Carabids were Jorhat, Assam, India collected by pitfall trap, light trap, sweep net and hand picking from okra, brinjal, cabbage, cucumber and bean. Total 12 species of carabids belonging to 7 genera viz., Clivina, Scarites, Harpalus, Pherosophus, Dilip Kumar Saikia Pterostichus, Chlaenius, and Sparostes under 6 tribes- Clivinini, Scaritini, Harpalini, Brachinini, Department of Entomology, Pterostichini and Chlaeniini and 5 subfamily (Scaritinae, Harpalinae, Brachininae, Pterostichinae and Assam Agricultural University, Licininae) were identified by following published Keys and literature and described on the basis of Jorhat, Assam, India observed morphological characters. Among these species, 3 under Clivina viz., C. assamensis, C. memnonia, C. lobata and 2 under Scarites, Harpalus and Pherosophus each viz., S. indus, S. inconspicuous, H. rufipes, H. calceatus, P. occipitalis and Pherosophus sp. From Pterostichus, Chlaenius and Sparostes, there was one species of each genus viz., Pterostichus madidus, C. bimaculatus and Sparostes striatulus. Highest collection of carabids were obtained from pitfall trap (46%) followed by light trap (42%). -

W ILL1 Department of Entomology Cornell University Ithaca, NY 14853-0901, U.S.A. Abstract Harpalus (Pseudoophonus) poncei new species is described from Florida, USA, based on three specimens, all collected in 1963. This species may be a Florida endemic over- looked by collectors or an undescribed adventive species. In the course of my review of the subgenus Megapangus Casey (Harpalini: Harpalus Latreille) (Will 1997), I found two specimens identi®ed as H. (Me- gapangus) caliginosus (Fabricius) in the Cornell University Insect Collection, Ithaca, NY (CUIC), that by their relatively pale legs stood out as different from all other specimens I had examined (individuals of Megapangus have black legs [Fig. 1]). Upon closer inspection I found that these two individuals had the characteristics of the subgenus Pseudoophonus Motschulsky and not Megapangus. Comparison with Harpalus specimens in museums throughout North America resulted in only a single additional specimen from the United States National Museum, Washington, D.C. (USNM). North American Harpalus species have been treated in several excellent works (Ball and Anderson 1962; Lindroth 1968; Noonan 1991). However, it not surprising that a species of Pseudoophonus from Florida would have re- mained unnoticed. Lindroth's faunal work focuses on the northern North Amer- ican taxa, Ball and Anderson's monograph on Pseudoophonus predates the ®rst collection record known for this species, and Noonan's publication ex- cludes Pseudoophonus taxa since those taxa were covered previously. Methods General preparation and taxonomic methods and concepts used are the same as previously described by Will (1998) and Will and Liebherr (1997). -
From Characters of the Female Reproductive Tract

WILL* Inferring phylogenetic relationships within Carabidae (Insecta, Coleoptera) from characters of the female reproductive tract ABSTRACT Characters of the female reproductive tract, ovipositor, and abdomen are analyzed using cladi stic parsimony for a comprehensive representation of carabid beetle tribes. The resulting cladogram is rooted at the family Trachypachidae. No characters of the female reproductive tract define the Carabidae as monophyletic. The Carabidac exhibit a fundamental dichotomy, with the isochaete tri bes Metriini and Paussini forming the adelphotaxon to the Anisochaeta, which includes Gehringiini and Rhysodini, along with the other groups considered member taxa in Jeannel's classification. Monophyly of Isochaeta is supported by the groundplan presence of a securiform helminthoid scle rite at the spermathecal base, and a rod-like, elongate laterotergite IX leading to the explosion cham ber of the pygidial defense glands. Monophyly of the Anisochaeta is supported by the derived divi sion of gonocoxa IX into a basal and apical portion. Within Anisochaeta, the evolution of a secon dary spermatheca-2, and loss ofthe primary spermathcca-I has occurred in one lineage including the Gehringiini, Notiokasiini, Elaphrini, Nebriini, Opisthiini, Notiophilini, and Omophronini. This evo lutionary replacement is demonstrated by the possession of both spermatheca-like structures in Gehringia olympica Darlington and Omophron variegatum (Olivier). The adelphotaxon to this sper matheca-2 clade comprises a basal rhysodine grade consisting of Clivinini, Promecognathini, Amarotypini, Apotomini, Melaenini, Cymbionotini, and Rhysodini. The Rhysodini and Clivinini both exhibit a highly modified laterotergite IX; long and thin, with or without a clavate lateral region. -

Baehr (1997) assigned three species from Australia to this genus, albeit in a new subgenus, Austropseudomorpha Baehr 1997. A recent study of col- lections from throughout the Americas (1757 specimens) has revealed numerous new species that can be arrayed across 19 species groups based on a suite of attributes, some used by Notman and others newly discovered. -

