Elvis Presley's 'Where No One Stands Alone' Elvis Presley's Where No One Stands Alone is His First #1 on the Billboard Christian Album Chart New Elvis Album Also Enters #1 on the Billboard Physical Albums Chart & Billboard Vinyl Albums Chart Top 10 Album in the UK August 20, 2018-New York, NY-Elvis Presley has entered the Billboard Top Christian album chart at #1--a first for the legendary artist--with Where No One Stands Alone, a groundbreaking new album on RCA/Legacy celebrating the singer's everlasting love of gospel music. The new collection is also #1 on the Billboard Physical Albums chart and the Billboard Vinyl Albums chart. The album debuted in the Top 10 in the UK, marking his 53rd UK Top 10 album. While three contemporary gospel albums recorded by Elvis--His Hand In Mine (1960, RIAA Platinum), How Great Thou Art (1967, RIAA 3x Platinum) and He Touched Me (1972, RIAA Platinum)--were released during the artist's lifetime, Where No One Stands Alone is the first Elvis album to hit #1 on the Billboard Christian album chart. Elvis Presley's religious recordings--singles, EPs, albums, compilations- -have sold approximately 300 million copies in the US alone with "(There'll Be) Peace In The Valley (For Me)" and "Crying In The Chapel" each selling more than 20 million copies. Ten Elvis albums have hit #1 on the Billboard 200 while seven Elvis album titles have reached #1 on the Billboard Country chart. Produced by Joel Weinshanker, Lisa Marie Presley and Andy Childs, Elvis Presley - Where No One Stands Alone introduces newly-recorded instrumentation and backing vocal contributions from music legends who'd performed on-stage and/or in-the-studio with Elvis. It also includes a reimagined duet with Elvis and his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, on the album’s title track and spiritual touchstone. Background vocalists on the album include: Darlene Love (who first sang with Elvis on his 1968 NBC television special); Dr. Cissy Houston (who, with The Sweet Inspirations, sang with Elvis on-stage beginning in 1969); Terry Blackwood, Armond Morales and Jim Murray (members of The Imperials, who sang on Elvis' How Great Thou Art – with the title song winning the 1967 Grammy for Best Sacred Performance); and Donnie Sumner, Bill Baize, Ed Hill and Larry Strickland (members of Presley's longtime backup group, The Stamps). Elvis Presley - Where No One Stands Alone provides new musical perspectives on 14 of the singer's favorite pieces of gospel music, from the reverential to the celebratory, with song selections including Presley's beloved enduring gospel classics (the 1965 Top 5 smash "Crying In The Chapel," "How Great Thou Art," "You'll Never Walk Alone"), praise-filled gospel-rockers (Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller's "Saved") and traditional hymns and spirituals ("So High," "Stand By Me," "In The Garden," "Amazing Grace"). It is a classifcation of a broad range of harmonizing, country- tinged Christian music that originated in the southeastern part of the United States. Some Southern gospel is lovely and spiritual and seeks not to entertain the fesh but to edify the spirit. (Tere are also quartets that are not Southern gospel in style; an example is the Old Fashioned Revival Hour Quartet that was featured on Charles Fuller’s radio program.) We praise the Lord for all Christian music, Southern or otherwise, which doesn’t sound like the world, which has scriptural lyrics, which seeks solely to glorify Jesus Christ and edify the saints, and which is produced by faithful Christians.

  • Million Dollar Quartet” by Colin Escott & Floyd Mutrux at the Hippodrome Theatre Through December 2
“Million Dollar Quartet” By Colin Escott & Floyd Mutrux At the Hippodrome Theatre through December 2 By James Cooper MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS … PRODUCTION Flashing lights, shimmering jackets and long musical solos radiate through the production of “Million Dollar Quartet,” now at the Hippodrome Theatre. Though the special effects and costumes are beneficial in some instances, the show lacks emphasis in the one area it should stress the most: the music. The whole story focuses on the decisions of four major musicians from the 1950s: Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. Music is the main concept within the script, but it certainly isn’t the main concept within the performance. The show focuses on a single event: the night that all four musicians of the “Million Dollar Quartet” were present in the same space at the same time, the Sun Records Studio in Memphis on December 4, 1956. Elvis (Cody Slaughter) used to be a member of the Sun Records family but then he switched to RCA, a bigger label. Since this change, Elvis has lost contact with his former producer, Sam Phillips (Vince Nappo). As Elvis returns with his girlfriend Dyanne (Kelly Lamont) he makes it clear to Sam that he wishes he had stayed at Sun. Sam too wishes that Elvis had stayed, but his main focus is now on producing Johnny (David Elkins) and the up-and-coming Jerry Lee (Martin Kaye). All the while Carl (Robert Britton Lyons) has to decide whether or not he wants to leave Sun Records or move on to Columbia.

  • Tried and True- How Great Thou
1 Upper Path Valley Presbyterian Church November 17, 2019 Tried and True: How Great Thou Art Gary Rebok, UPVPC Commissioned Lay Pastor As we come to the conclusion of this sermon series “Tried and True,” we can often find that the foundation of our faith has roots in the generations that have come before us. Some of the hymns we sing have been born out of a tragedy that initiated a longing for God’s presence to comfort a loss or catastrophe. But as said before, these hymns have been tried theologically, bringing important biblical truths to our hearts, minds, and spirits that bring about memories leading to our faith. Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for those who have come before us to bring about the words of faith inspired by and through your Holy Spirit. We ask you, Father, to raise a new generation of Christians who will delight in the Word like King David, effective and fruitful in ministry so that the knowledge of You will spread to the generations we will never know. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of all our hearts dwell richly in us this day. Amen In choosing the hymn “How Great Thou Art,” I look back to my family tradition around the table and how the foundation of my faith has emerged from a previous generation. Shortly after being called into my first ministry position, my mother paid a visit to my office with a package. She said, I brought you something for your office wall, and as I unraveled the paper from it, I uncovered a picture, something for my wall, “she said,” a picture of a guitar and the words to “How Great Thou Art.” My mother knew a bit about the history behind the song and what a treasure it meant to the family’s spiritual foundation, eventually leading me to follow God’s calling.

  • Aint Gonna Study War No More / Down by the Riverside
The Danish Peace Academy 1 Holger Terp: Aint gonna study war no more Ain't gonna study war no more By Holger Terp American gospel, workers- and peace song. Author: Text: Unknown, after 1917. Music: John J. Nolan 1902. Alternative titles: “Ain' go'n' to study war no mo'”, “Ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more”, “Ain't Gwine to Study War No More”, “Down by de Ribberside”, “Down by the River”, “Down by the Riverside”, “Going to Pull My War-Clothes” and “Study war no more” A very old spiritual that was originally known as Study War No More. It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J. Nolan.3 1 http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/grovemusic/spirituals,_hymns,_gospel_songs.htm 2 Thanks to Ulf Sandberg, Sweden, for the Pete Seeger quote.
