About Street Reach

Street Reach is a charity working with young people in and the surrounding areas.

Established in 1983, our work is open to all young people and is particularly targeted towards those experiencing disadvantage.

Our approach in working with young people is primarily through Detached Youth Work; outreach work in local communities. We build relationships with young people in order that we may offer support, advice and opportunities. We run a youth club in village and also offer drop-in projects and trips.

Our work with young people is always on a voluntary basis and our approach is founded upon building relationships over time. Through listening to the young people we work with, we are able to adapt and respond to their needs in order to provide effective support. We work in partnership with the young people to design creative and engaging projects

Chairman’s Report

Firstly, on behalf of the young people in Winchester, I would like to give our thanks to our funders, and staff.

This year has been one of consolidation as our reach into the community continues to grow.

We continued our detached work in the city, Youth Club at Micheldever, and regular weekly Friday Football throughout the year.

Workshops to increase female participation were popular and we developed the original weekly winter sessions into popular monthly sessions in the summer months. Numbers attending have been growing steadily. Jackie Porter

We wanted to show the impact of our work. It is hard to ‘measure’ this. Only our young people and our staff can see what difference the support makes as the months pass. We piloted the use of the Children’s Society Wellbeing survey to see if it increased our understanding of the challenges that face our young people. The tool is respected but we have much more to do to make it a young person friendly activity!

The new, more accessible website was launched in Spring 2017.This is the foundation on which we will be building in the next year, providing information to young people not only in Winchester.

Our reputation in the community continues to grow and we are grateful for every penny of support that comes our way. Local residents and businesses make amazing gestures of support, big and smaller. A previous Trustee, Phryn Dickens persuaded the Mayor to join her to go Wing Walking for Street Reach at the end of the year! A recent craft event raised £55- enough money to fund a session with young people. Our financial position is now good, allowing us to grow services- albeit carefully.

Our trustees continue to be a critical friend to the charity working to ensure high quality governance and a strategic view.

We continue to have excellent support and new members join to keep our team strong. Their support is greatly appreciated.

Project Manager’s Report

The year 2016-17 has been focussed around strengthening our established projects, increasing the impact of our work and expanding our local profile.

Our core work is to deliver detached outreach support on set evenings in our target communities of Weeke, Harestock, Winnall and Stanmore. Our teams of youth workers engage with young people out and about in their local community and offer direct support in order to help young people keep safe and make positive lifestyle choices. Our service is open to all young people, however our approach means that we are able to target young people in need and those experiencing disadvantage.

In 2016-17 we fully embedded our drop-in surgeries meaning that in each of our target areas, young people are able to meet with us at set times at an accessible location in their community. Young people are consistently making use of these surgeries to engage with us and to access support in times of need. Our partners are able to signpost young people to these meeting points as a way of informal introduction, allowing us to have a ‘first conversation’ with them; the crucial starting point from which the support we offer is built. Our Weeke Surgery

Street Reach run a centre-based youth club in the village of Micheldever. We run the youth club with the same approach as our detached outreach by delivering a weekly project available locally to young people and by establishing meaningful relationships over time. The club is a much-needed facility for young people, offering a wide range of activities as well as providing targeted support to young people in need and experiencing disadvantage.

In 2016-17, we have worked with 395 different young people through our outreach work, and 35 different young people through Micheldever Youth Club.

Street Reach also offer a range of exciting projects that we create in partnership with young people engaging with us. We utilise the relationships built through our core work in order to create opportunities that inform and challenge young people.

Friday football is thriving year-round project, with an average of 25 participants per week, and with approximately one third female attendees. Our team deliver important support ‘off pitch’ to attendees.

Friday Football

Our Girls’ Project was a targeted, centre-based project delivered over 10 weeks from November 2016. The project set out to increase female engagement, build confidence amongst participants and help reduce vulnerability. Eight participants engaged in the project, with 75% attending seven or more sessions. The number of different females working with us over the three month period increased from 18 in the previous year to 34 in 2016-17 as a result of the project.

Our 2016 summer Camping Residential targeted young people experiencing disadvantage. Nine young people attended the trip from areas across Winchester. The group took part in a range of challenging outdoor activities. This project is a unique opportunity for young people to spend time away from home to develop life skills and to push themselves out of their comfort zone.

The year 2016-17 has been a period in which we have significantly grown our local profile. With funding from the 2016 Fulflood Ball, we built and launched our new website that promotes our projects to professionals, service users and their families. Our work has featured in a number of print publications through the year, and in October 2016 our project was featured on BBC South Today.

We have received vital funding from a diverse range of sources, including continued support from County Council, Winchester City Council and BBC Children In Need. We also received donations from trust funds and local organisations. We were a chosen beneficiary for the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Jane Rutter, whose fundraising efforts included completing a wing walk together with former Street Reach Trustee Phryn Dickens.

I would like to thank the dedicated team of staff and trustees at Street Reach. I would also like to thank our sponsors and partners whose support makes our work possible.

Treasurer’s Report

Following a bumper year for grants and donations in 2015-16 we started the year with a healthy balance of £80,851. This meant that we were able to designate £59,772 to our project reserves meaning that most of the cost of running our projects was already in place.

Our Project Fundraiser and Project Manager have done an amazing job once again in raising funds and we received £78,057 over the course of the year. We spent a total of £74,849 on our 5 different projects this year. This represents a massive 31% increase on 2015-16. Yet, we are still in the fortunate position of having £84,059 in total assets for use in 2017-18. Katy Toms

The Trustees have agreed a Reserves Policy this year, setting out our aim to maintain reserves of 12 months project expenditure, which we have currently achieved. We believe that one of the most important aspects of our work is the continuity of our projects, the success of which relies on building up long term relationships with vulnerable young people. It is therefore important that we can guarantee that our projects will continue for the next 12 months, while we seek funding for future years.

Another focus this year has been upon determining the real costs involved in each individual project. This makes it easier to present accurate grant proposals for each project and also to establish that we are getting best value for money at an individual project level. The amounts spent on each project in 2016- 17 were as follows:

Main Project £49,149.54 Micheldever Youth Club £7,224.81 Girls Project £3,999.83 Friday Football £4,190.79 Camping £3,798.18 Website £5,083.24

This work will continue in 2017-18 and we are looking at breaking down the project costs even further in order to accurately determine how central administrative costs can be split between each project. This will make it possible to present funders with a clearer idea of how their money has been spent.

In 2016-17 our major funding came from and Winchester City Council but we also received over £9,000 from Children in Need, £10,000 from Henry Smith and a massive £11, 650 from the Fulflood Ball which was very much appreciated!

Smaller donors included the Big Lottery, Doris Campbell, the Roundtable, Zurich Community Fund and the Show. While, Ben raised a massive £1,104 with a 10K River Swim last September. The full list for 2016-17 is outlined on the following page.
