In Serbia there are a couple of editors that are publishing e-books and the increase of digital libraries that provide access to e-books is also notable. E-books can be read on computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones, but e-book readers are the most suitable for longer reading. Easy access, availability 24 hours a day, efficiency in terms of cost and space and other advantages of e-books have contributed to the increase of the reading public.     Searching for a Lost Identity: Serbian Librarianship at the Beginning of the Twenty-first Century Gordana Stokić Simončić and Željko Vučković Abstract There are three related aspects of the problem of identity that beset Serbian librarianship after 1991: 1) identity as survival during the war crisis and subsequent sanctions; 2) identity as change during the time of a global information and communication revolution; and 3) identity as self-awareness during a time of change in status, social responsibility, and professionalism for library personnel. Judging by the difference in the conditions under which libraries operated in Serbia during the 1990s and 2000s, the two decades can be character- ized as the antipodes of each other. At the same time, they are also two sides of the same whole, in that the old system of librarianship collapsed and has not yet been replaced with a new one. This paper offers a survey of the situation in Serbia through an analysis of the present state of the difficulties currently besetting the various activi- ties of Serbian libraries: automation, digitization, communication, scientific research, and continuing education. The need to develop a new discourse on librarianship in Serbia is crucial so that librarians may have a voice in the processes of formal and public education and the acceleration of economic, scientific, and cultural growth in Serbia. Introduction The phenomenon of identity manifests itself at the levels of the individ- ual, family, and group, and these correspond to identities that are also created by occupational, cultural, and national values and qualities. Introduction Ukrainian-Serbian cultural relations have a long-standing tradition, their roots reaching times long gone; however, direct literary contacts have developed in the most active way during the last three centuries.     IN THE SHADOW OF GAS AND POLITICS: CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL CONTACTS, CONNECTIONS AND COOPERATION BETWEEN SERBIA AND RUSSIA Miroslav Jovanović, PhD∗ When we speak today about both present and past Serbian-Russian relations, we usually give priority to politics. However, the history of mutual relations shows that other connections were equally important, such as cultural, artistic, spiritual, religious and ecclesiastical ties between these two peoples (we could also include scientific connections, but it would require too much specific detail in a general overview such as this). It is possible to trace these connections back to the middle ages and the first contacts of the Serbian ruler Stefan Nemanja with Russian monks. One popular example that is often mentioned is the encounter of his son Rastko Nemanjić (St. Sava) with a Russian monk from Mount Athos, who helped him to hide from his father’s men in the Russian monastery of St. Panteleimon and later to become a monk himself. We should also mention the almost forgotten Serbian Monk Lazarus, who designed the first clock in the Kremlin at the beginning of XV century. The first influences of South Slavs on Russian culture and literature date from the XV century. Russian material and cultural contributions to the Serbian Church and its monasteries were initiated at the beginning of the XVI century. These contributions were brought back by various Serbian monks and priests during numerous visits to Russia up until the end of the XVIII century. During the XIX century, contributions from the Russian Tsars for cultural and educational needs were most important to the Serbs under the Habsburg Empire.

Careful consideration is given to the library collections of Peć Monastery - the historic residence of Serbian Patriarchs, Veliki Dečani Monastey and Gračanica Monastery; the Library of Serbian Orthodox Theological College Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Prizren, temporarily in Niš; and the National and University Library ″Ivo Andrić’’, presently in Belgrade. 1 Kosovo and Metochia covers the surface of 10,849 km2, or approximately 12% of Serbian territory. According to the results of the regular republic census in 1991, Kosovo and Metochia had 1,956,196 inhabitants: Albanians made up 82,2% of the province’s population, whereas among the other 23 nationalities and ethnic groups most were the Serbs, Muslims, Roma, Montenegrins, Turks and Croats. According to UNMIK’s1 approximate 2002 demographic estimate, Kosovo and Metochia has between 1,7 and 1,9 million inhabitants: 88% Albanians, 6% Serbs, 3% Slavic Muslims (Gorani, Bosniacs, etc.), 2% Roma and 1% Turks. The Serbs who now live in Kosovo and Metochia, as well as the Serbian Government, operate with the number ranging between 115,000 and 124,000 Serbian inhabitants of KiM, but also with the number from 215,000 to 255,000 persons of Serbian nationality temporarily displaced from Kosovo and Metochia.

The most substantial cultural capital of the movement relates to “Zabranjeno pušenje” (“No Smoking”) band and the radio and television show Top lista nadrealista (Top List of Surrealists), while the biggest individual cultural capital lies with Nenad Janković, a phony doctor with the “erotic” pseudonym of Dr. Nele Karajlić. The subject matter of this article is the authorship and co-authorship of Dr. Nele Karajlić within the “No Smoking” band and the television show Top List of Surrealists in the cultural space of the socialist Yugoslavia during the 1980s. Key words: Dr. Nele Karajlić, “New Primitivеs,” “No Smoking Orchestra” band, Top List of Surrealists “New Primitivism” was one of the most significant youth alternative movements in Yugoslavia during the 1980s, notable for their attempts of “creating an authentic rock culture” (Dragićević-Šešić 1992: 173). The author explores the basic forms of presentation of this work, including the news and educational Web sites, giving adresses of web pages dedicated to Srpski rječnik, with a brief overview of the importance of this book, which many researchers consider one of the most important in the history of Serbian literature, as well as the main features of electronic lexicography and electronic publishing. The paper explores the possibilities that the internet and new technologies offer in terms of presenting, preserving and nurturing of our tradition and culture. Concrete examples show how to use, in a creative and interesting way, the internet as a platform for exchange and learning.
