Underveis har det skjedd mange endringer fra den opprinnelige planen, og jeg har lagt den fra meg i lange perioder og rett og slett gitt den opp, bare for å finne den frem igjen. I løpet av disse årene har interessen for stoffet økt, samtidig som omfanget på mange måter økte og oppgavens problemstilling forandret seg. Hadde jeg visst at den skulle være en del av mitt liv frem til 2011 hadde jeg neppe startet arbeidet, men når det er sagt er det godt å være ferdig med det som ble en veldig lang vandring. En av de tingene som jeg gleder meg mest til er nå å kunne sette meg ned med ny litteratur og fordype meg ytterligere i 60-tallet, Leary, San Fransisco, psykedelisk popmusikk, beatforfattere og rett og slett dyrke en hobby og en interesse uten å tenke oppgaveskriving. Den britiske religionssosiologen Paul Heelas viser til tre nøkkelfigurer som har øvet stor innflytelse: Blavatsky, Jung og Gurdjieff (Heelas 1996: 44-48). Fra begynnelsen av 1900- tallet og frem til 60-tallet ble den tradisjonen disse representerer konsolidert, men det var først på 60-tallet at det fant sted et markant oppsving i nyreligiøsitet, eller hva Heelas betegner som selvreligiøsitet (1996: 48-49). Dette fokuset på selvet er ifølge Heelas selve lingua franca i forhold hva som kjennetegner nyreligiøsiteten (1996: 2). Et av målene til Heelas var å definere nyreligiøsiteten som fenomen, ikke å analysere mekanismene som bidro til dens fremvekst og popularitet. Allikevel berører Heelas dette spørsmålet når han påpeker at nye religiøse ideer for alvor ble populære på 60-tallet (1996: 136). Hva skjedde på 60-tallet som bidro til dette oppsvinget i nyreligiøsiteten? Dette spørsmålet danner utgangspunkt for denne oppgaven. Den nederlandske religionsviteren Wouter Hanegraaff foretar en grundig idehistorisk analyse av bevegelsen i verket New Age Religion and Western Culture, Esotericism in the mirror of secular thought (1996). Hanegraaff gir en idehistorisk presentasjon av trosinnholdet i nyreligiøsiteten (som han gir betegnelsen New Age religioner), og viser til de lange idehistoriske linjer og sammenhenger. Han støtter seg til den britiske religionssosiologen Colin Campbell når han foretar en avgrensning i tid og definerer når New Age bevegelsen ble til på slutten av 1970-tallet. Hanegraaff skriver: “The New Age movement is the cultic milieu having become conscious of itself, in the later 1970s, as constituting a more or less unified “movement”” (Hanegraaff 1996: 522). Etter mitt syn burde han, i et slikt omfattende verk brukt mer plass på å drøfte hvordan og hvorfor det “kultiske miljøet ble bevisst på seg selv” engang på slutten av 1970-tallet, og ikke ta dette for gitt. For å få en forståelse av denne tilblivelsesprosessen, vil jeg i denne oppgaven se nærmere på hvordan nyreligiøsitetens ideer og idealer ble en del av den amerikanske (og vestlig) mainstream kultur i løpet av 1960-tallet. Ved å se nærmere på den kulturelle konteksten som nyreligiøsiteten oppsto i, og fokusere på de sosiokulturelle faktorer slik som massemedia, populærkultur, psykedelia og motkulturen1 – 1 Begrepet motkulturen (the counter culture) ble ifølge sosiologen Timothy Miller oppfunnet av Theodore Roszak, og ble på mange måter et akseptert begrep i 1969 etter utgivelsen av Roszaks bok The making of a 4 den såkalte hippiebevegelsen, vil man få en grundigere forståelse av denne prosessen, samtidig som det viser hvordan religiøse ideer kan bli spredd for et større publikum i et moderne mediesamfunn. Før jeg går i gang med selve oppgaven vil jeg gi en kort presentasjon av oppgavens komposisjon og inndeling ved å gi en grov oversikt over innholdet i de enkelte kapitlene. Det er et forholdsvis stort spenn mellom de ulike temaene som jeg fokuserer på, og en slik kortfattet kapitteloversikt vil kunne bidra til å tydeliggjøre sammenhengen mellom de ulike kapitlene, og forhåpentligvis bidra til økt leseopplevelse. I det første kapittelet vil jeg gjøre rede for oppgavens teoretiske, empiriske og metodologiske fundament, samtidig som jeg forklarer mitt valg av kilder. I tillegg har jeg foretatt noen faglige avgrensninger som jeg vil gjøre leseren oppmerksom på. Kapittel 2 fokuserer på den medisinske forskningen på psykedelia for å belyse hva disse stoffene er, og hvordan de fungerer, samtidig som jeg her gir en kortfattet presentasjon av sentrale begreper knyttet til medisinsk forskning med psykedelia. I kapittel 3 fokuserer jeg på et lite utvalg av den forskningen som ble gjort med denne typen stoffer på 50- og 60-tallet. Det viktigste utvelgelseskriteriet her er hvorvidt disse forskningsprosjektene sier noe om forholdet mellom psykedelia og religion. Kapittel 4 er viet til Timothy Leary. Før Leary ble en del av motkulturen på 60-tallet bedrev han psykedelisk forskning. Etter hvert som han blir oppslukt av dette arbeidet skjer det en gradvis forandring hvor han distanserer seg mer og mer fra forskningen og blir mer og mer en talsmann og profet for psykedelia som han anser for å være et soteriologisk verktøy som kan redde menneskeheten. Leary ble i løpet av 60-tallet en mediastjerne og var på mange måter en selvproklamert leder for motkulturen, og bidro til å popularisere ideer som senere ble en viktig del av trosinnholdet i motkulturen. Slik sett blir Leary en nøkkelfigur i den nyreligiøse oppblomstringen som fant sted i kjølvannet av 60-tallets hippiebevegelse. Jeg har valgt å plassere kapittelet om Leary mellom det kapittelet hvor jeg presenterer psykedelisk forskning og kapittelet som fokuserer på motkulturens røtter. Leary hadde en dobbeltrolle og var både forsker og “profet”. I tillegg er den forskning han utførte også av interesse for mitt perspektiv da han fokuserte på forholdet

