'~ '· APOLLO 14 STATUS REPORT Apollo 14 astronaut crew activities include physical examination at MSC, guidance and navigation system briefing, contingency (one-man) EVA simulation on January 5; lunar descent flight simulations with flight controller participation on January 6; lunar orbit and descent orbit insertion simulations with the flight controllers on January 7; EVA simulation with the flight controllers on January 8; and press interviews on January 9 at MSC Hypergolic propellants-- those which ignite spontaneously when the fuel and oxydizer meet-- will be loaded in the Apollo 14 spacecraft and in the auxiliary propulsion system of the Saturn third stage from January 4 to 8. Then RP-1 fuel will be loaded aboard the Saturn V first stage on January 9. Also during the week, spacecraft pyrotechnics will be installed, Saturn first stage engines will be leak-checked. and flight stowage of the modularized equipment stowage assembly in the lunar module descent stage will be accomplished. Preparations of the Apollo 14 space vehicle continue to proceed satisfactorily for a scheduled launching January 31 from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39. Fifteen potential Skylab astronauts are scheduled to visit Sacramento Peak Observatory, Sunspot. New Mexico for solar telescope training on January ' and 7. The second stage for the 13th Saturn V rocket departed the NASA Mississippi Test Facility December 30 aboard the barge Poseidon for the Kennedy Space Center. The stage is scheduled to arrive January 5 and go into temporary storage in the VAB The stage is planned for use in the Skylab program as part of the Saturn V rocket to place the orbital workshop into Earth orbit in late 1972. -

Supportability for Beyond Low Earth Orbit Missions William Cirillo1 and Kandyce Goodliff2 NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA, 23681 Gordon Aaseng3 NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA, 94035 Chel Stromgren4 Binera, Inc., Silver Springs, MD, 20910 and Andrew Maxwell5 Georgia Institute of Technology, Hampton, VA 23666 Exploration beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO) presents many unique challenges that will require changes from current Supportability approaches. Currently, the International Space Station (ISS) is supported and maintained through a series of preplanned resupply flights, on which spare parts, including some large, heavy Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs), are delivered to the ISS. The Space Shuttle system provided for a robust capability to return failed components to Earth for detailed examination and potential repair. Additionally, as components fail and spares are not already on-orbit, there is flexibility in the transportation system to deliver those required replacement parts to ISS on a near term basis. A similar concept of operation will not be feasible for beyond LEO exploration. The mass and volume constraints of the transportation system and long envisioned mission durations could make it difficult to manifest necessary spares. The supply of on-demand spare parts for missions beyond LEO will be very limited or even non-existent. In addition, the remote nature of the mission, the design of the spacecraft, and the limitations on crew capabilities will all make it more difficult to maintain the spacecraft. Alternate concepts of operation must be explored in which required spare parts, materials, and tools are made available to make repairs; the locations of the failures are accessible; and the information needed to conduct repairs is available to the crew. -

TABLE 1 GEOLOGIC FIELD-TRAINING OF NASA ASTRONAUTS BETWEEN JANUARY 1963 AND NOVEMBER 1972 The following is a year-by-year listing of the astronaut geologic field training trips planned and led by personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Branches of Astrogeology and Surface Planetary Exploration, in collaboration with the Geology Group at the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas at the request of NASA between January 1963 and November 1972. Regional geologic experts from the U.S. Geological Survey and other governmental organizations and universities s also played vital roles in these exercises. [The early training (between 1963 and 1967) involved a rather large contingent of astronauts from NASA groups 1, 2, and 3. Among the nine astronaut trainees in Flagstaff for that initial astronaut geologic training exercise was Neil Armstrong--who would become the first man to step foot on the Moon during the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969! The other astronauts present included Frank Borman (Apollo 8), Charles "Pete" Conrad (Apollo 12), James Lovell (Apollo 8 and the near-tragic Apollo 13), James McDivitt, Elliot See (killed later in a plane crash), Thomas Stafford (Apollo 10), Edward White (later killed in the tragic Apollo 1 fire at Cape Canaveral), and John Young (Apollo 16). -

0106C Christa McAuliffe 10/26/05 10:43 PM Page 40 Christa McAuliffe, Teacher Astronaut S ONE OF her training exercises in becoming the first teacher astronaut, A Christa McAuliffe had to curl up inside a 36-inch-diameter nylon ball. When she was zipped up, she found herself in total darkness. She didn’t know when she’d be let out. Christa wore electrodes and transmitters to see how she would react to being closed in, since on the space shuttle she’d have to share a living space that measured only 10 by 13 feet (the size of her kitchen) with six people, and she and the other astronauts would eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, work, and relax there; it was no place for someone with claustrophobia. Christa thought she would start yelling and try to claw her way out, but she lay back, folded her arms across her stomach, and imagined herself floating in space. As Christa McAuliffe a result, the 15 minutes she spent inside the nylon ball were very peaceful. At the end of the exercise, she asked if she could take the ball home. “When things start to get crazy, I can just set the timer and tell the kids, ‘O.K., Mom’s going into the sphere now.’” Christa, a high-school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, first heard about the teacher astronaut program on the radio while driving with her husband, Steve. The smile that lit Christa’s face told Steve she was interested. “Go for it,” he said. When she put off filling out the Women astronauts stand with the Personal Rescue Enclosure (the rescue ball). -

The Aerospace Update Dec. 28, 2017 Top 2017 Space Images Video Credit: NASA SpaceX Concludes 2017 With Fourth Iridium Next launch SpaceX closed out its most successful year to date Dec. 22nd with the launch of 10 satellites for mobile satellite services operator Iridium, notching a personal best of 18 launches in a single year. The Falcon 9 mission, which took off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 8:27 p.m. Eastern in an instantaneous launch window, was the fourth of eight missions for Iridium, carrying the McLean, Virginia- based operator’s second generation satellites, called Iridium Next. In what now is considered a rarity, SpaceX opted not to recover the rocket’s first stage, instead letting the booster fall into the Pacific Ocean. Video Credit: SpaceX Source: Caleb Henry @ SpaceNews.com Zenit Rocket Launches AngoSat-1 but Ground Control Loses Contact A Russian-Ukrainian Zenit rocket was launched on Tuesday, December 26th, with the aim of delivering into orbit Angola’s first satellite, known as AngoSat-1. However, it appears that contact with the spacecraft was lost after its deployment into orbit. The booster lifted off from Site 45/1 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Tuesday’s launch marked the first Zenit flight in more than two years when it orbited the Elektro-L № 2 weather satellite for Roscosmos. The rocket returned to flight despite fears that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which started in 2014, would kill any joint efforts between these two countries. Though more than a score of years after the loss of Challenger’s crew, STS-118 was a reminder of the morning of January 28, 1986. That week Christa McAuliffe planned to perform both live and filmed science lessons. These lost lessons, prepared for the nation and world’s school children, were never done. This project delves into those undone educational activities. Indeed, after studying its content, all will appreciate NASA’s, Christa’s and Barbara’s efforts as well as Bob Mayfield’s in carefully researching, preparing and training for the performance of the six “Challenger lost lessons.” Though lost in the sense that they perished with Challenger and her crew, recounting, redoing, and examining them is, in a sense, a resurrection.
