The prevalence of obligate parasitic fungi may depend partly on the environmental conditions prevailing in the habitats of their hosts. Ectoparasitic fungi of the order Laboulbeniales (Ascomycetes) infect arthropods and form thalli on the host’s body sur- face. Although several studies report the incidence of infection of certain host species by these fungi, quantitative data on laboulbe- nialean fungus-host arthropod interactions at the host assemblage level are rarely reported. To clarify the effects of host habitats on infection by ectoparasitic fungi, the incidence of infection by fungi of the genus Laboulbenia (Laboulbeniales) of overwintering carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in three habitats, a riverside (reeds and vines), a secondary forest and farmland (rice and vegetable fields), were compared in central Japan. Of the 531 adults of 53 carabid species (nine subfamilies) collected in the three habitats, a Laboulbenia infection of one, five and one species of the carabid subfamilies Pterostichinae, Harpalinae and Callistinae, respectively, was detected. Three species of fungus were identified: L. coneglanensis, L. pseudomasei and L. fasciculate. The inci- dence of infection by Laboulbenia was higher in the riverside habitat (8.97% of individuals; 14/156) than in the forest (0.93%; 2/214) and farmland (0%; 0/161) habitats.

The precise systematic position of two species belonging to the tribe Patrobini, namely Dimor- phopatrobus businskyi Casale & Sciaky (SE Tibet, Tsema La Pass) and Ledouxius kaganensis (Heinz & Ledoux) (Pakistan, vicinity of Naran) is ascertained and substantiated by the means of the external mor- phology studies, cladistic analysis and similarity measurements. A new genus Prodiplous gen. n., close to Diplous Motschulsky and its allies, is erected for D. businskyi. L. kaganensis possesses several impor- tant distinctions from Ledouxius s. str. and resembles in some respects another genus of the subtribe Del- tomerina – Himalopenetretus Zamotajlov. Hasarotretus subgen. n. is erected in Ledouxius Zamotajlov for L. kaganensis. Two species of the genus Parapenetretus Kurnakov are also described from China: P. med- vedevi sp. n. The monophyly of Trechitaeis strongly supportedwith fiveuniquesynapomorphies. Themonophyly of Zolini þ Bembidiini þ Pogonini is supported with two synapo- morphies. We propose that the tribe Trechini is a sister group to them and its monophyly is supported with two unique synapomorphies. The inferred branching pattern of Trechini genera is (Perileptus þ Thalassophilus) þ (Amblystogenium þ (Trechimorphus þ (Trechus þ Epaphius þ Aepopsis þ Trechisibus))); Perileptus is a member of Trechodina rather than Trechina. The monophyly of Zolini is not supported. Themonophyly of Pogonini is supportedwith two uniquesynapomorph- ies; its sister group relationships remain obscure; the branching pattern of pogonine genera is (((Pogonus þ Pogonistes) þ Cardiaderus) þ Thalassotrechus). No evidence for monophyly of thetribeBembidiini ( s. lato; including subtribes Bembidiina, Tachyina, Xystosomina, and Anillina) was found. Therelationships of Phrypeus are obscure; no evidence could be found linking it with Bembidiina. Without Phrypeus, Bembidiina might bea monophylum with a singlesynapomorphy.

Two new species, H. infinitus Brunke & Smetana, sp. n. and H. castoris Brunke & Smetana, sp. n., from eastern North America are described, and H. ferox (LeConte), restricted to peninsular Florida, is re-described. Hemiquedius castoris is strongly associated with the microhabitats provided by nest materials of the North American beaver and muskrat. A key to the three species of Hemiquedius is provided and diagnostic characters are illustrated. We also review the beetles known to be obligate associates of beavers and muskrats, and discuss the potential role of these keystone vertebrates in beetle evolution and distribution.

We also selected the potential bioindicators classifying land-use types; eleven sites were selected from an urban landscape in Korea. Overall, land-use types in urban landscapes did not appear to cause significant decrease in species richness or the abundance of total ground beetle as- semblage. According to habitat preferences, several land-use types and distances from the forest significantly affected the species richness and abundance, while the open-habitat species were not affected by these variables. Land-use types were classified into two major groups, forest and non-forest areas, based on ground beetle assemblage; several indicators, such as Dolichus halensis halensis and subfamily Carabinae species, were of particular consideration. In conclusion, en- vironmental change by anthropogenic disturbance can cause different effects on ground beetle assemblages, and forest specialists can be negatively affected.

