PERFORMANCE TASK : Artificial Real Estate Agent

BIG IDEA:

A technological world requires that humans develop capabilities to solve technological challenges and improve products for the way we live. Numbers, measures, expressions, equations, and inequalities can represent mathematical situations and structures in many equivalent forms. Some questions can be answered by collecting, representing, and analyzing data, and the question to be answered determines the data to be collected, how best to collect it, and how best to represent it.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

How would you apply technological design and problem-solving methods in the development of inventions and innovations? How can we use mathematical situations to help solve real world problems? How can you choose a scale for your data so that the data best represents a given situation?

OVERVIEW:

A middle eastern country is very interested in creating its own artificial palm island to increase real estate near the water and to enhance its tourism industry.

GOAL:

Your goal is to develop a sales strategy based upon your understanding of artificial island development and then plot waterfront lots of different sizes to sell to customers. The different sizes will be important as the larger the plot of land, the more money it will cost the consumer.

ROLE:

You are a member of a prestigious real estate firm in the Middle East. You have been asked to develop a sales plan for another Middle Eastern country planning to replicate the Palm in . You will want to present plots of land along the water with a variety of different sizes.

AUDIENCE:

Your audience is the members of the Government Commission on Growth and Tourism. They are interested in developing the island for homes and along the water. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the artificial island development process and how the artificial island can be developed based upon different sized plots of land for hotels and people.

SITUATION:

A middle eastern country is very interested in creating its own artificial palm island to increase real estate near the water and to enhance its tourism industry.

Please use the dimensions provided on the following website related to . The artificial island being created will be an exact match of Palm Jumeirah. Please use the scale key provided in the drawing.

Fronds A through J in the diagram will be used for homes, and the plots will be different sizes with the average size for homes along the water's edge (area of plot: 13, 400 sq. ft.). Fronds H & I will be for resorts and should be broken up so that each of the

Once you have designed your resort you will need to advertise the plots of land that your company plans to sell. This advertisement should show the prospective buyer the different sized lots available. It should also highlight the different businesses and services that will be available on the island for residents. Lastly there should be information about the construction of the islands and safety precautions that have been put in place that ensure they won't sink back into the ocean.

Drawing (Mathematical Representation)

Your task is to create an artificial island resort. Your island will be created in a bay where the average depth of the water is five meters. Step one will be to determine the shape and size of the island you plan to create. Then you must use mathematics to figure out the volume of and rock that will be needed to create an island of that size (in meters cubed). Remember that your sand and rock must rise five meters above sea level. Once you have constructed the island then it is time to design the resort. Again you will want to use mathematics to figure out how to divide the land into plots where similar sized buildings can be constructed. Remember to add roads, restaurants, and places where stores and other businesses can be built for island residents.

Environmental Impact Study

Your task is to research the environmental impact that has resulted from the creation of the in Dubai. Some questions to consider answering are as follows: How has the movement of such large quantities of sand affected the waters and wildlife along Dubai's coast? What plans are in place to protect the islands in the event that global warming causes a rise in sea level? How has the presence of the artificial island changed the natural coastline of Dubai?

Multimedia Presentation

Create a presentation that uses images from the construction and development of the Palm Islands in Dubai. Your presentation should help the audience understand what it will take to create a similar artificial island. Make sure to include information on how the sand and stone for the island was put into place. Also include as many technical details as you can find regarding measures that have been taken to make sure that the island stays in place!

Oral Presentation

Your task is to create an oral presentation that explains why the shape of a palm tree was used to create the Palm Islands. Explain both the cultural and mathematical reasons for the chosen shape in your presentation. During your discussion you should indicate how many pieces of land are beachfront and provide mathematical support to help entice the audience.
