Priyanka Chatterjee* and Ambarish Mukherjee. Department of Botany (CAS Phase II), Burdwan University, Burdwan-713104. West Bengal, India. ABSTRACT Considering taxonomic study to be the most essential prerequisite for documenting medicinal plants in used by the ethnic communities of Hooghly district, West Bengal, the present authors could record 147 species belonging to 134 genera of 64 families of the Magnoliophyta (angiosperms) of which 133 species are Magnoliopsids (dicotyledonous) and 14 Liliopsids (monocotyledonous). At specific, generic, and family levels, dicots scored higher percentages of representation over monocots. Habit analysis of the ethnomedicinally used plants, thus recorded, shows the ratio of Herb: Shrub: Tree: Climber to be 66:32:31:18 which speaks of a wide range plant-forms in use. Values of generic and specific quota of each of the concerned families were found to be 2.09 and 2.49 respectively. Value of Jacard Generic Coefficient was determined to be 91.15 which reflect a taxonomic potential inadequate to render stability to the overall community. Since the value is close to 1, the per-genus species quota is expected to get augmented in future, thus diminisishing the value, if the sustainability of their habitats is optimized. Three southern districts of West Bengal, India with different Agro-climatic conditions, viz. Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur, and Murshidabad were selected for that purpose. Information was collected on the use of plant parts to treat problems like infertility, dysmenorrhoea, leucorrhoea, profuse menstrual bleeding and irregular menstrual period and also as agent for termination of pregnancy. With the help of available literatures, the previously reported use of these medicinal plants are analyzed in the perspective of identifying any possible impact on problems considered as female diseases. Renner3 BIOGEOGRAPHY OF LAURACEAE: EVIDENCE FROM THE CHLOROPLAST AND NUCLEAR GENOMES1 ABSTRACT Phylogenetic relationships among 122 species of Lauraceae representing 44 of the 55 currentlyrecognized genera are inferredfrom sequence variation in the chloroplast and nuclear genomes. The trnL-trnF,trnT-trnL, psbA-trnH, and rpll6 regions of cpDNA, and the 5' end of 26S rDNA resolved major lineages, while the ITS/5.8S region of rDNA resolved a large terminal lade. The phylogenetic estimate is used to assess morphology-based views of relationships and, with a temporal dimension added, to reconstructthe biogeographic historyof the family.Results suggest Lauraceae radiated when trans-Tethyeanmigration was relatively easy, and basal lineages are established on either Gondwanan or Laurasian terrains by the Late Cretaceous. Most genera with Gondwanan histories place in Cryptocaryeae, but a small group of South American genera, the Chlorocardium-Mezilauruls lade, represent a separate Gondwanan lineage. Caryodaphnopsis and Neocinnamomum may be the only extant representatives of the ancient Lauraceae flora docu- mented in Mid- to Late Cretaceous Laurasian strata. Remaining genera place in a terminal Perseeae-Laureae lade that radiated in Early Eocene Laurasia. Therein, non-cupulate genera associate as the Persea group, and cupuliferous genera sort to Laureae of most classifications or Cinnamomeae sensu Kostermans. Laureae are Laurasian relicts in Asia. ISSN: 0975-8585 Research Journal of Pharmaceutical, Biological and Chemical Sciences Inhibition of Ehrlich’s Ascites Carcinoma by the Leaf Extracts of Eupatorium ayapana in Swiss Albino Mice. Madhubanti Bepari, Pralay Maity, and Sujata Maiti Choudhury* Department of Human Physiology with Community Health, Vidyasagar University, Midnapore-721102, West Bengal, India. ABSTRACT Eupatorium ayapana, belonging to the family Asteraceae, is therapeutically used as an antiseptic, antidysenteric, antibacterial and haematostatic agent. The objective of the present study is to explore the antitumour activity of the ethanolic and water extracts of the Eupatorium ayapana in Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) bearing Swiss albino mice. To evaluate the antitumour activity, ethanolic and water extracts of E. ayapana were administered at the dose level of 150 mg/kg body weight intraperitonally for 14 consecutive days using 5-flurouracil as standard drug. After 24 h of the last dose, the antitumor effect of ethanolic and water extracts was assessed by evaluating tumor volume, viable cell count, increase in body weight, mean survival time and hematological parameters of the EAC bearing host. Both extracts caused significant decrease in tumor volume, viable tumor cell count, body weight and elevated the life span of EAC tumor bearing mice. Haematological profiles such as red blood cell (RBC), haemoglobin, and white blood cell (WBC) count restored more or less to normal level in extract-treated mice. The results demonstrated that the both extracts at 150 mg/kg body weight have potent antitumour activity and ethanolic extract is comparatively more potent than the water extract. The enormous amount of information already generated on this subject provides a rich field for data-miners as it is conceivable, with suitable computational techniques, to predict the antioxidant capacity of any essential oil just by knowing its particular chemical composition. To accomplish this task we here report on the design, training and validation of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) able to predict the antioxidant activity of EOs of known chemical composition.Methods A multilayer ANN with 30 input neurons, 42 in hidden layers (20 --> 15 --> 7) and one neuron in the output layer was developed and run using Fast Artificial Neural Network software. The chemical composition of 32 EOs and their antioxidant activity in the DPPH and linoleic acid models were extracted from the scientific literature and used as input values. From the initial set of around 80 compounds present in these EOs, only 30 compounds with relevant antioxidant capacity were selected to avoid excessive complexity of the neural network and minimise the associated structural problems.Results and discussion The ANN could predict the antioxidant capacities of essential oils of known chemical composition in both the DPPH and linoleic acid assays with an average error of only 3.16% and 1.46%, respectively. -
