Nydicka and Howard J. Weissb aVillanova University, Villanova, PA, USA bTemple University Abstract. Twenty-eight years ago Golden and Wasil (1987) presented the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for ranking outstanding sports records. Since then much has changed with respect to sports and sports records, the application and theory of the AHP, and the availability of the internet for accessing data. In this paper we revisit the ranking of outstanding sports records and build on past work, focusing on a comprehensive set of records from the four major American professional sports. We interviewed and corresponded with two sports experts and applied an AHP-based approach that features both the traditional pairwise comparison and the AHP rating method to elicit the necessary judgments from these experts. The most outstanding sports records are presented, discussed and compared to Golden and Wasil’s results from a quarter century earlier. Whether he is run blocking or pass blocking, he shows good hand placement. He missed many games in 1961 and 1964 due to injury. Also kicked field goals and extra points for the team in 1962-63 and 1968. He led the league in field goal percentage in 1962. Run Blocking: When pulling, he is quick to get into position and gains proper leverage against the defender. While staying on the line to run block, he shows excellent explosion into the defender and can turn the defender away from the runner. Pass Blocking: He can get pushed a little far into the backfield and lose his balance. He also has a habit of not playing snap-to-whistle.

Praise for Touchdown! “Just as one individual makes a diff erence, so can one book make a diff erence. If you follow what it teaches, you will be in a much higher place and get what you deserve, which is victory.” Butch Davis, former Head Coach of the NCAA Champion University of Miami and current Head Coach of the University of North Carolina “Kevin Elko played a huge part of putt ing Rutgers Football on the map. We use what he has taught us every day in our coaching. We owe him for teaching us ‘Th e Chop.’” Greg Schiano, Head Coach, Rutgers University Football “Dr. Elko taught me ‘You have to dream it to achieve it’ and that before championships and pro bowls happen, they have already occurred in your mind. From the moment I learned it I have not only played that way, I have led that way.” Ed Reed, All Pro Safety, Baltimore Ravens “Over my career at the University of Miami, I learned a lot of lessons from Kevin that helped lift myself and my teammates to a higher level. His creativity with his teachings, and the fact that what he taught us worked, was a major reason I still believe in what he taught me to this day.” Ken Dorsey, Quarterback, Cleveland Browns, and former Quarterback of 2001 University of Miami National Champions “Over the course of my career, the principles that Dr. Elko taught were instrumental in me being a starter in the NFL. Th ese principles are now still what I teach to my athletes in the weight room.” Tom Myslinski, MS, CSCS, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, the Cleveland Browns Football Club “If I had one choice for someone to work with my fi rm, I would pick Kevin Elko.

• Seton Hall Sports Poll PUBLIC SAYS OBAMA a BETTER SPORTSMAN
Seton Hall Sports Poll PUBLIC SAYS OBAMA A BETTER SPORTSMAN, WOULD BE A BETTER FOOTBALL COACH THAN ROMNEY Independent Voters Also Favor President on Both Questions S. Orange, NJ, September 28, 2012 – President Obama is seen as showing better sportsmanship than his opponent Mitt Romney, according to a poll conducted this week by the Seton Hall Sports Poll. Asked “regardless of whom you support, which candidate do you think shows better sportsmanship,” 53% said Obama, 29% said Romney, and 18% had no opinion. And while partisan politics may have affected that reading, the results from respondents who identified themselves as independent may be more telling: 58% said Obama showed better sportsmanship, 28% Romney, and 14% had no opinion. The poll was conducted among 688 randomly selected people across the country, including people on cell phones, of whom 487 said they followed sports at least somewhat. The poll has a margin of error of 3.8%; 4.5% for sports fans. The poll also found that to the question “which candidate do you think would make a better football coach,” Obama drew 48% to Romney’s 30%, and a wider margin among independents, 52% - 31%. Asked which party has more of the “win at all costs” attitude commonly associated with sports, 43% said Republicans, 36% Democrats, and among independents it was 48% to 38% for the Republicans. (The margin of error for independent voters was 5.9%). “One might expect partisan responses to these questions, so the results among independents is especially telling,” noted Rick Gentile, director of the poll, which is conducted by the Sharkey Institute.

