La UMA tiene el objetivo de manejar especies de cactáceas con riesgo de extinción y regular la recolecta de orégano (Lippia graveolens) y damiana (Turnera diffusa) como estrategia de conservación y aprovechamiento de la biodiversidad. Las UMA son un instrumento que permite la protección de especies con alguna categoría de riesgo de extinción en la Norma Oficial Mexicana NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 y su hábitat, al tiempo que brinda la posibilidad de llevar a cabo aprovechamientos racionales y sustentables, lo anterior bajo un plan de manejo integral. Se generó información de las características socioeconómicas y biofísicas de la microcuenca, se implementaron talleres participativos, entrevistas semiestructuradas y muestreos de la vegetación. De cuatro comunidades que están ubicadas en la microcuenca, sólo tres poseen grupos focales dispuestos a participar, sin embargo, sólo un grupo focal reúne los requisitos para el registro de la UMA; la principal limitante fue la posesión legal de predios. A partir de lo anterior, se elaboró el plan de manejo para una UMA, la cual ocupará un área de 318 hectáreas en las que se llevarán a cabo acciones para la conservación y manejo de la biznaga tonel (Echinocactus platyacanthus), cactus estrella (Astrophytum ornatum), biznaga de areola dorada (Mammillaria parkinsonii), biznaga trompo (Strombocactus disciformis) y el peyote queretano (Lophophora diffusa). Dicho plan de manejo consideró el enfoque por cuenca, donde se tomó en cuenta la participación comunitaria para el análisis y planificación, con la finalidad que pueda funcionar como instrumento para conservar la flora nativa y ayude a disminuir los efectos acumulativos que ocurren en las diferentes zonas funcionales de la UMA y la microcuenca. Las poblaciones de esta especie son mermadas por el saqueo directo de individuos debido a sus supuestas propiedades químicas y curativas. Además, los sitios en donde habita están sujetos a transformaciones constantes por cambios de uso del suelo. La especie es señalada como amenazada (A) en la NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, como vulnerable (Vu) en la Lista Roja de la UICN y está incluida en el Apéndice ll de CITES. Sin embargo, la asignación de estas categorías ha sido un tanto subjetiva debido a la carencia de información sobre muchos aspectos de la biología de la especie. En este trabajo se aplicó el Método de Evaluación del Riesgo de Extinción de las Especies Silvestres en México (MER) (Anexo I de la NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010) con el fin de justificar la re-categorización deL. diffusa como especie en peligro de extinción (P). I felt intoxicated, and for a short time particularly lost consciousness. —John Briggs, May 1887 Peyote was well known in Ignacio Sendejas’s world, used within a vari- ety of Indian communities from west-central Mexico into what is today the southwestern United States as a sacrament, and used by curers and botanists in the borderlands for any variety of ailments. Outside of the borderlands, however, Euro-Americans had scant knowledge of the cac- tus. The doctors and scientists in Mexico City who were then endeavor- ing to create a modern state had little interest in things tainted by indi- geneity, and most could not have identifi ed peyote or discussed its properties in any detail. Beyond Mexico the classifi catory challenges were even greater, in part because the name peyote had long been asso- ciated with at least three diff erent plants. Early in the colonial period, Bernardino de Sahagún classifi ed two plants as peyote, one identifi ed with Xochimilco and the other with Zacatecas. Decades later Francisco Hernández coined the scientifi c term peyotl zacatensis to describe the cactus that we know today as peyote. Later still, when nineteenth-cen- tury North American and European botanists began to classify the myr- iad cacti found in Mexico, they identifi ed no less than four species of cactus that went by the name peyote.

A Uitewaal (1899 −1963), was published for IOS by the National Cactus & Succulent Society,and the next four (with Gordon RowleyasAssociate and later Joint Editor) by Roan’snewly formed British Section of the IOS. Contiene más de 55 alcaloides aislados hasta la fecha, siendo la mescalina el componente principal y responsable de las alucinaciones que provoca. A lo largo de la historia ha sido utilizada en ceremonias religiosas, para alcanzar experiencias místicas, y para curar enfermedades. Por estas razones ha sido considerada por algunas culturas como una planta divina. En la actualidad su uso es controvertido. En numerosos países su consumo está prohibido, al ser considerado una droga de abuso, en otros su empleo solo está permitido en ceremonias religiosas y ritos tradicionales. Asimismo, algunas de las moléculas que produce esta planta tienen interés desde el punto de vista farmacológico. Existe, además, un importante mercado negro ligado a las ventas de productos de plantas de esta especie a causa de sus propiedades alucinógenas y también terapéuticas. Como consecuencia de dicha demanda y de la excesiva recolección, esta especie está catalogada como especie en riesgo de extinción.
