Actor-Director Vincent Sherman, Who Played Harry Becker
"Wyler knew how to get to the truth of each actor's capacity," actor-director Vincent Sherman, who played Harry Becker in William Wyler's "Counsellor at Law," told the Goldwyn Theater audience after a screening of the ftlm in July. "Counsellor at Law," Wyler's 1933 examination of the business and personal issues confronting a high-powered New York attorney, was screened as part of the Academy's centennial salute to the Oscar winning director. "Wyler wasn't always articulate about the details of the scene, TERENCE STAMP but he knew when it was right," Sherman said. "He knew how to squeeze every ounce of emotion that was in a scene and to get the best out of everybody." Sherman was joined on the panel by actor Terence Stamp, who starred in "The Collector," for WYLER'S BEN-HUR, CHARLTON HESTON , IS which Wyler earned the last of his directing nominations; actress Carroll Baker, who was directed INTRODUCED FROM THE AUDIENCE. by Wyler in "The Big Country;" and writer Fay Kanin, who with husband Michael was a colleague of Wyler. The panel was moderated by film critic Peter Rainer. Wyler earned a record twelve Academy Award nominations for directing, and during his career won Oscar statuettes for "Mrs. Miniver," "The Best Years of Our Lives" and "Ben-Hur." He earned nominations in the Best Picture category for "Roman Holiday" and "Friendly Persuasion," which also were among his directing nominations. He received the Irving G.ThaibergAward in 1965. When offered "The Big Country," Carroll Baker said, she was "a little bit self-conscious" because after "Baby Doll" she was being offered only "little sexpots." She mentioned her concern to Wyler.

The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection A Handlist A wide-ranging collection of c. 4000 individual popular songs, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s and including songs from films and musicals. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection is a closed access collection. Please ask at the enquiry desk if you would like to use it. Announces: NIAGARA Composed by SOL KAPLAN RIVER OF NO RETURN Composed by LIONEL NEWMAN, LEIGH HARLINE, and CYRIL MOCKRIDGE Intrada Special Collection Volume ISC 157 Intrada's latest double-header from the 20th Century Fox catalog features two films starring Marilyn Monroe. The first, Niagara (1953), is a tight, nasty film noir, crisply directed by veteran Henry Hathaway and starring Monroe, Joseph Cotten as her tortured husband, and Jean Peters as an innocent young woman whose kindness entangles her with Monroe’s nefarious plans to get rid of her spouse. Composing duties fell to composer Sol Kaplan, whose music for Niagara features an aural landscape of fretfully circling strings, blaring brass, and rumbling percussion. There is unsettling thriller music aplenty here and even the occasional moment of overheated humor. The second score featured is to the 1954 film River of No Return, telling the tale of a rancher with a past (Robert Mitchum), his young son, and a dance hall girl (Monroe) who yearns for a better life – all thrown together by chance and forced to brave Indians, mountain lions, a host of scurvy Western no-accounts, and the vagaries of a wild and woolly river. Their efforts are supported by a delightfully varied and colorful score, delivered by no less than four composers. Lionel Newman wrote the main title song, “River Of No Return,” with lyrics by Fox mainstay Ken Darby, here sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford. This tune—along with another Newman/Darby composition, “Down in the Meadow”—gets considerable instrumental play in the score; both featuring charming pieces of gentle Americana.

Film Score Blogs by Bill Wrobel Monday, October 4, 2004 at 8:04 pm [Blog # 5] I went to the chiropractic this morning at 8 am. He said I am doing very well with my neck (I had a bike collision with a car door in late May!) after over a dozen sessions, and I won’t need to return until October 20 (my day off). My lawyer is handling the setup with the chiropractor while my medical plan pays for $26 for each session. Then I went to Office Depot to purchase some #19 thin rubber bands, Sharpwriter # 2 pencils, and a Scotch tape dispenser. Then I went up the street to Del Taco and bought a Veggie Works for myself and an egg & bacon quesadilla for my wife. She was awake when I returned home, appreciative of the mini-breakfast (she likes the taste of bacon!). Of film music research interest this morning, I also phoned Bob at Paramount Studios Music Library to see if I can finally get a chance to research Herrmann’s The Man Who Knew Too Much on Friday. I tried last year during a vacation week but he was too busy with studio work. This time he indicated that it may be possible! I’m to phone him early on Friday to see what the status is and to also arrange to get me on the lot (thru the Studio guard!). So I am keeping my fingers crossed! I’ve been trying for some years now (once a year or every two years), and now may be the right timing.

Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew.