Big 12 Conference Schools Raise Nine-Year NFL Draft Totals to 277 Alumni Through 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Apr. 26, 2003 DALLAS—Big 12 Conference teams had 10 of the first 62 selections in the 35th annual NFL “common” draft (67th overall) Saturday and added a total of 13 for the opening day. The first-day tallies in the 2003 NFL draft brought the number Big 12 standouts taken from 1995-03 to 277. Over 90 Big 12 alumni signed free agent contracts after the 2000-02 drafts, and three of the first 13 standouts (six total in the first round) in the 2003 draft were Kansas State CB Terence Newman (fifth draftee), Oklahoma State DE Kevin Williams (ninth) Texas A&M DT Ty Warren (13th). Last year three Big 12 standouts were selected in the top eight choices (four of the initial 21), and the 2000 draft included three alumni from this conference in the first 20. Colorado, Nebraska and Florida State paced all schools nationally in the 1995-97 era with 21 NFL draft choices apiece. Eleven Big 12 schools also had at least one youngster chosen in the eight-round draft during 1998. Over the last six (1998-03) NFL postings, there were 73 Big 12 Conference selections among the Top 100. There were 217 Big 12 schools’ grid representatives on 2002 NFL opening day rosters from all 12 members after 297 standouts from league members in ’02 entered NFL training camps—both all-time highs for the league. Nebraska (35 alumni) was third among all Division I-A schools in 2002 opening day roster men in the highest professional football configuration while Texas A&M (30) was among the Top Six in total NFL alumni last autumn.

  • Kapp-Ing a Memorable Campaign
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol 19, No. 1 (1997) Kapp-ing A Memorable Campaign `Injun' Joe Kapp spirited the '69 Vikings to an NFL championship By Ed Gruver He was called "Injun" Joe, despite the fact his heritage was a mix of Mexican and German blood, and he quarterbacked an NFL championship team, despite owning a passing arm that produced more wounded ducks than his hunter-head coach, Bud Grant, who spent pre-dawn hours squatting with a rifle in a Minneapolis duck blind. But in 1969, a season that remains memorable in the minds of Minnesota football fans, "Injun" Joe Kapp blazed a trail through the National Football League and bonded the Vikings into a formidable league champion, a family of men whose slogan, "Forty for Sixty," was testament to their togetherness. "I liked Joe," Grant said once. "Everybody liked Joe, he's a likeable guy. In this business, you play the people who get the job done, and Joe did that." John Beasley, who played tight end on the Vikings' '69 team, called Kapp "a piece of work...big and loud and fearless." Even the Viking defense rallied behind Kapp, an occurrence not so common on NFL teams, where offensive and defensive players are sometimes at odds with another. Witness the New York Giants teams of the late 1950s and early 1960s, where middle linebacker Sam Huff would tell halfback Frank Gifford, "Hold 'em Frank, and we'll score for you." No such situation occurred on the '69 Vikings, a fact made clear by Minnesota safety Dale Hackbart. "Playing with Kapp was like playing in the sandlot," Hackbart said.

It was the third consecutive year these two teams would decide the championship. The Browns had lost three consecutive championship games, including the last two to the Lions. Browns QB Otto Graham had not played particulary well in those three losses, and since he was the “trigger” man in the Cleveland offense, and a man of intense pride, this was the “crossroads” game of his career. Graham responded to the challenge by contributing five touchdowns in a 56 to 10 victory. Otto completed 9 of 12 passes for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns, and scored 3 himself on short runs from scrimmage. Though he announced his retirement, Otto eventually returned for one final season in 1955. Graham again led the Browns to the title, this time defeating the Rams in the Los Angeles Coliseum 38 to 14. When assessing a quarterback’s career how much emphasis should be placed on his passing statistics? Long after Otto Graham retired, the NFL began to use the passer rating system to evaluate the passing efficiency of each individual quarterback. Using that system how efficient was Graham, and where does he rank in comparison with other champion quarterbacks? The passer rating system is divided into four equal categories; completion percentage per pass attempt, yards gained per pass attempt, touchdown percentage per pass attempt, and interception percentage per pass attempt. Is there a simpler way of stating this? We want our team to complete as many long passes for as many touchdowns as possible in as few attempts as possible, without throwing an interception.
