  • Greenberg (2011)
Greenberg (2011) “You like me so much more than you think you do.” Major Credits: Director: Noah Baumbach Screenplay: Noah Baumbach, from a story by Baumbach and Jennifer Jason Leigh Cinematography: Harris Savides Music: James Murphy Principal Cast: Ben Stiller (Roger Greenberg), Greta Gerwig (Florence), Rhys Ifans (Ivan), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Beth) Production Background: Baumbach, the son of two prominent New York writers whose divorce he chronicled in his earlier feature The Squid and the Whale (2005), co-wrote the screenplay with his then-wife, Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays the role of Greenberg’s former girlfriend. His friend and sometime collaborator (they wrote The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou together), Wes Anderson, co-produced Greenberg with Leigh. Most of Baumbach’s films to date deal with characters who are disappointed in their lives, which do not conform to their ideal conceptions of themselves. At whatever age—a father in his 40s, his pretentious teenage son (The Squid and the Whale), a college graduate in her late twenties (Frances Ha, 2012)—they struggle to act like grownups. The casting of Greta Gerwig developed into an enduring romantic and creative partnership: Gerwig co-wrote and starred in his next two films, Frances Ha and Mistress America (2015). You can read about Baumbach and Gerwig in Ian Parker’s fine article published in New Yorker, April 29, 2013. Cinematic Qualities: 1. Screenplay: Like the work of one of his favorite filmmakers, Woody Allen, Baumbach’s dramedy combines literate observation (“All the men dress up as children and the children dress as superheroes”) and bitter commentary (“Life is wasted on… people”) with poignant confession (“It’s huge to finally embrace the life you never planned on”).

Hollywood: Her Story February 2020 ENewsletter Oscar Wrap Up The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced this year’s Oscar winners! Let’s take a look at how the women fared in this 92nd year of Oscar history. Let’s celebrate the women who took home the acting Oscars. Renee Zellweger has received four acting Oscar nominations, including two Oscar wins. She received the Best Actress Oscar this year for her performance as Judy Garland in Judy. After two other acting nominations, Laura Dern received the Best Supporting Actress award this year for Marriage Story. Kwak Sin Ae shared a Best Picture Oscar for Parasite, which won for Best Picture and for Best International Feature Film. Women have been historically strong in a number of categories. In Best Costume Design, Jacqueline Durran received her seventh nomination this year and her second Oscar win for Little Women. Anne Morgan and Vivian Baker shared their first Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Bombshell. In Best Production Design, Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh won for Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. Nancy Haigh has another Oscar win and six other nominations under her belt. It can be argued that the biggest win of the evening was in the category ofB est Original Score. Only twelve women have received nominations in this category over the years. When Hildur Guðnadóttir won the Oscar for her musical score for Joker, she became the fourth woman to win in this category. • Actors' Stories Are a SAG Awards® Tradition
Actors' Stories are a SAG Awards® Tradition When the first Screen Actors Guild Awards® were presented on March 8, 1995, the ceremony opened with a speech by Angela Lansbury introducing the concept behind the SAG Awards and the Actor® statuette. During her remarks she shared a little of her own history as a performer: "I've been Elizabeth Taylor's sister, Spencer Tracy's mistress, Elvis' mother and a singing teapot." She ended by telling the audience of SAG Awards nominees and presenters, "Tonight is dedicated to the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it: actors. And remember, you're one too!" Over the Years This glimpse into an actor’s life was so well received that it began a tradition of introducing each Screen Actors Guild Awards telecast with a distinguished actor relating a brief anecdote and sharing thoughts about what the art and craft mean on a personal level. For the first eight years of the SAG Awards, just one actor performed that customary opening. For the 9th Annual SAG Awards, however, producer Gloria Fujita O'Brien suggested a twist. She observed it would be more representative of the acting profession as a whole if several actors, drawn from all ages and backgrounds, told shorter versions of their individual journeys. To add more fun and to emphasize the universal truths of being an actor, the producers decided to keep the identities of those storytellers secret until they popped up on camera. An August Lineage Ever since then, the SAG Awards have begun with several of these short tales, typically signing off with his or her name and the evocative line, "I Am an Actor™." So far, audiences have been delighted by 107 of these unique yet quintessential Actors' Stories.
