NHL EXPANSION DRAFT NOTABLES

* The oldest player to date selected in an NHL expansion draft is , picked at age 40 by the Jets in 1979. Hull played 18 games with in 1979-80, notching 4-6—10.

* Two 37-year-old goaltenders have been claimed in an expansion draft: by the Kings in 1967 and Mike Vernon by the Wild in 2000. Sawchuk played 36 games with Los Angeles, while Minnesota traded Vernon to the day of the expansion draft.

* The youngest player to date selected in an NHL expansion draft is Mike Corrigan, picked at age 21 years, 146 days by the Kings in 1968.

* The youngest goaltenders to date selected in an NHL expansion draft are Billy Smith and , who share the same birthday (Dec. 12, 1950) and were selected by the Islanders and Flames, respectively, in the 1972 expansion draft at age 21 years, 177 days.

* Among players selected in NHL expansion drafts from 1967 through 2000, the last to play an NHL game was Tomas Vokoun (June 7, 2013 w/ PIT). Selected from by Nashville in 1998, Vokoun spent eight seasons with the Predators and left as the franchise leader in regular season wins and games played, titles he held until 2013-14 and 2015-16, respectively.

* Six players selected in an NHL expansion draft have gone on to play at least 10 seasons with the franchise that chose them (min. 1 GP in regular season or ): Billy Smith (17 w/ NYI), defenseman (11 w/ PHI), (11 w/ PHI), forward Alain Cote (10 w/ QUE), forward (10 w/ MNS) and goaltender (10 w/ PHI).

* Goaltender Billy Smith made the most playoff appearances with the franchise that selected him in an NHL expansion draft as he guided the Islanders to 13 playoff berths and four Stanley Cup wins. The highest such total among skaters is nine, by defenseman Joe Watson and forward Gary Dornhoefer with the Flyers.

* A total of 38 players have been selected in multiple NHL expansion drafts, including two chosen three times: goaltender Frederic Chabot (1992 TBL, 1998 NSH, 2000 CBJ) and forward Jim Thomson (1991 MNS, 1992 OTT, 1993 ANA).

* Thirty players selected in an NHL expansion draft have since become head coaches in the League, including two who currently hold that title: Mike Sullivan of the Penguins and of the Sharks (both selected by NSH in 1998).

* Seven players selected in an NHL expansion draft have since become general managers in the League, including current GMs Tom Fitzgerald of the Devils (selected by FLA in 1993) and of the Sabres (selected by CBJ in 2000). PLAYER STATS BEFORE EXPANSION DRAFT SELECTION A total of 519 different players have been selected in the 12 NHL expansion drafts to date (464 skaters, 55 goaltenders).

NHL Season Before Expansion Draft Selection | Charts begin on page 12 * The most NHL points in the previous season by a player picked in an expansion draft is 78, by Phil Goyette – he had 29-49—78 in 72 games with St. Louis in 1969-70 before being claimed by Buffalo. Goyette also has the most NHL assists in the previous season by a player picked in an expansion draft.

* The most NHL goals in the previous season by a player picked in an expansion draft is 30, by – he had 30 goals in 75 games with in 2016-17 before being claimed by Vegas.

* holds the distinction for having the most NHL goals (10; tied), assists (25) and points (35) in the previous season by a defenseman picked in an expansion draft, achieving those totals in 1990-91 with the Maple Leafs before being claimed by the North Stars (34 GP).

* The most wins in the previous season by a goaltender picked in an expansion draft is 24, by Mike Vernon – he had 24 wins in 49 appearances with San Jose and Florida in 1999-00 before being claimed by Minnesota. Vernon was traded to Calgary the day of the expansion draft.

* Two players were selected in an expansion draft after winning an NHL Award in the previous season: won the 1966-67 with before being claimed by St. Louis and Phil Goyette won the 1969-70 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy with St. Louis before being claimed by Buffalo.

* Eighteen players were selected in an expansion draft after ending the previous season by winning the Stanley Cup, with the most recent being goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury who won with in 2017 before being claimed by Vegas. The last before him was goaltender Chris Terreri (Stanley Cup: 2001 w/ NJD; claimed by MIN) and the last skater was Doug Brown (Stanley Cup: 1998 w/ DET; claimed by NSH).

