About ‘Gro Brundtland Week’
Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland has been a global leader in promoting sustainable development for the benefit of humanity for more than 30 years. She was awarded the 2014 Tang Prize in Sustainable Development for her innovation, leadership and implementation of sustainable development that laid out the scientific and technical challenges for the global community to achieve a better balance of economic development, environmental integrity, and social equality for the benefit of all humanity.
Dr. Brundtland provides part of the rewards to promote the sustainable development, especially for public health, in the developing countries. She aims to promote the involvement of younger women researchers from developing countries in the issues of sustainable development and equitable health systems. President Huey-Jen Jenny Su from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is committed to best manage this budget to achieve the goal through a 3-year project under the agreement of Dr. Brundtland and Tang Prize Foundation.
One-week science activity in Taiwan - including plenary sessions, symposiums, panel discussions and exhibitions - about global issues related to sustainable development in public health, are held annually for a total of three years. Each year, five qualified female researchers from developing countries or Taiwan will be invited and subsidized to present their work during the week. Building a network and support system among female scientists from different countries will be emphasized throughout the event. Also, the interest of general population in the area of sustainable development, and communication of the relevance in everyday life will be encouraged and promoted.

Plenary Speakers March 29 │National Taiwan University, Taipei │ 09:00 - 10:20 The challenges of economic sustainability of health care in the era of cancer immunotherapy Alice Lin-Tsing Yu, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital & Chang Gung University, Taoyung, Taiwan Dr. Yu has a longstanding interest in translational research, aiming to bridge the gap between laboratory research and clinical medicine. In particular, she has been pursuing therapy targeting specific molecular alterations in cancer from small molecules to biologics. She has led several nationwide cooperative group clinical trials in the USA. She is now developing therapeutic cancer vaccines targeting GD2 with anti-idiotypic antibody for neuroblastoma and melanoma, and glycans such as GloboH and Gb5 with synthetic carbohydrates for the treatment of epithelial cancers including cancers of breast, lung, ovary, pancreas, etc. She has a broad spectrum of research interest ranging from molecular signature of cancer and cancer stem cells, cell cycle regulation, in vitro and in vivo preclinical screening of novel therapeutic agents, design, development and implementation of clinical protocols for immunotherapy and other clinical investigation. Hsiung, National Health Research Institutes, Miaoli, Taiwan Dr. Hsiung's current research interests include genetic epidemiology and genomics research. Her research team has established the Healthy Aging Longitudinal Study in Taiwan(HALST). Many aspects of aging including nutrition, life style, biomarkers etc. have been studied through this cohort study. Her research team has also participated in the international genetic study ─ Stanford Asia Pacific Program in Hypertension and Insulin Resistance (SAPPHIRe), and later extended to TAICHI study on Metabochip, THRV study on rare variants in hypertension among Chinese. Collaborating with several medical centers in Taiwan, rich clinical, environmental and genetic data were collected and analyzed. The research team has also established the Genetic Epidemiological Study of Lung Adenocarcinoma (GELAC) with six hospitals in Taiwan. Recently they have collaborated with NCI of NIH-US on non-smoking female lung cancer and other topics. They have also worked on pharmacogenomics topics for lung cancer.

April 2 │National Chung Hsing University, Taichung│ 09:30 - 10:30 The Battle Against Lung Cancer Yi-Ching Wang, National Cheng-Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan Prof. Wang received her PhD in Genetics from Michigan State University. Prof. Wang studies the molecular mechanisms in lung tumorigenesis focusing on tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes. Recently, Prof. Wang has continued to do research on cancer genomics and epigenomics of DNA methylation and chromatin alteration profiles to identify new genes critical to lung tumorigenesis. Several potential anti-cancer drugs are developing in her laboratory. Prof. Wang has published more than 100 papers on lung cancer including prestigious journals such as J Clin Oncol and J Clin Invest in the past 23 years. Dr. Wang is the recipient of the Excellent Research Award of Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology.

In the 1980s she gained international recognition, championing the principle of sustainable development as the chair of the World Commission of Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission). She was awarded the 2014 Tang Prize in Sustainable Development for her innovation, leadership and implementation of sustainable development that laid out the scientific and technical challenges for the global community to achieve a better balance of economic development, environmental integrity, and social equality for the benefit of all humanity.
