Dr. Baldwin's 'Memorial' Boxwood The First 80 Years William A. Gray

Laura Poulson, born in Iowa, died in Williamsburg, Virginia at the early age of eighteen on August 24th, 1907. She was buried in the Cedar Grove Ceme tery on South Henry Street, Williams burg. At the foot of the grave, her grieving family planted a single boxwood - one which to them must have seemed unusually attractive. Nearly fifty years later, Merlin C. Larson, then grounds manager at the Cemetery, recognized this boxwood as an especially desirable specimen of and began to take clippings for propagation. Mr. Larson was also a dedicated plantsman, with living quarters, work place, and nursery beds on the property of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Cocke at 120 Ridings Cove across South Henry Street not far from the Cedar Grove Cemetery. In subse quent years, Mr. Larson produced several hundred from this clone; these were distributed to a number of landscapes in the Williamsburg area, including Colonial Williamsburg. Most Williamsburg residents were, and still are, aware of only two kinds of box wood: "English" and "American." It would appear that Merlin Larson's unusual plants survived, but that most are now hidden to posterity among the thousands of other boxwoods. The late Dr. John T. Baldwin, Jr., set the record straight in 1967 when he Buxus sempervirens'Memorial' in the ABS Memorial Garden is 2ft high and described the at Laura Poulson's 1 314ft wide at 14 years.