NHL Career Before Expansion Draft Selection | Charts begin on page 14 * Two members hold the distinctions of having the most career goals, assists, points and games played before being selected in an NHL expansion draft: Bobby Hull had 604 NHL goals to his name before the Jets picked him in 1979, while had 793 assists, 1,353 points and 1,126 games played before being chosen by the North Stars in 1991. * In terms of career totals before an expansion draft for players who ended up playing for their selecting franchise, had the most career NHL assists (556; PIT in 1967), Bobby Hull had the most NHL points (1,153; WIN in 1979) and Donnie Marshall had the most games played (1,064; BUF in 1970).

* Looking at defensemen who went on to play with their selecting franchise, Rob Ramage had the highest career totals in terms of career goals (134), assists (410), points (544) and games played (949) before being picked. He had those numbers before being selected by the Lightning in 1992 – one year after he was picked by the North Stars with career totals of 130-405—535 in 915 games played.

* Terry Sawchuk, who was picked by the Kings in 1967, had the most career NHL wins (428) and games played (914) among goaltenders before selection. Marc-Andre Fleury, claimed by the Golden Knights in 2017, ranked second in wins (375) and fourth in games played (691) among goaltenders before selection.

* Eighteen different players (10 skaters, 8 goaltenders) selected in an expansion draft had previously won an individual NHL Award, most recently in 2000 when the Wild selected Mike Vernon (1995-96 William M. Jennings Trophy, 1997 Trophy) and Jamie McLennan (1997-98 Memorial Trophy).

* Sixty-six different players – 56 skaters and 10 goaltenders – selected in an expansion draft had previously won a Stanley Cup in their career. The most Stanley Cup wins by a player before being selected in an NHL expansion draft is seven, by Jean-Guy Talbot (selected by MNS in 1967).

PLAYER STATS WITH SELECTING FRANCHISE A total of 412 players (371 skaters, 41 goaltenders) selected in the 12 NHL expansion drafts to date have gone on to play for their selecting franchise, including 24 who played for each club after being drafted more than once. Overall, 19 have appeared in at least 400 regular-season games with the franchise (15 skaters, 4 goaltenders).

Inaugural Season with Selecting Franchise | Charts begin on page 20 * The most points by a player picked in an expansion draft in that franchise’s inaugural season is 86, by Brian Bradley in 1992-93 with the Lightning (42-44—86 in 80 GP). The next three highest totals were achieved in 2017- 18 by the Golden Knights trio of (43-35—78 in 82 GP), Jonathan Marchessault (27-48—75 in 77 GP) and (16-50—66 in 70 GP).

* The most goals by a player picked in an expansion draft in that franchise’s inaugural season is 43, by William Karlsson in 2017-18 with Vegas; the most assists are 50, by David Perron in 2017-18 with Vegas.

* The most points by a defenseman picked in an expansion draft in that franchise’s inaugural season is 43, by in 1993-94 with Florida (14-29—43 in 84 GP).

* The most goals by a defenseman picked in an expansion draft in that franchise’s inaugural season is 14, achieved twice in 1993-94 by Gord Murphy with Florida and by Bill Houlder with Anaheim.

* The most assists by a defenseman picked in an expansion draft in that franchise’s inaugural season is 34, by in 1992-93 with (7-34—31 in 81 GP).

* The most career goals by a player with their selecting franchise is 267, by Bill Goldsworthy with the North Stars.

* Joe Watson holds the distinctions for the most assists (162) and points (198) by a defenseman with their selecting franchise. Watson had 36-162—198 in 746 career games with the Flyers from 1967-68 to 1977-78.

* The most career goals by a defenseman with their selecting franchise is 42, by Gord Murphy with the Panthers.

* Joe Watson (746 GP) and Gary Dornhoefer (725 GP), who played together with the Flyers for each of the club’s first 11 seasons, are the only players to appear in 700 regular-season games with their selecting franchise.

* The most career wins by a goaltender for a selecting franchise is 304, by Billy Smith with the Islanders. His 674 regular-season appearances with New York also are the most among netminders with their selecting club.

* Seven players (3 skaters, 4 goaltenders) have won an NHL Award with their selecting franchise, totaling 14 pieces of hardware (last: Marc-Andre Fleury, 2020-21 Vezina Trophy and William M. Jennings Trophy w/ VGK).

Teams had three minutes to make each pick, with the orders of selection determined by drawing names from the Stanley Cup – the goaltenders were picked in one grouping (the Kings chose first) and skaters in another (the North Stars chose first). Five of those six franchises went on to win the Cup.

