THE SONGS OF BLUE JONI MITCHELL SYNOPSIS “As exquisite a biography as you’re likely to hear.” AUSTRALIAN ARTS REVIEW Australian cabaret chanteuse and musical theatre star, Queenie van de Zandt, renowned for her artful storytelling and raw, emotive vocals, brings to you the songs, stories and art of the musical legend that is Joni Mitchell. Renaissance woman, painter and poet, Mitchell created a soundtrack for the Woodstock generation. “Joni is my favourite singer/songwriter and I’ve been wanting to do a show about her and her music for some time,” said Queenie. “She gave a daughter up for adoption early in her career and her music was so influenced by this experience. When I gave birth to my daughter, it felt like a perfect time to explore this mother and daughter relationship and the effect that becoming a parent has on your creativity.” In BLUE: The Songs of Joni Mitchell, Queenie, along with legendary musical director Max Lambert and a live band, explores her love of all things Joni. Using voice overs and intimate storytelling, Queenie takes us on a sonic journey through her life, loses and loves, affectionately reinterpreting Joni Mitchell’s melancholy music, and intimately revealing the stories behind some of her most haunting songs such as A Case of You, Both Sides Now and Little Green. Following rave reviews, and sell-out performances in 2017 at the Queensland and Melbourne Cabaret Festivals and the Hayes Theatre in Sydney, BLUE: The Songs of Joni Mitchell, has continued its success touring Australia and the US in 2018 with more dates set for 2019 and beyond.

It was a pleasure to host representatives from our fellow Innangard member firms from the UK, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Netherlands and France. PCS has been the Australian member firm for this wonderful alliance for several years and the conference we hosted showcased the truly global footprint that the firm has and is able to deliver to its clients. I know that our Innangard colleagues and clients alike appreciated the opportunity to understand more about each other as is one of the great benefits of these initiatives. We have dedicated this edition of Strategy-Eyes to the three conference sessions, all of which were entertaining and informative. Numerous attendees were overheard to say something to the effect of: “There’s a lot of similarities around the world in employment law but also just enough differences to make each country unique!” Outside of our global alliance, this year is going to be another bumper year for PCS, not least of which because we celebrate our 10th birthday on 1 July.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta acknowledges the Traditional Owners of this land, the Darug people. A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT What things can't we tell those we love and for what reasons? Is it because we want to protect their feelings or avoid the consequences of telling the truth? Why do we all leave certain chapters 'unpublished'? These are some of the questions I was pondering when I started writing The Things I Could Never Tell Steven in 2012. I had always wanted to write an intimate, one-act musical with a small-cast and minimalist-set, so when the title randomly came to me one afternoon I knew I had to explore it further. We often hear it said that 'what you don't know can't hurt you' but that's not always the case, for sometimes the very things we don't know are the very things that go on to destroy us. But is withholding information really that bad? I mean, is carefully selecting which truths we share really even considered lying? And after all, aren't we entitled to a little mystery? As a songwriter with a penchant for armchair philosophy, The Things I Could Never Tell Steven is my answer to these questions.
