The Philadelphia Eagles joined the league concurrently with the Steelers in The team was founded The Stealers War Arthur J. The Rooney family has held a controlling interest in the club for almost The Stealers War entire history. Since its founding the team has captured six league championships and competed in more than a thousand games. Eighteen Steelers players, coaches or administrators have been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Art Rooneywho was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area, was an exceptional all-around athlete. This included the Hope-Harvey Football Cluba semi-professional American football team which he founded as a teenager. It grew from that", Rooney said. Harvey, a local physician, who was a sponsor and unofficial team doctor. In addition to being the team's manager and coach, Art Rooney at times played quarterback for the team, which also included his younger brothers, Dan and Jim. The Hope-Harvey club, which would later come to be known as "Majestic Radio" when they gained a sponsor and later the "James P. Rooneys" to promote the state legislative campaign of the team's quarterback, and Art Rooney's brother, Jimmy Rooney[8] played most of their home games at Exposition Park The Stealers War Pittsburgh. Although football was popular in Pittsburgh at the time, the city had no fully professional teams The Stealers War to Pennsylvania's puritanical blue lawswhich prohibited athletic The Stealers War on Sundays because it was the Sabbath. In May The Stealers War, in anticipation of the repeal of some of Pennsylvania's restrictive laws in the fall of that year, Rooney applied for a franchise with the NFL. Before settling on Forbes, Rooney considered playing The Stealers War Greenlee Fieldwhich housed the city's Negro League baseball club. Rooney's new team was a study in frustration for many years. Between andthey posted a winning The Stealers War only eight times, and made the playoffs just once, inwhen The Stealers War were shut out by Philadelphia. In the early years of the franchise, the Pirates were not Rooney's only or even his primary focus. Even the office off the lobby of the Fort Pitt Hotel from which he ran the team was shared with the Rooney-McGinley Boxing Club, which promoted fights. However, this is becoming an urban legend with the The Stealers War trying to clear their name of such shady early beginnings. In an era when the outright collapse of professional sports teams even at the major league level was not an uncommon occurrence, what can safely be said is that Rooney's gambling winnings did help keep his football franchise afloat, [8] because while Rooney fared well off the field, the Pirates struggled The Stealers War it. Rooney said of those lean years, "In those days, nobody got wealthy in sports. You had two thrills. One came Sunday, trying to The Stealers War the game. The next came Monday, trying to make the payroll. Although he strove to field a winning The Stealers War, Rooney spent a good deal of energy simply trying to keep the franchise in business through its early seasons. InRooney proposed a restriction on the number of players that could be signed by teams that finished at the top of the league. The Pirates' first uniforms were gold with black stripes and were adorned with the city crest. This color scheme was inspired by Pittsburgh's city flag. Rooney hired Forrest "Jap" The Stealers War as player-coach. Our team looks terrible. The fans didn't get their money's worth. The Pittsburgh Pirates notched their first victory a week later, defeating the Chicago Cardinals [23] 14—13, in front of about 5, fans. The other hero that day was Mose Kelschwho at 36 years of age was the oldest player in the NFL — four years older even than team owner Rooney. Kelsch, a holdover from the sandlot Majestics, kicked the extra point that was the margin of victory. In their sixth game the Pirates The Stealers War an NFL record the franchise still shares by combining with the Cincinnati Reds to punt 31 times in a scoreless tie. The Bears and Packers matched the mark in a game played on the same day, but it has never been surpassed since. The total attendance for The Stealers War five home games in the inaugural season The Stealers War around 57, To put that number The Stealers War perspective, that year's Pitt-Duquesne college matchup was watched by around 60, fans. Rooney pursued Hunk Andersonwho had recently stepped down as head coach at Notre Dameto replace Douds. Luby DiMeoloThe Stealers War had been rumored as the leading candidate for the Pirates coaching job prior to the team's first season, [33] was eventually hired to replace Douds. The Stealers War had been captain of the Pittsburgh Panthers football team on which Jimmy Rooney also starred. DiMeolo hired Jimmy Rooney as an assistant. Rooney attempted to lure football legend Red Grangewho had just retired as a player, to coach the team the following year. In Bach's first season the team improved on the previous years two wins, but they still were The Stealers War very competitive at 4—8. The Pirates saw little initial return, however, as the team's first draft pickWilliam Shakespearewould never play in the NFL. In his second season with the Pirates inBach had his team in contention for the NFL's Eastern Division title with a 6—3 record through nine games.

  • The Application and Impact of Numerical Models for Decision-Making in Sports
ESD. 864 Modeling and Assessment for Policy The Application and Impact of Numerical Models for Decision-Making in Sports Jordan James Foley, Roi Guinto, Nicola Ricci, Marcus Wu Shihong Technology and Policy Program, Engineering Systems Division Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, 02139 This paper describes the viability and impact of statistical information and numerical models for decision-making in professional sports with regards to performance assessment and team management. Sports statistics may have established winning formulas and transformed the face of modern sports, but they do not always take precedence in determining decision outcomes. A case study in American football is used, where the decision to keep, cut, or trade renowned quarterback Ben Roethlisberger by the Pittsburgh Steelers was not only influenced by his stellar performances and team contributions, but also by external pressures and his off-field behavior. I. Introduction The advent of sports statistics is fast changing the way professional sports are being played in the era of free information and cutting-edge computation. Beginning with sports enthusiasts and fantasy league players who gather and analyze information to predict results, sports statistics have rapidly evolved in recent years with the development of various tools, techniques and metrics to better measure both player and team performance. The usage of such quantitative methods, instead of reliance on qualitative human expertise and intuition, has greatly transformed team management and strategy development in modern-day sports. Early adopters such as baseball’s Oakland Athletics, basketball’s Seattle Supersonics and soccer’s AC Milan1 have leveraged statistical analysis to calculate their way towards success.
