Insect Survey of Four Longleaf Pine Preserves
A SURVEY OF THE MOTHS, BUTTERFLIES, AND GRASSHOPPERS OF FOUR NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES IN SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Stephen P. Hall and Dale F. Schweitzer November 15, 1993 ABSTRACT Moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers were surveyed within four longleaf pine preserves owned by the North Carolina Nature Conservancy during the growing season of 1991 and 1992. Over 7,000 specimens (either collected or seen in the field) were identified, representing 512 different species and 28 families. Forty-one of these we consider to be distinctive of the two fire- maintained communities principally under investigation, the longleaf pine savannas and flatwoods. An additional 14 species we consider distinctive of the pocosins that occur in close association with the savannas and flatwoods. Twenty nine species appear to be rare enough to be included on the list of elements monitored by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program (eight others in this category have been reported from one of these sites, the Green Swamp, but were not observed in this study). Two of the moths collected, Spartiniphaga carterae and Agrotis buchholzi, are currently candidates for federal listing as Threatened or Endangered species. Another species, Hemipachnobia s. subporphyrea, appears to be endemic to North Carolina and should also be considered for federal candidate status. With few exceptions, even the species that seem to be most closely associated with savannas and flatwoods show few direct defenses against fire, the primary force responsible for maintaining these communities. Instead, the majority of these insects probably survive within this region due to their ability to rapidly re-colonize recently burned areas from small, well-dispersed refugia. -

St::ttns of 15 Antioch Insects Listed in Notice of 75 Review by the U.S. Fish "l.nd Wildlife Service INTRODUCTION The sand dune formation east of Antioch, Contra Costa County, California, comprised the largest riverine dune system in California. Biogeographically, this formation was unique because it supported a northern extension of plants and animals of desert, rather than coastal, affinities. Geologists believe that the dunes were relicts of the most recent glaciation of the Sierra Nevada, probably originating 10,000 to 25,000 years ago, with the sand derived from the supratidal floodplain of the combined Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. The ice age climate in the area is thought to have been cold but arid. Presumably summertime winds sweeping through the Carquinez Strait across the glacial-age floodplains would have picked up the fine-grained sand and redeposited it to the east and southeast, thus creating the dune fields of eastern Contra Costa County. -

INFLUENCE OF HABITAT AND BAT ACTIVITY ON MOTH COMMUNITY COMPOSITION AND SEASONAL PHENOLOGY ACROSS HABITAT TYPES BY MATTHEW SAFFORD THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2018 Urbana, Illinois Advisor: Assistant Professor Alexandra Harmon-Threatt, Chair and Director of Research ABSTRACT Understanding the factors that influence moth diversity and abundance is important for monitoring moth biodiversity and developing conservation strategies. Studies of moth habitat use have primarily focused on access to host plants used by specific moth species. How vegetation structure influences moth communities within and between habitats and mediates the activity of insectivorous bats is understudied. Previous research into the impact of bat activity on moths has primarily focused on interactions in a single habitat type or a single moth species of interest, leaving a large knowledge gap on how habitat structure and bat activity influence the composition of moth communities across habitat types. I conducted monthly surveys at sites in two habitat types, restoration prairie and forest. Moths were collected using black light bucket traps and identified to species. Bat echolocation calls were recorded using ultrasonic detectors and classified into phonic groups to understand how moth community responds to the presence of these predators. Plant diversity and habitat structure variables, including tree diameter at breast height, ground cover, and vegetation height were measured during summer surveys to document how differences in habitat structure between and within habitats influences moth diversity. I found that moth communities vary significantly between habitat types. -

Efeito da Alimentação Larval na Sobrevivência e no Desenvolvimento de Anicla infecta (Ochsenheimer) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Noctuinae): Pennisetum sp. (Gramineae) e Glycine max L. (Leguminosae) Eduardo Valduga (BIC-UCS), Roberta Bissani (BIC-UCS), Edegar Fronza, Alexandre Specht (orientador) - [email protected] Anicla infecta (Ochsenheimer, 1816) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Noctuinae) é uma espécie de ocorrência registrada em todo o continente americano, cujas larvas caracterizam-se pelo hábito filófago e por alimentarem-se de grande diversidade de plantas hospedeiras. Até o momento já foram registradas mais de 50 plantas hospedeiras que apresentam importância econômica, incluindo especialmente espécies produtoras de cereais, forragem animal e olerícolas. Com o objetivo de avaliar a potencialidade de diferentes noctuídeos em causar danos às culturas produtoras de biocombustíveis, este estudo se propôs avaliar a sobrevivência e o desenvolvimento de A. infecta em diferentes plantas hospedeiras. Neste primeiro momento, avaliou-se a sobrevivência e desenvolvimento desta espécie alimentando as larvas com capim (Pennisetum sp. - Gramineae) e soja BRS Charrua RR (Glycine max L. - Leguminosae). A criação foi realizada em câmara climatizada sob condições de 25±2ºC; 70± 10% UR e 14 horas de fotofase. As larvas recém-eclodidas foram individualizadas em copos plásticos de 100mL de capacidade, com tampa. A alimentação larval foi trocada diariamente e, para garantir a turgescência, suas bases foram inseridas em frascos plásticos com água destilada. De 170 larvas alimentadas com capim obtiveram-se 84 pupas e 82 adultos, que correspondeu a uma sobrevivência larval e pupal de 49,41% e 97,62%, respectivamente. De 275 larvas alimentadas com soja, obtiveram-se 16 pupas e 15 adultos, correspondendo a uma sobrevivência larval e pupal de 5,82% e 93,75%, respectivamente. -

This study was developed aiming to contribute to knowledge of the biology of this species. The rearing was done in an environmental chamber with the following settings: temperature of 25 ± 1ºC; relative humidity of 70% ± 10%, and photoperiod of L14: D10. The larvae fed on ryegrass, Lolium multiflorum Lam. The results express the mean and standard error for the length of every stage in days. For each stage we observed the following time of development: egg 3.2 ± 0.09; larvae 18.7 ± 0.07; pre-pupae 3.3 ± 0.04; pupae 12.6 ± 0.14; and adult longevity was 12.1 ± 1.03. Also the pre-egg-laying period was 4.4 ± 0.59; the egg-laying pe- riod was 8.1 ± 0.84; and the post-egg-laying period was 0.3 ± 0.14. -
