SILENCE STUDIES IN THE CINEMA AND THE CASE OF ABBAS KIAROSTAMI by Babak Tabarraee M.A., Tehran University of Art, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) January 2013 © Babak Tabarraee, 2013 Abstract This thesis is an attempt to formulate a systematic framework for ‘silence studies’ in the cinema by defining silence in pragmatic terms and suggesting different forms of filmic silence. As an illustration of my model, I examine the variety of silences in the works of Abbas Kiarostami, a notable figure of Art Cinema. The analytical approach suggested here can further be applied to the works of many other Art Cinema auteurs, and, by extension, to other cinematic modes as well, for a better understanding of the functions, implications, and consequences of various forms of silence in the cinema. Chapter 1 provides a working and pragmatic description of silence, applicable to both film and other communicative forms of art. Chapter 2 represents a historical study of some of the major writings about silence in the cinema. Chapter 3 introduces, exemplifies, and analyzes the acoustic silences in the films of Kiarostami, including the five categories of complete , partial (uncovered; covered with noise, music, or perspective), character/dialogue , language , and music silences. Chapter 4 introduces the concept of meta-silence and its trans-sensorial perceptions in communication and in arts, and then defines the four categories of the visual , character/image , narrative , and political silences in Kiarostami’s oeuvre. -

It can also represent an unachievable reality. What Fereydoun Moshiri depicted as an ideal city includes a city with features such as considering humanistic dimensions, equity, tenderness and love among all human beings. The idealistic elements of Sepehri’s poems can be also considered as a mystical and romantic approach. In his magnificent collection of poems named Hasht Ketab, Sepehri has pointed out some architectural elements such as house, portal, room, mosque and etc. and also some materials such as stones, flowers, clay and so on to interpret utopia in his own way. Research objectives: The research attempts to discuss the concepts of utopia and dystopia from contemporary poet’s perspectives in both Sohrab Sepehri and Fereydoun Moshiri’s works. -

Most of the mystics of different nations regard love as one of the basic principles and teachings in the world of mysticism. Many of them have pledged underlying conditions in the path of conduct and achievement to the position of knowledge and certainty of majesty of God to elixir of love. In the school of Mowlana, love has a high status, and human perfection is possible in recognizing the Imam or leader by the combination of love. On the other hand, most of the Indian schools were influenced by “Bhakti Marga” and it was more prominently displayed in the Ramanuja School, as it grew in the works of South India and Tamil, and in the “New Age” movement continued. Therefore, in this article, we are going to examine the comparative approach of this concept based on Rumi’s poems and the teachings of Ramanuja. The Circulation of Iranian Texts around the World: The Appearance of a Transnational Iranian Publishing Industry? Laetitia Nanquette HEN ONE THINKS OF TRANSNATIONAL LITERATURE, IMAGES OF BIG GLOBAL publishers and global authors in the English language come to mind. W However, in the age of publishing conglomerates and electronic commerce does all literature circulate without frontiers? What does the study of non-Western literatures tell us about the transnational circulation of books? What about the particular case of countries such as China or Iran where there is heavy censorship as well as strong external and internal constraints to the circulation of cultural products? In this paper, I study what happens to the transnational circulation of products that do not originate from the major centres of cultural production, and consider how transnational links work on a minor scale on the margins of, although not outside, the traditional circuits. I also analyse what transnational theories can help us uncover about Iranian literary production. Although it is a dynamic field composed of texts in Persian and in the other languages used by writers of Iranian origin in the diaspora, I focus here on literary texts originating from the Iranian nation and in the Persian language. An understanding of transnationalism as ‘sustained linkages and ongoing exchanges among non-state actors based across national borders—businesses, non-government-organisations, and individuals sharing the same interests (by way of criteria such as religious beliefs, common cultural and geographic origins)’ © Australian Humanities Review 62 (November 2017). Today we have inherited the knowledge and science from scientists, scholars and elites such as Hafez, Saadi Shirazi, Omar Khayyam, Ibn Khaldun, Farabi, IRAN The Land of Glory and Beauties Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Ferdowsi and Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi. Iran is the land of souvenirs with a lot of Bazars and traditional markets. -

Abstracts Javad Abbasi Saint-Petersburg from the Perspective of Iranian Itineraries in 19th century Iran and Russia had critical and challenging relations in 19th century, well known by war, occupation and interfere from Russian side. Meantime 19th century was the era of Iranian’s involvement in European modernism and their curiosity for exploring new world. Consequently many Iranians, as official agents or explorers, traveled to Europe and Russia, including San Petersburg. Writing their itineraries, these travelers left behind a wealthy literature about their observations and considerations. San Petersburg, as the capital city of Russian Empire and also as a desirable station for travelers, was one of the most important destination for these itinerary writers. The focus of present paper is on the descriptions of these travelers about the features of San Petersburg in a comparative perspective. -

ISBN 978-91-554-9577-0 The present study explores the image of the Islamic Revolution, the concept of the hero, and the concept of martyrdom as depicted in ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in Iran compared with ten post-Revolutionary Persian novels written and published in exile. The method is based on a comparative analysis of these two categories of novels. Roland Barthes’s structuralism will be used as the theoretical tool for the analysis of the novels. The comparative analysis of the two groups of novels will be carried out within the framework of Foucault’s theory of discourse. Since its emergence, the Persian novel has been a scene for the dialogue between the five main discourses in the history of Iran since the Constitutional Revolution; this dialogue, in turn, has taken place within the larger framework of the dialogue between modernity and traditionalism. The main conclusion to be drawn from the present study is that the establishment of the Islamic Republic has merely altered the makeup of the scene, while the primary dialogue between modernity and traditionalism continues unabated. This dialogue can be heard in the way the Islamic Republic, the hero, and martyrdom are portrayed in the twenty post-Revolutionary novels in this study.
