Artist Profiles RAMA RAVI is one of the leading artists in the field of South Indian Classical Music. She received training at Kalakshetra under the guidance of renowned gurus like Mysore Vasudevacharya, Budalur Krishnamurthi Sastrigal, M.D. Ramanathan and T.K. Ramaswami Iyengar, and subsequently learnt from the late D.K. Jayaraman. She is a leading exponent of the Dhanam- mal School, having also learnt from T.Viswanathan the subtleties, nuances and modes of expression characteristic of this school. She has gained considerably from the guidance given by the late T. Brinda, T. Mukta and T. Sankaran. Rama was the Head of the Department of Music at S. R. College, Tiruchirappalli, for two years. She has performed exten- sively in Sangeet Sammelan recitals and on Doordarshan National Programs, and at prestigious organizations like the Chennai Music Academy and Sri Krishna Gana Sabha.

    l SRUTI August 2011 Sruti south indian classical music and dance monthly Issue 2 16 November 1983 It's with a sense of gratification at the warm reception given to the inaugural issue of SRUTI that we have prepared our second offering. The lead group of articles this time focusses on what has come to be called Tamil Isai. The principal article (p.4), researched and written by Anandhi Ramachandran, provides a retrospective analysis of the genesis and the controversial initial years of the Tamil Isai Movement, while a companion piece (p.8) by her offers a balance sheet of sorts on Tamil Isai Sangam, the institution set up to implement the movement's goals. The hymns composed by Tamil saints, known as Tevaram, form an important part of the musical heritage of the Tamils and a report on the interview conducted by Muthumeenakshi with an official of the Dharmapuram Adheenam Mutt throws considerable light on the hoary tradition of hymn- singing (p. 12). Rounding out the group is a Sruti Report (p. 11) on what prominent musicians have to say on Tamil compositions and what our chief has to say on whether the proponents of Tamil Isai and their opponents have served the listening public. The latter's analysis is presented in the first edition of an opinion column on music, which we call Bull's Eye. (p. 15); it will be a more or less regular feature. A companion column on dance is also envisaged. Giants have trodden the Carnatic earth, offering music sublime. We have plans to publish special articles about them from time to time.

    PROFITE OF THE AWARDEES Sri S.V. Ramakrishnan Sri 5.V. Ramakrishnan or SVR, born on August 23, 1930 to a musicatly inctined Parents, has had a deep love for Carnatic Music since chitdhood. His Mother Smt. Kaveri, was musicalty gifted with a sweet voice and a wide repertoire of songs in Tetugu. lt was through her and his musicalty gifted sister Hemavathi, who [earnt from Mudicondan Sri Venkataramana lyer that SVR devetoped a tove for c[assical music. SVR since his school days was inctined to singing and acting popular musical ptays of that years. After his studies SVR joined in the Reserve Bank of lndia in 1953. During his official assignment, where he was posted at various cities in lndia, he pursued his ardent love for Carnatic Music by becoming member of leading sabhas and attending as many concerts. He has heard atl great musicians of the gotden era of Carnatic Music, by which SVR gained knowtedge in music to be abte to appreciate atI the nuances of it. He retired as DGM from NABARD in 1988, and settted in Nanganallur in 1995 where he soon got invo[ved in cuttural activities. Even after retirement, SVR's thrust to music had resutted in formation of the sabha Sri Krishna Fine Arts Society in 1999, which was inaugurated by Sangeeta Katanidhi, Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa lyer. After serving as the society's treasurer for many years, SVR has been its secretary for the past '10 years. The society has been hotding monthty concerts without a break for these past 19 years apart from Sri Krishna Jayanthi festivat for 5 days and a competition for school chitdren in Carnatic vocal music at two levets which has gained poputarity over the years.

S. Ramaswami Sastry perfectly describes his personality. His profound knowledge of literature, music and administrative intelligence made him popular all over the country. His fame was not limited to the region of Travancore. He filled art music with sacredness and sacred music with art. During his reign the royal court seemed like a festival everyday and the artists too performed with great dedication and humility. To perform and be with the Maharaja was a blessing for them. But as it is observed always, change is the only constant in this material world and each and every one has to accept it. Here the Maharaja was busy in his court routines; unpleasant waves began to enter the doors of Travancore Royal Fort. It all began with the entry of Krishna Row, a Telugu Brahmin who was a close associate of General Cullen the then resident of Travancore in 1840. Krishna Row was interested in a government job but Travancore that time didn’t have any vacancy or requirement for a post. But simply to please the general as he had a friendly bond with him The Maharaja went out of his way and created a new post of a Dewan Peischar in the huzur office and appointed Krishna Row on a monthly salary of Rs. 300/- which was very handsome indeed by the -------------------------------- ( 230 ) ---------------------------------- then standards.
