. Our novel analysis of Palatini gravity constitutes a noteworthy set of results on its own. In particular, its computational simplicity is visible, as compared to previous Hamiltonian studies. We argue for the potential value of both the method and the given examples in the context of generalized Proca and their coupling to gravity.