Treatment of the name Patrobus septentrionis Dejen, 1828 as nomen protectum and P. alpinus Curtis, 1827 as nomen oblitum is proved, the name P. cinctus Motschulsky, 1860 is resurrected and a new synonymy is established: P. australis J. Sahlberg, 1873 is regarded to be a new synonym of P. septentrionis Dejean, 1828; P. fuscipennis Motschulsky, 1860 and P. tritus Casey, 1920 – synonyms of P. cinctus Motschulsky, 1860, and P. borealis Motschulsky, 1844 – synonym of P. assimilis Chaudoir, 1844. Taxonomy, nomenclature, synonymy, Coleoptera, Carabidae, Patrobus, Holarctic region INTRODUCTION The genus Patrobus Dejean, 1821 houses species, possessing the widest ranges of all known patrobines, only three genera, namely Archipatrobus Zamotajlov, 1992, Diplous Motschulsky, 1850 and Platidiolus Chadoir, 1878 being comparable in this respect. Several congeners form continuous Palaearctic, Nearctic or Holarctic (mainly circumpolar, boreal or boreomountainous) ranges, reaching the Lower Arctic. Patrobus septentrionis and related taxa seem to have the largest range, manifesting simultaneously the highest ecological valency. They occur at the banks of rivers and lakes with extremely humid conditions, at bogs, in bushes, heather and willow undergrowth, at grassy slopes, meadows and in tundra. Some of them easily bear cold, imago being common near snow or even on snow, larvae are known hunting on snow in winter e.g., Böcher (1988). This abundance of populated biotopes and localities results in numerous forms hitherto described, with the taxonomic status requiring precision.

New state records are Agonum cupreum Dejean, Amara anthobia Villa and Villa, Anisodactylus laetus Dejean, Bembidion intermedium Kirby, Bembidion sejunctum sejunctum Casey, Brachinus vulcanoides Erwin, Diplocheila impressicollis Dejean, Elaphropus dolosus LeConte, Lebia grandis Hentz, Myas coracinus Say, Olisthopus micans LeConte, Panagaeus fasciatus Say, Pentagonica picticornis Bates, and Tachyta parvicornis Notman. The record for B. sejunctum sejunctum is the first for the species in the eastern United States. A recent record for Omophron labiatum (F.) in the state could not be substantiated by any specimen. Notes on biology are presented for species for which that knowledge exists.

Gariwang in Pyeongchang, Gangwon- do and their previous distribution in nearby places, as well as provide fundamental information on community structure and diversity of ground beetles. A total of 15 species belonging to 8 genera of 4 subfamilies were identified from 244 collected ground beetles in Mt. Gariwang. Nine species of Pterostichinae and 4 Carabinae species were collected the most and the abundance of Pterostichus and Synuchus genus were 89 and 83, respectively. The dominant species were Synuchus sp. (64 individuals, 26.2%) and Eucarabus cartereti cartereti (40 individuals, 16.4%). The Korean endemic species were 98 individuals of 6 species. The ground beetles at mountainous areas in Pyeongchang, Inje, Wonju and Taebaek from the Taebaek Mountains including Mt. Odae, Mt. Chiak, Mt. Gyebang, Mt. Jeombong, Mt. Taebaek, Mt. Balwang and Mt. Bangtae are identified in 140 species belonging to 51 genera of 15 subfamilies.

Ground beetles were collected by pitfall trapping. A total of 38 species of 20 genera belonging to 8 subfamilies were identified from 2,486 collected ground beetles. Species richness was high in Pterostichinae (16 species), Carabinae (8 species), Harpalinae (5 species), Callistinae (3 species), Nebriinae (3 species) and others (1 species). Dominant species were Synuchus cycloderus (1,025 individuals) and Aulonocarabus seishinensis seishinensis (332 individuals), Pristosia vigil (133 individuals), and Coptolabrus smaragdinus branickii (117 individuals) in order. Monthly changes in abundance of upper dominante genera Pterostichus, Aulonocarabus, Coptolabrus species and Synuchus, Pristosia, Colpodes species showed that the former had the highest number in August whereas the latter increased in June and September. The genus Pterostichus species were preferred in deciduous forest in Wangpi- cheon watershed, while the genus Synuchus species were collected in mixes forest adjacent to farmland and recreation facilities and the genera Chlaenius, Harpalus species were collected in mixes forest adjacent to farmland nearby stream.
