    The Queen’s Gambit: Explaining the Superstar Effect Using Evidence from Chess * Eren Bilen† Alexander Matros‡ September 24, 2021 Abstract. Superstars exist in classrooms and workplaces. Superstars can either intimidate others by making their peers put in less effort, or they can encourage others by inspiring everybody to “step up” their game. In this study, we analyze direct and indirect effects of a superstar on their peers using evidence from chess. We find that the direct superstar effect is always negative. The indirect superstar effect depends on the intensity of the superstar: if the skill gap between the superstar and the rest is small (large), there is a positive (negative) peer effect. RULES & REGULATIONS The Championship will be played in accordance with the following rules and regulations: 1. ELIGIBILITY & PARTICIPATION 1.1 Each Federation from FIDE Zones 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7 can enter one official player in the Open and one official player in the Women’s Division. 1.2 In addition, each Federation may send extra players rated 2300 and above for the Open, and 2000 and above for Women based on the May 2013 FIDE Rating List. Extra players will be responsible for the payment of their board and lodging through the Organizing Committee. Exceptions for the rating floor may be made by the Continental President on request of national federations. 2. PLAYING CONDITIONS The tournament shall be conducted as a Swiss System competition of 9 rounds and will be played according to FIDE regulations. The time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one.

    v/i1 / !«£» Number 5 May - June 1971 Volume 9 &%ewiew te ^Pafifioko by Helen Turner XI WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES City of Sapporo on the Island of Hokkaido, Japan February 3-13, 1972 The privilege of hosting the Winter Olympic Games was awarded to the city of Sapporo at the 6«4th I.O.C. General Session held at Rome on April 26, 1966. Since that time the Japanese Olympic Committee has been busy planning for the event. Many of the sites to be used are completed, and some have already been used for regional games. Sapporo is a city which was constructed from the beginning with the idea that it was to be the capital of Hokkaido (formerly called Ezo). It was designed very systematically, unlike Tokyo which simply grew outward in all directions from the site of the Emperor's castle. In 1970, the city had a population surpassing one million, and it will actually be the first time the Winter Olympic Games will have been held in a city of this size. The name Sapporo comes from the Ainu, Saliporobetsu, meaning 'a river with a great spread of reeds and rushes'. It has many natural ski areas, and being the northernmost island of Japan, the weather is ideal with no problems of lack of snow during the time the Games will be held, which has happened before at Winter Games. The Olympic Village is 5 kilometers directly south of the city center, near the Makomanai residential area. Facilities for the athletes and officials are being prepared in what promises to be ideal conditions.

    ANTHONY MILES (born Apr-23-1955, died Nov-12-2001, 46 years old) United Kingdom. Miles won more than ten supertournaments (twice at IBM-Amsterdam, twice at Tilburg, twice at Biel, at London Phillips & Drew Kings, Las Palmas, Vrbas, Baden-Baden, Vidmar Memorial and four times the Capablanca Memorial in the 1990s). He was Junior World Chess Champion in 1974, and the first ever English native Grandmaster otb. Miles played in an extraordinary number of chess events during his career, including many arduous weekend tournaments. At the age of five, Miles was taught chess by his father.(1) He was educated at King Edward's school in Birmingham, and went on to study Mathematics at Sheffield University, declining an offered place at Oxford.(1) He never finished his university education, opting to become a professional chess player instead.(1) Early Chess Career In 1968, Miles won the British U-14 Championship,(2) and the British U-21 Championship in 1971.(3) He debuted in the British Championships (1972), scoring 50%.(3) The next year, Miles went on to share 4th at Lone Pine (1973), won the Silver medal at the Junior World Championship in Teesside (1973) and beat the tournament winner Alexander Beliavsky in their individual encounter, Beliavsky vs Miles, 1973.(2) He also won at Birmingham (1973) International tournament ahead of Andras Adorjan and Arthur Bisguier and lost not a single game in 11 rounds.(1)(3) and again at Birmingham (1974) ahead of Tringov.