Taylor, Chair, Director of Research Adjunct Assistant Professor Sam W. Heads Associate Professor Andrew V. Suarez ABSTRACT Formally assessing biodiversity can be a daunting if not impossible task. Subsequently, specific taxa are often chosen as indicators of patterns of diversity as a whole. Mapping the locations of indicator taxa can inform conservation planning by identifying land units for management strategies. For this approach to be successful, though, land units must be effective spatial representations of the species assemblages present on the landscape. In this study, I determined whether land units classified by vegetative communities predicted the community structure of a diverse group of invertebrates—the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Specifically, that (1) land units of the same classification contained similar carabid species assemblages and that (2) differences in species structure were correlated with variation in land unit characteristics, including canopy and ground cover, vegetation structure, tree density, leaf litter depth, and soil moisture. The study site, the Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserve in Will County, Illinois is a mosaic of differing land units. Beetles were sampled continuously via pitfall trapping across an entire active season from 2011–2012. Land unit characteristics were measured in July 2012. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordinated the land units by their carabid assemblages into five ecologically meaningful clusters: disturbed, marsh, prairie, restoration, and savanna. -

Carabid beetles were collected with the help of pitfall traps and identified up to specie level with the help of available literature. We identified five species under three genera belonging to 3 sub-families. These sub families are Licininae, Carabinae, Brachininae and the species are Carabus caschmirensis, Chlaenius quadricolar, Pheropsophus sobrinus, Chlaenius laticollis, and Chlaenius hamifer. Carabus cashmirensis was the most abundant species. It was followed by Chlaenius quadricolar, Pheropsophus sobrinus, Chlaenius laticollis, and Chlenius hamifer. Introduction Poonch district is of subtropical high land type to temperate area of southern Azad Kashmir receives an average rainfall of 1400 – 1800mm annually. The temperature ranges from 2C˚ to 38C˚ during extreme winter it falls below 0C˚. Some of major plants as apple, some citrus, walnut, apricot and many others along with thick mixed forests of evergreen pine, deodar, blue pine cedar trees and fir are present in study area. Surveyed area hosts the family Carabidae while an estimation of 40,000 species throughout the world [1]. -
Effects of Hydrological Modifications and Nature Restoration Projects on Ground Beetles Along the Yodo River, Osaka Prefecture, Japan

More recently, riverine restoration projects involving excavation of major beds designed to prevent them from drying out have recently been conducted. A field survey of carabid ground beetle assemblages using unbaited pitfall traps was conducted in the Yodo River riverbed from April to December 2009 to elucidate the influence of both hydrological modification and nature restoration activities on the assemblages. Ground beetles were captured for two weeks each month at 13 sites. Also, we measured four environmental parameters, riverbed conditions(minor or major beds), submergence duration, soil moisture and median soil particle diameter, at each site. A total of 8,697 ground beetles belonging to 65 species were captured during the surveys. Generalized linear mixed model analysis showed that the abundance of nine species, such as Oodes vicarius, Pterostichus eschscholtzii and Pterostichus prolongatus, was positively correlated with the existence of minor beds and submergence duration or soil moisture, while that of 10 other species, such as Carabus yaconinus, Lesticus magnus and Synuchus nitidus, was negatively correlated with existence of minor beds, soil moisture rate and/ or submergence duration. -

The following gen- era are the most diverse: Bembidion (47 species), Amara and Harpalus (21 each), Pterostichus (14), and Nebria (13). The subarid (35%) and boreal (32%) species prevail in the arealogical spectrum, while the mountain endem- ics comprise 13% of the fauna. The carabid fauna of SEA is heterogeneous in composition and differs significantly from that of the Western and Central Altai. The boreal mountain component mostly comprises tundra species with circum-boreal or circum-arctic ranges, while the subarid component (typical Mongolian together with Ancient Mediterranean species) forms more than one-half of the species diversity in the mountain basins. The species diver- sity increases from the nival mountain belt (15 species, predominantly Altai-Sayan endemics) to moss-lichen tun- dras (40, mostly boreal, species). -

The precise systematic position of two species belonging to the tribe Patrobini, namely Dimor- phopatrobus businskyi Casale & Sciaky (SE Tibet, Tsema La Pass) and Ledouxius kaganensis (Heinz & Ledoux) (Pakistan, vicinity of Naran) is ascertained and substantiated by the means of the external mor- phology studies, cladistic analysis and similarity measurements. A new genus Prodiplous gen. n., close to Diplous Motschulsky and its allies, is erected for D. businskyi. L. kaganensis possesses several impor- tant distinctions from Ledouxius s. str. and resembles in some respects another genus of the subtribe Del- tomerina – Himalopenetretus Zamotajlov. Hasarotretus subgen. n. is erected in Ledouxius Zamotajlov for L. kaganensis. Two species of the genus Parapenetretus Kurnakov are also described from China: P. med- vedevi sp. n.
