The Weekly Notes Online: a resource for use while the building is closed www.llandaffcathedral.org.uk

The First Sunday after Trinity – 14th June 2020

Welcome to The Weekly Notes Online. These Notes are produced each week during this period of ‘lockdown’. The Cathedral Office is closed and the office and lay staff have all been furloughed. As a clergy team we are following the instructions of the Government and the and are working in as full a way as possible under the current circumstances and within the current restrictions.

As a Cathedral community our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are suffering as a consequence of the covid-19 pandemic. We remember those who are suffering from the virus; we give thanks and praise to God for all who care for them, especially healthcare professionals and all who maintain our hospitals and the National Health Service. We pray too for those who have died and for those who have been bereaved. May the healing mercies of our risen Lord Jesus surround them all.

The Collect and Readings for today O God, the strength of all those who put their trust in you, mercifully accept our prayers and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you, grant us the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

A reading from the book of Exodus. The Israelites had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain.

Then Moses went up to God; the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, ‘Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the Israelites: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.’

So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. The people all answered as one: ‘Everything that the LORD has spoken we will do.’ Exodus 19.2–8a

Psalm 100 - We are the people and the sheep of his pasture. Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know this: The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and call upon his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

A reading from letter of St Paul to the Romans. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person – though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Romans 5:1-8

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Matthew Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’ Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Matthew 9:35 – 10:8

Prayers of Intercession As we come before God in prayer, we give thanks for all the good things in our lives, and that we can share any situations that trouble us, and pray for people in any kind of need.

We give thanks for the Church throughout the world. May disciples today seek to prove God’s love by sharing the good news with others.

We give thanks for all who promote peace and justice. May those who flee dangerous places to seek the promise of safety be treated with compassion and respect.

We give thanks for all who work to help others. May those who suffer in body, mind or spirit be comforted by knowing that God is near them.

We give thanks for those closest to us. May we reach out to those who are different from us in any way.

We give thanks for the promise of eternal life and remember those we love who now rest in peace.

God of heaven and earth, we thank you for hearing our prayers, which we offer in the power of your Spirit and in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

A form of intercession for this time of global pandemic: Let us pray to God, who is our refuge and stronghold and who alone makes us dwell in safety:

For all who are affected by coronavirus, through illness or isolation or anxiety, that they may find relief and recovery and that we may be alert to their needs, and care for them in their vulnerability Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For those who are guiding our nation at this time, and shaping national policies, that they may make wise decisions: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For doctors, nurses and medical researchers, that through their skill and insights many will be restored to health: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

For the vulnerable and the fearful, for the gravely ill and the dying, that they may know your comfort and peace: Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

We commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Some Cathedral News…….

The latest update from our Virtual Charities Table The real Charities Table at the back of the Cathedral remains inaccessible, but we can still keep in touch with the charities which the Cathedral supports. This week, we highlight the Christian charity Embrace the Middle East (formerly Biblelands) which works to tackle poverty and injustice in the lands which Jesus would have known.

In a recent blog, Bishop Mouneer (previously Director of an Embrace-funded hospital in Egypt and now the Episcopal Bishop in Jerusalem) has said that "The best thing about the partnership with Embrace is that it has been a longstanding journey, not a short one-off friendship". Coronavirus has increased both the need for help

and the difficulty of delivering it in poor countries which are especially vulnerable to the disease. Nonetheless, an Embrace volunteer living in Jerusalem reports that work goes on throughout the Middle East to support people in desperate need. For example in Gaza, where life has been in social and economic lockdown since 2007, and where underlying medical conditions, especially respiratory disease, are widespread, the Al Ahli hospital, which is supported by Embrace, has issued an urgent call for additional help. In Bethlehem, which is under occupation in "normal" times and now under lockdown for 12 weeks, the additional restrictions have meant that people have been unable to obtain even the most basic items. Embrace's partners have been distributing leaflets for the community with emergency numbers and instructions to alleviate some of the difficulties encountered by so many in the City. In East Jerusalem, there are no temporary test stations, the pharmacies have run out of hand sanitiser, and PPE is in short supply. Christian organisations, including Embrace partners, are working with the Muslim community to help in whatever way they can, including collecting donations of food and equipment for those most in need.

