Especially the two large refineries MOH and HELPE, provide a major part of the income of the Greek government and help to reduce the deficits in the current account by being two of the largest export companies. Therefore, a financial analysis of the performance of these two firms and the analysis of the contribution of the oil sector in the Greek economy is quite important. The present dissertation provides a complete description of the oil sector in Greece and assesses its impact on the Greek market. Keywords HELPE, MOH, Oil sector impact. vi Περίληψη Η βιομηχανία πετρελαιοειδών έχει μεγάλη σημασία για την ελληνική οικονομία. The crisis of the Greek economy, coupled with the recession in Europe, has catalyzed the refini ng industry in Greece, leading to a significant change in the environment in which Greek refineries operate. In particular, due to domestic and international conditions, the industry faces high crude oil supply costs, low refining margins, a sharp drop in domestic demand and increased financing and energy costs. The shift to export activity gave way to Greek refineries, which, due to the fall in the domestic market, were faced with the risk of low utilization of their production capacity, which would remove them from the least efficient production scale, further bu rdening their financial results . Thus, after a period of significant investments in modernization and upgrading of their capacity and under the pressure of low domestic demand and poor prospects, t hey sought new and expanded into existing markets abroad, mainly in count ries outside the European Union . The significance of the oil sector for the Greek economy, especially during the financial crisis, is undeniable . Moreover, the vast majority of the added value of the contribution of the sector is attributed to the two large companies that own the refineries in Greece. Therefore, it is of great importance to analyze the financial indicators of the two firms since before the crisis started, in order to assess the impact of the downturn on the two companies. The purpose of the dissertation is to highlight the performance of the two companies through the presentation of the most important financial indicators and determine which one of the two managed to face the challenges of the crisis more effectively. In addition, and parallel to the evaluation of the firms’ course, the dissertation aims to depict the importance of the oil sector in general, and the two companies’ in particular, for the Greek economy. The empirical part of the dissertation consists of financial indicators for the two firms for a period of eight years, starting with 2009. These indicators depict the results of a company regarding efficiency, profitability, activity, liquidity and capital structure. These ratios are some of the most frequently used in financial analyses and 1 Vlachos George, A sectoral study on the impact of the oil companies in the Greek economy are rather easy to assess and evaluate. Furthermore, a more specialized analysis of the firms is presented in order to asses which of the two has dealt with the downtur n more efficiently. The most significant outcome of the analysis

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Environment Department of Forestry and Natural Environment MSc in Natural Resources: Monitoring, Technology and Bio – Economy «Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainability Reporting and Forest Fires: Evidence from the 2018 Megafires» Master Thesis by: Eleni Stathi Supervisor: Ioannis Gitas Thessaloniki, July 2021 Abstract This study explores the way that the top Greek and Californian corporations responded to the 2018 megafires, of Mati, Attica and Camp Fire, California. As megafires are becoming more often and their impacts more destructive, through the years, coordinated efforts are directed towards elimination of these tragic events and building of resilient communities. The private sector can play a vital role to achieving these goals, through philanthropic activities that are part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and usually expressed by the corporations’ sustainability reporting (SR). Based on CSR and natural disaster literature, and with the empirical data that were collected, the current research shows A) an important movement from both the Greek and Californian corporations towards the disaster relief efforts, B) the existence of different CSR patterns between the two regions and C) an extensive use of SR of the CSR performers. This is an empirical study among the first that comparatively examine CSR during two megafires in two different parts of the world and aims to add to the existing literature, as well as give a new perspective for future researchers, for corporations and public authorities. • Piraeus and Thessaloniki Ports: Performance and Development
IAME 2015 Conference Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Paper ID 115 Pinelopi Paspaliari, Anthony Beresford, Stephen Pettit Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, UK Piraeus and Thessaloniki ports: performance and development Abstract The study first makes a comparison between two major Greek ports; Piraeus and Thessaloniki with regard to their functionality, performance, development and their national or international roles. Secondly, the study determines the factors that are the most influential on the performance and development of the two ports. The former constitutes the most important node in the route connecting the Far East with Europe via the Suez Canal which makes it significant both to the national economy and to the economies and trade of the Eastern Mediterranean region (Psaraftis, 2007). The latter serves a wider international contestable hinterland which consists of the FYROM, southern Bulgaria, southern Serbia and the Black Sea countries. Further, Thessaloniki is the only port in Greece which is directly connected with the national rail network, it is a node in the Pan-European Corridors IV and X (Vaggelas, 2012) and it is more closely integrated into the TEN-T than the port of Piraeus. Hence the research conducts a comparative study between the ports in terms of their performance and development paths. Keywords: Port performance, port development, Piraeus, Thessaloniki 1. Introduction In recent years, seaport-specific research has become a dominant theme in the area of maritime economics studies. It comprises various themes, such as port policy, port governance and reform, competition between ports, performance of ports, management and strategy, planning and Piraeus and Thessaloniki ports: performance and development Paper ID 115 development of ports, spatial analysis, etc., while new themes constantly emerge over time, reflecting the evolution of the port industry such as the changing role of seaports in supply chains and logistics.