Order of selection was determined by the spin of a wheel. , the first head coach and general manager in Sabres history, chose numbers between eight and 11 and the winning was eight. Buffalo used its first pick in the expansion draft to select , whom they traded to to fulfill a pre- arranged deal that sent goaltender to the Sabres.

The Flames and Islanders entered the NHL’s third expansion draft with a split of first-picks: would get the first selection among goaltenders, and New York the first choice of skaters. Atlanta used its top selection to choose 23-year-old goaltender from the Canadiens, who left the netminder unprotected following a pre- arranged agreement orchestrated by Flames general manager .

The League’s fourth expansion draft in seven years saw the Scouts make the first selections among both goaltenders and skaters – something that hadn’t yet occurred. A member of the Canadiens was picked with an opening selection for the fourth time as Kansas City chose goaltender , who had won a Stanley Cup with Montreal one year earlier.

Selections for skaters and goaltenders were combined into one expansion draft for the first time as four clubs from the joined the NHL; Winnipeg selected first followed by , Hartford and . Subsequent rounds followed a reverse order. The draft marked the NHL return of future Hockey Hall of Fame member Bobby Hull, who was selected by the Jets with the first pick of the third round after seven years in the WHA. As part of the agreement to bring the four WHA franchises into the NHL, the clubs established protected lists of up to two skaters and two goaltenders with the four clubs retaining those players as “Priority Selections.” In total, 13 players were made “Priority Selections” including and .

The NHL’s sixth expansion draft was preceded by a dispersal draft which, as part of the arrangement that kept the North Stars in Minnesota and subsequently granted an expansion franchise for San Jose, permitted the Sharks to choose 24 players from Minnesota’s roster. The dispersal draft was held the morning of May 30, 1991, followed that afternoon by the expansion draft in which San Jose used its first pick to make the only goaltender selected that year. Though not technically an , Minnesota chose Rob Ramage from the Maple Leafs with its first of 10 selections.

The NHL Entry Draft returned to Montreal after a three-year reprieve and so too did the NHL Expansion Draft, with selections made this time at the storied after each of the first five events were held at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Ottawa and Tampa Bay each selected 12 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders, with 18 of 42 those picks appearing on opening-night rosters for each club’s inaugural game less than four months later (nine for OTT, nine for TBL).

The NHL’s eighth expansion draft included two phases. In Phase I, Florida won a coin flip to secure the first choice. Phase II allowed Ottawa, San Jose and Tampa Bay – clubs that each had played two or fewer seasons – to select up to two players total from the rosters of Anaheim and Florida. Only three players were selected in Phase II: and (picked by ANA) were claimed by the Lightning and Senators, respectively; the Lightning also claimed Daren Puppa (from FLA). The Sharks made no Phase II selections.

The first NHL Expansion Draft held in-person in the saw the Predators, the first of four clubs joining the League over a three-year span, select one player from each of the other 26 active franchises. Regulations allowed the selection of two free agents, with Nashville choosing defenseman – who two years earlier had scored the Stanley Cup-clinching goal for Colorado – and goaltender – four years removed from a title with the Rangers. Neither player ended up in a Predators uniform, as Richter re-signed with New York within weeks of his selection – resulting in compensation to the Predators – and Krupp landed on the Wings.

With the ability to select one player from each existing club other than the Predators – who entered the League the year prior – the Thrashers made agreements with various teams to avoid unprotected players such as (DET) and Garth Snow (VAN). Atlanta instead used those picks to choose , who played only one more NHL season (w/ PHI), and , who spent two seasons with the Thrashers.

Rounding out a third expansion draft in as many years, the Jackets made the first selections for goaltenders and forwards – choosing and – while the Wild had first choice of defensemen – nabbing Sean O'Donnell. Columbus selected Sanderson from Buffalo, along with his teammate, goaltender – available in an expansion draft for the third straight year but selected for the first time. Roloson never played for the Blue Jackets, but ended up leading their expansion partner to its first ever playoff appearance in 2002-03 – his second of four seasons with the Wild.

At a live event as part of the NHL Awards, the Golden Knights selected 30 players including four who attended the festivities at their new home, T-Mobile Arena: goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, as well as defensemen Brayden McNabb, Deryk Engelland and Jason Garrison. Fleury was coming off his third Stanley Cup victory with the Penguins and was a driving force behind Vegas’ historic run to the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season. General manager George McPhee and assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon assembled the NHL’s most successful expansion team to date, making several acquisitions associated with the expansion draft.
