SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY FACULTY MEMBERS and students effectively represented their School as well as Indiana University in general on August 17 at the 1979 Indiana State Fair. Four one-hour audience participation programs were presented by the faculty members and students. This dental health program, 0 9 entitled Dr. Dental IO Q. , v; was designed and directed by the School s Office of Faculty Development in cooperation with Mro Ken Beckley, Director of University Relationso Dr. Rolando Ao Decastro and Mr. Mark Dirlam from the Departments of Oral Anatomy and Dental Art prepared and erected an attractive sign spotlighting the School of Dentistry's program on IoU, Day in the Education Building.

The following persons representing the School of Dentistry student body participated as interviewers during the program: Mark Bohnert ~ Deann Harris, Phil Heller, Beth Hollon~ Komarnyckyj, Roger Murphy, Sally Phillips, Debbie Roberson, Bill Shideler, Tom Stokes, Greg Winteregg. These ener getic interviewers passed out handbills in front of the Education Building before each perfonnance. The handbills announced the 1iDoctor Dental I.Q. n program with the slogan "Ask a question - get a free and an answer." (The approach worked well: more than 450 were handed out during the four performances.) The roving interviewers also encouraged the fairgoers in the theater of the Education Building to ask questions· about dental health, the dental school!)· and the dental profession. In rotation, four in~erviewers at each program would announce over their microphones a phrase reminiscent of the old ' 1Doctor I .Qo n radio program, 0 something like this: Doctor, I have a woman in the second row. H The person in the audience would then direct his question to the moderator of the panel.

During the four performances Dr. Charles W. Gish and Dr. David K. Hennon alternated as moderators, referring questions to the following School of Dentistry faculty members on the panel:- Mr . Gale E. Coons, Dr. -~yron J. Kasle, Dr. Francis E. McCormick ~ Dro Victor H. Mercer, Dr. Jerry G. Nieten, Miss Evelyn R. oidsen, Dr. John Risch, Dr. Charles E. Smith. Dr. Gish and Dro Hennon also served on the panel when they were not functioning as moderatorso

The questions asked by the four audiences were very substantial, and the School of Dentistry representatives took full advantage of this opportunity to provide dental health education to the fairgoerso It was amazing to

IUSD f"1f'IM T'\u1l\ll"Tl O / 7 0 -6- observe that the adults as well as the children sustained their interest in asking questions throughout each of the one-hour programs.

Examples of the wide range of questions asked by the audiences follow:

I want to tell you how grateful I am for the expert .. attention given to me. From the first '.> which started· · ~ 11 in 1970 11 I h?,ve been made to feel ';special with each student. Because of a decayed tooth in my work? it had to be done all over. So early this year, a careful diagnosis was given, and then the work began. From the student who worked cleaning my teeth-each inspector-the student who worked so hard? so carefully; explaining each step to me-to the COll\Vletion of a bridge~-partial plate-and upper denture, I received such kind considerationo I marveled at the fact l as I observed the other students working on their patients? how courteous and thoughtful they all were.