The Cathedral's support for Embrace has been extremely generous in the past, but these are difficult times for us all, with economic uncertainty for so many. However, if you are able to continue to help, you can do so easily by donating via Embrace's excellent website: www.embraceme.org. , where you can also find details of all its work. Anything you can give would be hugely appreciated. Thank you so much for enabling Embrace to continue to support people in the "Bible Lands" in these strange and challenging times. David & Sue Smith

The Fairtrade Shop in Canton – Fair Do’s We have had a message from Jan, the Manager of the Fair Do's shop in Canton to let us know that the shop is open to customers again, but only on Fridays at the moment. Jan asks for our prayers at this difficult time for the shop, that there may continue to be a fair trade presence in Cardiff, and an outlet for suppliers from overseas, who need help as much as ever. The shop is on Llandaff Road in Canton.

Llandaff Cathedral online Several dozen people have now signed up to our ‘subscription list’ to receive our new e-newsletter ‘directly to your inbox’! We plan to change the method of ‘posting’ these Notes, so they become available through the direct mailing list rather than through other groups. So don’t risk losing out…..! to sign up for our mailing list then please click here.

While our weekly services and daily thoughts for the day continue, we are planning to strengthen our presence online and on social media over the coming weeks and months. We are now looking afresh at the design of the website and increasing our presence on social media. Aware of the fact that when accessing the website on mobile phones it is not easy to navigate we will be looking at ways to improve the overall look of the website.

Cathedral 900 Celebrations The 900th celebrations planning group meets (virtually of course!) on Wednesday this week. The group has proposed, with the support of the Cathedral Chapter, to ‘translate’ as many of the planned events as possible into the 2021 diary on similar dates. We can continue to look forward to a year of celebration and wonder what our successors will think at the 1000th anniversary when they look back and see that most of our 900th celebrations happened a year later than they should have!

Foodbank news St Teilo’s High School is operating a foodbank from its premises, but you don’t need to travel to the school to deliver food. The school chaplain lives in Llandaff and is willing for food to be left at his address: 12 Fairwater Grove West Llandaff CF5 2JQ. He takes them to school every Wednesday.

Praying in ‘lockdown’ On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Canon Mark and Canon Jan meet by video link to say Morning Prayer together at 9.00 am and Evening Prayer together at 5.30 pm. During these times of prayer, they remember all those on the weekly cycles of prayer as contained in these Notes. They also pray for you – members of the Cathedral community. If you would like them to pray for anyone or anything in particular please send them your requests for prayer.

Giving during ‘lockdown’ You can now give to the Cathedral ‘online’ through the following link:

www.easydonate.org/LLANDAFF or you can give by text*: • to donate £5, text LLANDAFF to 70970 • to donate £10, text LLANDAFF to 70191

* Fundraising, payments and donations will be processed and administered by the National Funding Scheme (Charity No: 1149800), operating as DONATE. Texts will be charged at your standard network rate. For Terms & Conditions, see www.easydonate.org

We are delighted to report, that in the first ten days of this scheme being active we have received donations which (including Gift Aid) amounting to just over £1000. Thank you very much indeed to everyone who has given to the Cathedral recently. We have been touched by some of the messages we have received with the donations. We continue to be grateful to all who give through the Gift Direct scheme. This is hugely appreciated. You can also join the Church in Wales Gift Direct scheme through an online form: you can find the details here.

At this time of course, we are losing the income we would normally receive in the collection plate on a Sunday so it would help us enormously if as many people as possible were to give through the Gift Direct scheme. Check out the link given above or call the clergy if you have any specific questions. One-off donations can also be sent to the office. Thank you to those regular givers who have sent cheques recently in lieu of their weekly donations. All your help is deeply appreciated – diolch yn fawr iawn.

Preparations for the re-opening of Churches We are actively preparing for the time when we can open our doors again. Plans are in hand to mark entry and exit routes, to provide the necessary sanitising equipment and supplies and to arrange cleaning of the building as necessary. The chairs have been re-arranged in the building to comply with the 2-metre distancing rules and we will be following the Welsh Government and Church in Wales guidance and protocols.
