Dr. Mihai Spariosu is a Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, in the United States. He holds an M.A. from Tulane University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University and has taught at many prominent universities around the world. He is the founder and leading theoretician of a new field of study and practice, Intercultural Knowledge Management, which he proposed and developed in two internationally acclaimed books: Global Intelligence and Human Development: Toward an Ecology of Global Learning (MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass., 2005) and Remapping Knowledge: Intercultural Studies for a Global Age (Berghahn Publishers, New York and Oxford, 2006). His most recent major publication is a historical novel on Plato and his Academy (2010). Dr. Spariosu was President of the International Foundation for Global Studies, the co-founder and former academic director of the Institute of European Studies, founder and director of the East Central European Program, and founder and former director of The Avignon Study Abroad Program at the University of Georgia. He also co-founded and co- directed The International School of Theory in the Humanities at Santiago de Compostela, Spain. He has lectured and consulted widely on the importance of an intercultural approach to scientific research, public policy, and corporate business practices. He has also organized or participated in conferences, workshops, and seminars on global learning and leadership, environmental education, transdisciplinary and intercultural curriculum development, and intercultural knowledge management. He is currently leading the development of centers of global learning in several countries and regions around the world. Questions on Global Intelligence In your recently published book Global Intelligence and Human Development, you provide a new reference point for understanding global intelligence. How do you think your global intelligence is different from the politically based globalization? 2 Interview Mihai Spariosu: In that book as well as in other recent writings, I reflect on the phenomenon of globalization primarily in its intercultural, rather than in its political or financial aspects (and I should point out that nowadays the financial and the political are more closely intertwined than ever). I seek to move away from the utilitarian mentality that is all too prevalent in our world today, and not only in the West, as well as from the modernist ideology of progress, understood as unlimited (economic) growth. Unlike neoliberal ideologues and their anti-globalist opponents, therefore, I do not see globalization as a golden opportunity for the financially wealthy to become even wealthier. Rather, I see it as a renewed opportunity for humanity to embark on a global, paradigmatic shift from a mentality of power and so-called ‘struggle for life’ toward a mentality of peace and mutually beneficial, intercultural cooperation. But, in order to bring about this paradigmatic shift we, the world communities, need to create alternative theoretical concepts and cultural blueprints and then work collectively toward their worldwide implementation. As one of these alternative concepts, I propose global intelligence, which I define as the ability to understand, respond to, and work toward what will benefit all human beings and will support and enrich all life on this planet. Global intelligence is based on the individual and collective awareness of the interdependence of all localities within a global frame of reference and the enhanced individual responsibilities that result from this interdependence. As no national or supranational authority can predefine or predetermine it, global intelligence involves long-term, collective learning processes and can emerge only from continuing intercultural research, dialogue, and cooperation. Global intelligence, therefore, ought to constitute both the premise and the goal of further human development. The phrase ‘what will benefit all human beings’ in the preceding paragraph, however, should not be understood in the utilitarian, restricted sense that implies the excessive, materialistic and consumerist mentality currently spreading over many parts of the globe. Nor should ‘human development’ be understood primarily in terms of neoliberal, economic development, as is all too often the case in public discourse today. In the long run, such utilitarian and reductive modes of thought and behavior, based on the primacy of material self-interest, will hardly benefit humankind, let alone other forms of life

His several well‐known contributions to the philosophical vocabulary, such as the "systematic Ambiguity" (tashkik) of existence and "substantial motion," were all developed to explain how the soul enters into this world through corporealization and departs from it by way spiritualization. His remarkably detailed investigations of the modalities of afterworldly experience simply illustrate his desire to explain the full range of possibilities that are open to the human soul. In order to grasp the role of perception in his overall project, it is necessary to understand the end toward which perception is directed and the nature of its final fruition. The soul perceives by nature, so much so that perception enters into its very definition. In and of themselves, however, the varieties of perception possessed by the animal soul do not suffice for the achievement of human perfection, though perception remains an essential attribute of the soul.

