2002 RULE CHANGES SOURCE: AMERICAN VOLLEYBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION

For the second consecutive year, women’s collegiate breaking fifth game will be played to 15. This system replaces volleyball has undergone a major overhaul in its rules – the traditional side-out scoring format. including the manner in which the rules are governed. • Let serves are now in play and servers are allowed only The 2002 season marks the first year during which the one toss per serve. Previously, the • The international pursuit rule, in which a player may college game complied with rules put forth by The National cross the center line to retrieve a ball as long as it is returned Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). outside the antenna. The most substantial rule change adopted for 2002 is the addition of the libero, which is already in use throughout club and international volleyball, as well as the men’s game. The libero is a designated back-row player, similar to the defensive specialist, but with a few important distinctions: • The libero may replace any player in the back row without counting as a substitution. • The color of the libero’s uniform must contrast from that of her teammate’s (akin to the goalkeeper in soccer). • The libero plays only in the back row, may not serve or attempt to block. She also may not attack the ball if contact is made while the ball is completely above the height of the net. • The libero’s teammates may not attack the ball if the libero sets it from the attack zone using an overhand finger pass. However, they may attack a ball from the libero if it is passed in a manner different from the traditional setter’s technique OR from behind the attack line. While the libero may be introduced as a seventh starter, she is not designated among the six starters for the game. Furthermore, the libero is designated on a game-by-game basis, allowing the player to switch to a non-libero position in a subsequent game. Finally, when a libero is replaced, she must sit out one rally before returning. The implementation of the libero also reduces the total number of substitutions allowed to 12 per game. Other rule changes effective in 2002 include: •␣ Teams must switch sides at eight points in the fifth and deciding game.

AGGIE PROFILES ␣ •␣ Expulsion/disqualification of a player results in a loss of rally and thus, a point for the opposing team. The major rule changes in 2001 included: Sophomore Mary Clelland should become the first libero in UC Davis volleyball history. • Matches consist of best-of-five rally scoring games, in which the first four are played to 30 points, and the tie-
