Though he disavowed the role, Garcia was viewed by many as the leader or "spokesman" of the group. One of its founders, Garcia performed with the Grateful Dead for their entire thirty-year career (1965–1995). Garcia also founded and participated in a variety of side projects, including the Saunders-Garcia Band (with longtime friend Merl Saunders), the Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, the Garcia/Grisman acoustic duo, Legion of Mary, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage (which Garcia co-founded with John Dawson and David Nelson).

  • “The Greatest Gift Is the Realization That Life Does Not Consist Either In
“The greatest gift is the realization that life does not consist either in wallowing in the past or peering anxiously into the future; and it is appalling to contemplate the great number of often painful steps by which ones arrives at a truth so old, so obvious, and so frequently expressed. It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now –this day-this hour.” Charles Macomb Flandrau Ernest Hemingway drank here. Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevera drank here. A longhaired young hippie musician named Jimmy Buffett drank and performed here, too. From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living.

  • Tuvan Throat Singing and the Legend of the Horse Head Fiddle
Sarah Wallin Tuvan Throat Singing and the Legend of the Horse Head Fiddle At the geographical center of Asia, surrounded by the Altai-Sayan mountain system, lies the country of Tuva. Fifty percent of its mountainous territory is covered with forests of firs, Siberian larches, cedars, pines, and poplars. Four hundred lakes spot the region, many of which are glacial, (though Tuva is also known for its warm, curative waters); and the Jenisej river, one of the longest rivers of our planet, originates in the territory of Tuva and flows over two thousand miles north to the Arctic Ocean. Additionally, more than 1,500 species of plants, 240 types of birds, and a large variety of animal species (including the lynx, the glutton, the sable, the beaver, the yak, and the camel) inhabit Tuva. (Geography 1) “Tuva is a country of great variety with almost every type of landscape: luxuriant meadows, green taiga [or, forests], boundless steppes, medicinal springs, beautiful lakes, rushing mountain rivers fed in spring by melting snows, dusty semi-desert and snowy chains of mountains.” (Tuva 2) There is archaeological evidence of tribal warfare and settlement in the Tuvan region since the Paleolithic era, but in the year 1207 AD, when Genghis Khan swept through the area with his troops, Tuva was brought under Mongolian rule and remained a state of Mongolia for the next five centuries. Then, from the mid-eighteenth century until 1911, after the dissolve of the Mongolian empire, the people came under the Chinese Ch’ing or Manchu dynasty. From 1914 to 1917, Tuva was a Russian protectorate, and, in 1921, the independent Tuvinian People’s Republic, with the city of Kyzyl as its capital, was established.

  • Tuvan Throat Singing
O’Toole 1 Caitlin O’Toole Dr. Greene World Music December 1, 2015 Tuvan Throat Singing: The Globalization of the Tuvan Spirit Rooted deeply in spiritual and traditional practical uses, the unique practice of throat singing and the folk song genres of the nation are encountering many challenges in the modernization and the merge into the global music world. Tuvan throat singing is an intense skill that is a cultural norm in the North-East Asian region, and has just recently begun to disperse globally, beginning an experiment of how cultural-specific spiritual musical practices are translated and interpreted around the world. This paper provides an analysis of the integration of the Tuvan throat singing practices in the Western music world, focusing on how the context in which it is performed impacts the performance and the aesthetic meaning of the music. In accomplishing this paper’s aim, an in-depth historical and cultural perspective is necessary, thus through the work of ethnomusicologists’ field work, the genre’s spiritual roots are identified, followed by the use of traditional performer’s opinions, commentaries and current perspectives that will forge a connecting revelation into how the perception of this music is struggling to adjust to the culturally ignorant ear. The methodology for this paper includes collections of articles and books that offer descriptions of the Tuvan culture, history, and explanations of the complex throat-singing genres within the region, followed by the comparison and analysis of modern-day sub- genres that are arising as a result of the globalization of Tuvan throat singing.

  • Throat Singing)
The Pearl of Tuva: Authenticity and Tuvan Khorekteer (Throat Singing) Alexander Glenfield Abstract: The Russian Republic of Tuva is home to the solo multiphonic singing styles encompassed under the umbrella terms khorekteer and khoomei. This paper explores the conceptual complexities of authenticity pertaining to Tuvan throat singing. The author reveals ethnicity and race as primary authenticity markers as expressed by indigenous performers of Tuvan music. This paper also examines the events surrounding the 2002 Dembildei International Throat Singing Competition held in Tuva’s capital city Kyzyl. Concerns of authenticity as expressed by the panel of judges for Dembildei 2002 are presented alongside some other political, social, and economic forces that resonate around this event. I recall an advertising campaign initiated by the popular clothing and accessory giant, GAP in 1994. Rolling Stone was one of many magazines to feature a full-page spread of a contemplative Miles Davis seated somewhat awkwardly in a metal studio chair and dressed in khaki trousers. The photograph was taken nearly forty years before the GAP’s advertising crusade for the revival of plain khaki pants. A series of memorable GAP television advertisements that hit the airwaves in 1999 always concluded with the perfunctory catch phrase ‘This is original.” One of the more short-lived commercials featured trumpeter and co composer of The Little Spanish Flea, Herb Alpert. Alpert wandered the stark white backdrop of the ad while playing his trumpet. The borders of the room were amorphous, intersections where ground meets wall and wall meets ceiling were eerily blurred. Alpert concluded his playful romp with the token statement of GAP’s claim to authenticity: ‘This is original.” The system of signs accounting for the American trumpet player’s aura of authenticity is worthy of analysis on its own and it is unlikely that the selection of these two separate advertising icons was arbitrary.