    Philosophy of Illumination: Suhrawardi and his School Mehdi Aminrazavi (University of Mary Washington, USA) HOW AVICENNIAN WAS SUHRAWARDI’S THEORY 1 OF KNOWLEDGE? In what follows, I will argue that, despite apparent differences and adherence to two different schools of thought, Ibn Sina and Suhrawardi essentially offer the same theories of knowledge. It will be argued that Ibn Sina’s Peripatetic orien- tation and Suhrawardi’s ishraqi perspective have both maintained and adhered to the same epistemological framework while the philosophical languages, in which their respective epistemologies are discussed, are different. Of particular interest in our investigation is to show that both masters have adhered to a hierarchy of knowledge which is as follows: 1. Knowledge by definition; 2. Knowledge by sense perception; 3. Knowledge through a priori concepts; 4. Knowledge by presence; 5. Knowledge through direct experience: mysticism. To begin with, the question of epistemology is inevitably intertwined with the ontological scheme upon which a philosophical school is built. In this regard, both Ibn Sina and Suhrawardi follow the same ontological structure although the “fabrics” of their ontologies are different, for Ibn Sina it is Being and for Suhra- wardi it is light. It is this similarity, which allows us to engage ourselves in a comparative study of their respective views on the question of knowledge. Ibn Sina and Suhrawardi both adhere to a hierarchical ontology whose vari- ous levels are emanations from One source. For Ibn Sina, this source is the wājib al-wujūd whom he equates with pure Being and for Suhrawardi it is pure light whom he refers to as the Light of Lights.

This paper is based on Iqbal’s thought of religious experience as the main study as found in his masterpiece, The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam. Qualitative-descriptive method and philosophical perspective on language were used to elaborate problems of religious and mystical experience in order to find the solution. The result of study shows that there are two aspects that must be considered to understand religious and mystical experience. The first is language of religious or mystical experience which discusses the religious or mystical experience as something uncommunicable, untransformable, and unconceptualized. The second is language about religious or mystical experience which discusses the religious or mystical experience as something communicable and conceptualized through discursive language. We represent Persian words by L-systems and calculate complexity measures of these generative systems. The complexity measures include degrees of non- constructability, generative complexity, and morphological richness; the measures are augmented with time series analysis. The measures are used in a comparative analysis of four representative poets: Rudaki (858–940 AD), Rumi (1207–1273), Sohrab (1928–1980), and Yas (1982–present). We find that irregularity of the Persian language, as characterized by the complexity measures of L-systems representing the words, increases over temporal evolution of the language. 1. There are those who claim that the utilization of the findings of modern science in the interpretation of the Qur’an and adoption of the mechanistic view of the universe was a result of this influence. It is also held that this influence prepared the ground for the emergence of his grand work, the Risale-i Nur . Yet, so far there has been no comprehensive study on the relationship between this influence and the emergence of the Risale-i Nur as a new school of thought and spirituality or a new path representing “an alliance of reason and the heart” within the universe of Islam. The purpose of this study is the explication of the relationship between Nursi’s adoption of the premises of modern science in the context of Enlightenment thought and the emergence of the Risale-i Nur as a new school, which was expected by its author to serve as an alternative to the traditional Islamic schools of thought and spirituality.

Materialet som ska analyseras utifrån den diskursanalytiska metoden består av läroböcker som undervisas till elever som kommit från persisktalande områden i Afghanistan och Iran. En genomgång av de läromedlen som används i modersmålsundervisning i persiska i Sverige visar att de har en förankring i politik, etnicitet, religion och den nationella diskursen vilket leder till att negativt påverka modersmålsundervisning i persiska i Sverige. Resultatet utifrån skolans värdegrund visar att befintliga läromedel i modersmålsundervisning i persiska är politisk färgade. Det syns tydligt hur språket som verktyg och instrument används av utbildningsväsendet för att skapa kategorier, social verklighet och att konstruera en nationalistisk normativ som ideal diskurs. Dissertation Advisor: Françoise Massardier-Kenney This dissertation addresses the need to expand translation scholarship through the inclusion of research into different translation traditions and histories (D’hulst 2001: 5; Bandia 2006; Tymoczko 2006: 15; Baker 2009: 1); the importance of compiling bibliographies of translations in a variety of translation traditions (Pym 1998: 42; D’hulst 2010: 400); and the need for empirical studies on the functional aspects of (translation) paratexts (Genette 1997: 12–15). It provides a digital bibliography that documents what works of Persian literature were translated into English, by whom, where, and when, and explores how these translations were presented to Anglophone readers across three historical periods—1925–1941, 1942–1979, and 1980–2015— marked by important socio-political events in the contemporary history of Iran and the country’s shifting relations with the Anglophone West. Through a methodical search in the library of congress catalogued in OCLC WorldCat, a bibliographical database including 863 editions of Persian-English literary translations along with their relevant metadata—titles in Persian, authors, translators, publishers, and dates and places of publication—was compiled and, through a quantitative analysis of this bibliographical data over time, patterns of translation publication across the given periods