Volume 1’ – the chapter with the wonderful title of ‘New Morning’, Dylan writes about the idyllic summers he spent with his family at East Hampton, Long Island as the sixties turned slowly into the seventies: ‘I started painting landscapes there. There was plenty to do. We had five kids and often went to the beach, boated on the bay, dug for claims, spent afternoons at a lighthouse near Montauk, went to Gardiner’s Island, hunted for Captain Kidd’s buried treasure - rode bikes, go karts and pulled wagons - went to the movies and the outdoor markets … drove over to Springs a lot where de Kooning had his studio’. I doubt that Dylan, who at the time was craving anonymity, ever went knock,knock, knocking on de Kooning’s door but if he did then he may have spotted the giant canvass that forms the backdrop to this month’s Freewheelin cover. Whether the two artists ever met is not recorded but I have reunited them anyway. Willem de Kooning (1904 – 1997) was born in Rotterdam and started living in America in his twenties. He was a leading light in the American art movement of the 1940’s known as Abstract Expressionism which also spawned other luminaries such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothco. Paintings from this genre are easy to look at but hard to define because Abstract Expressionism is the artist expressing a deeply felt emotion by the use of form and colour on canvas. It is a non-representational, or non objective art which means that there are no concrete objects in the picture.

    David Gans: Stories from the Road... and the Real World, Too It somehow seems appropriate that "Shove in the Right Direction," the first track on David Gans' wonderful new CD, The Ones That Look the Weirdest Taste the Best, kicks right in with a hot in- strumental jam, with careening fiddle, clucking banjo, bopping mandolin, driving acoustic guitar, thumping bass and cracking drums, all locked in and dancing together. "Shove in the Right Di- rection" is a tale of uncertainly and perseverance in strange times that sounds like it could have been plucked from this morning's paper. For although during the past several years David has es- tablished himself as the consummate troubadour, traveling the country solo with just an electro- acoustic guitar and a few gadgets, he's always been an amazingly sympathetic ensemble player. So there's something about this new music that just feels right. Out of the gate, track one an- nounces that this disc is going to show us a different side of David Gans. Some of the songs may be ones you’ve seen him perform solo in your local club or at one of the many summer and fall music festivals that have become part of his touring regimen, but chances are you’ve never heard them played like this. After releasing a series of fine solo recordings the last several years, for this outing David has surrounded himself with a helluva group of great players. The extremely versatile core band is 4/6 of the adventurous jamgrass unit Railroad Earth—violinist/harmonica player Tim Carbone (who also produced the CD), mandolinist and pianist John Skehan III, multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling, and bassist Johnny Grubb—who also perform together in a side group called the Shockenaw Mountain Boys.

    Recent Studies of Book Illustration and Engraving, including Cartography, 1985–2016 This bibliography surveys scholarship published between 1985–2016 on engraving, including illustrations, prints, and emblems, as well as cartography, during the long eighteenth century (roughly 1650–1820). The focus is on Europe and the Americas, but some of Asian developments, particularly Japanese, have been included. The bibliography is most inclusive for the years 1990-2014, in consequence of my compiling studies from those years for Section 1— "Printing and Bibliographical Studies"—of the ECCB: The Eighteenth-Century Current Bibliography. A shorter version of this list without cartographic materials appeared in The East- Central Intelligencer, n.s. 15, no. 1 (January 2001), 58-77. Then an intermediate version appeared at Kevin Berland's C18-L website. During 2015–17, I expanded the list four times, with it now reaching 236 pages in typescript. The bibliography includes cartography (particularly the printed products of map-making), but excellent annual surveys of cartographic publications have been compiled by Francis Herbert, Wouter Bracke, and Nick Millea for Imago Mundi (entered under their names below). It lists dissertations and reviews for books. Focused on printed sources, it fails to note some valuable electronic sources, such as Juliette Sodt's website on illustration in botanical books, <www. library.wwu.edu/ref/subjguides/BOTILL.htm>, and many exhibition catalogues posted on the web by museums (only some recent exhibitions are included). It is also common to note the uneven quality of his artistic output—as songwriter, recording artist, and performer—during the fifty years of his still-continuing career.
