    The Queen’s Gambit: Explaining the Superstar Effect Using Evidence from Chess * Eren Bilen† Alexander Matros‡ September 24, 2021 Abstract. Superstars exist in classrooms and workplaces. Superstars can either intimidate others by making their peers put in less effort, or they can encourage others by inspiring everybody to “step up” their game. In this study, we analyze direct and indirect effects of a superstar on their peers using evidence from chess. We find that the direct superstar effect is always negative. The indirect superstar effect depends on the intensity of the superstar: if the skill gap between the superstar and the rest is small (large), there is a positive (negative) peer effect. General Session held at Rome on April 26, 1966. Since that time the Japanese Olympic Committee has been busy planning for the event. Many of the sites to be used are completed, and some have already been used for regional games. Sapporo is a city which was constructed from the beginning with the idea that it was to be the capital of Hokkaido (formerly called Ezo). It was designed very systematically, unlike Tokyo which simply grew outward in all directions from the site of the Emperor's castle. In 1970, the city had a population surpassing one million, and it will actually be the first time the Winter Olympic Games will have been held in a city of this size. The name Sapporo comes from the Ainu, Saliporobetsu, meaning 'a river with a great spread of reeds and rushes'. It has many natural ski areas, and being the northernmost island of Japan, the weather is ideal with no problems of lack of snow during the time the Games will be held, which has happened before at Winter Games. The Olympic Village is 5 kilometers directly south of the city center, near the Makomanai residential area. Facilities for the athletes and officials are being prepared in what promises to be ideal conditions.

Miles won more than ten supertournaments (twice at IBM-Amsterdam, twice at Tilburg, twice at Biel, at London Phillips & Drew Kings, Las Palmas, Vrbas, Baden-Baden, Vidmar Memorial and four times the Capablanca Memorial in the 1990s). He was Junior World Chess Champion in 1974, and the first ever English native Grandmaster otb. Miles played in an extraordinary number of chess events during his career, including many arduous weekend tournaments.     Portisch Lajos (04.04.1937) Hungarian Grandmaster (1961), one of the world’s best chess players during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. A hard-working, modest, talented and a first class sportsman. His main hobby is singing operatic arias, having a fine baritone voice, a quality shared by Vasily Smyslov. In 2004, Portisch was awarded the 'Nemzet Sportoloja', Hungary's highest national sports achievement award. Nine times National Hungarian Champion: • February 1958, December 1958, 1961, 1962, 1964, December 1965, 1971, 1975 and 1981 A member of twenty Hungarian Olympiad teams between 1956 and 2000 where he won all in all eleven Olympiad medals (team and individual points or performance). Lajos Portisch also played on board one for his team to win the Gold medal for Hungary at the Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires 1978, surpassing the USSR. Portisch has also represented Hungary at eight European Team Championships, winning a total of nine medals (individual and team all together). Portisch played again board one for Hungary at the inaugural World Team Championship, Lucerne 1985 as Hungary won the team silver medals. Portisch learned to play chess at an early age, the game being played often in his family. Lajos steadily progressed over the years. He first made a name for himself in 1958 when he won the Hungarian championship and an international tournament at Balatonfured (Asztalos Memorial). Apart from national championships and (inter)zonals, he played in about 75 strong events from 1956 to the 1990s, winning or sharing about 25 first prizes

The Congress was arranged by the Scottish Correspondence Chess Association. Participants of the Congress were received by the Provost and Councillors of Perth & Kinross District Council. There was also a Musical Evening. A sightseeing excursion in Highland Perthshire and a visit to Scotland's National Heather Garden in Perth were offered by the Scottish CCA to the participants and a nice Ladies' Programme was also arranged.. The President H.J. Mostert (NLD) took the chair. Taking part in the Congress were: S. Al-Kuwari (Qatar) as the Delegate for Qatar. A.R. Al-Meer (Qatar) as member of the Qatar Delegation. Dr. F.
