2004 Graduate Bulletin Broadcasting • Broadcast Sales About the Cover

TOP: “He’s wild, he’s crazy, he’s Insane Dane -- host of the “Three Song Throw Down” on WVUB-FM.” This quote comes from a description of Dane Foley’s on-air persona, made in a faculty letter nominating him for an Career & Technical Education Award for Excellence. In February, Dane became the VU Broadcasting Department’s recipient of this award for 2004, the department’s fourth consecutive winner. Dane joined the Broadcasting program in the Fall semester of 2002. He quickly became an asset in the department, through his class participation, his volunteerism, and his willingness to help other students. Dane’s volunteer efforts and achievements include a volunteer Friday night radio show dubbed “Request Blazers Best” on WVUB-FM, our 50,000 watt public radio station; numerous volunteer “remote” broadcasts on WVUB; working as a board operator for basketball games and other on-air shifts; training second year students preparing for their shifts on WVUB; peer tutoring in the Broadcasting Department; and gathering, writing, and recording news for WVUB. In June, 2003, Dane was hired as the student Assistant Program Director of WVUB-FM.

LEFT: Terri Darlington is News Anchor, and Bo McFall is Sports Anchor, as part of their responsibilities for WVUT-TVs Evening Newscast. Both Terri and Bo have achieved great success in the Broadcasting Department; both have served as peer tutors. Terri holds a 4.0 GPA, and is preparing to earn a Radio Marketing Professionals Certificate from the Radio Advertising Bureau. Bo has worked in programming, promotions and public service in non-commercial radio, and is currently working as a Camera Operator/Editor at WEHT-TV in Evansville, Indiana.

RIGHT: Spencer Hight volunteers, and works alongside professionals, as he does play-by-play and color commentary for Vincennes University Blazers Men’s Basketball. Spencer has concentrated his efforts toward gaining experience in sports broadcasting. He has done an internship with Pacers Sports and Entertainment in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has done play-by- play and color commentary for both WVUB-FM and WFML-FM, in Vincennes, Indiana. Dear Fellow Broadcaster:

Thank you for taking the time to look over this booklet, which introduces our 2004 graduates and tells a little bit about Vincennes University Broadcasting.

Vincennes University Broadcasting has two goals: to prepare qualified graduates for successful employment in Radio, Television, and allied career areas and to prepare them for transfer to four-year schools after their graduation from VU. This booklet will explain how we prepare our students to be productive assets to your business. The major advantage our graduates have over graduates of other Broadcasting Programs is “Hands-On” experience. Within this booklet you will read descriptions of the extensive exposure to “real world” broadcasting that our students are required to experience.

Also, this booklet lists graduates of our “Broadcast Sales” option. These stu- dents have been specially trained in the area of broadcast sales and all come with actual “on-the-street” sales experience.

There are many reasons why more and more stations and allied businesses are turning to VU whenever they have entry-level or mid-management openings. The main reason, though, is the same as it has always been -- our students have solid training in the basics, receive countless hours of hands-on training, and know what it’s like to work in the broadcast business!

Please take a few moments to read this booklet, and if you have any questions, feel free to call me at (812) 888-5417. Better yet, take some time out of your busy schedule and pay us a visit. We’re sure you’ll like what you see!

Sincerely,

Douglas A. Young Chairman of Broadcasting Vincennes University Vincennes, Indiana 47591 [email protected]

WVUT-TV/WVUT-DT WVUT-TV is the University’s PBS affiliate serving Southwestern Indiana and Southeastern Illinois through the combined efforts of staff and students. Students are involved daily in all operations of the station.

A daily 30 minute newscast, “Newscenter 22,” is broadcast live at 5:00 pm and re- broadcast at 11:00 pm. “Newscenter 22” has been presented with a Spectrum Award for Best TV Newscast in the Non-commercial TV category, by the Indiana Broadcasters Association. Students anchor the news, sports, and weather; shoot and edit stories; switch and direct; and operate all equipment necessary for the production. WVUT-DT is the first public digital television station to go on-air in Indiana, broadcasting a high definition and standard definition schedule daily.

Page 26 WVUT also produces “22 Magazine,” a public affairs magazine program. Students produce, edit and shoot program features and may help co- host the program. They also pro- duce public television promotional materials and commercials for out- side clients.

WVUT-TV / WVUT-DT Page 27 Radio Production

In addition to four on-air radio stations, there are eight audio production studios that contain a variety of professional audio production equipment. In the VU tradition of “hands-on” training, students learn to operate every piece of audio equipment in every studio. Students are required to use these studios for various projects. From our digital audio consoles to our “Adobe Audition” (formerly “Cool Edit Pro”) 64 track digital editors, stu- dents learn and practice on the latest audio equipment. The Broadcasting Department faculty and staff works directly with students in both formal and arranged lab situations.

Page 28 TV Production

Through the combina- tion of staff and stu- dents, WVUT-TV 22 produces more hours of local production than most public television stations. This could not be accomplished without staff and stu- dents working together to accomplish daily tasks and goals. Students are crew members for the night- ly newscast, sports remotes, public affairs programs, and other productions throughout the year. Three AVID editing suites and two Adobe Audition suites are utilized for high end production.

“The major advantage VU Broadcasting grads have over other programs is hands-on experience.”

Page 29 WVUB — Blazer 91.1 91.1 WVUB, is a Hot Adult Contemporary/Contemporary Hit Radio 50,000 watt Public Radio Station. WVUB is affiliated with Public Radio International and the Associated Press. These affiliations provide our listeners with the most up to date information and enable WVUB to provide quality pro- gramming to a wide base of listeners.

WVUB is staffed by students who perform most of the on-air duties and production for the station. Students work with the AudioVault Express automation system when on- air, providing them with the training they otherwise would only receive at commercial stations.

Students on WVUB are supervised and trained by Broadcasting faculty and staff who have backgrounds in the commercial industry. On-air per- formance, improving communication skills and keeping the audience entertained and informed are just some of the goals students work toward when on-air. WFML-FM WFML-FM, “Hot 96.7,” is a com- mercial station staffed and operated by professionals who work with the students in several areas. Students engineer sporting events, go on remote broadcasts, and shadow the sales staff.

Page 30 WROL-FM & WROK-FM WROL-FM (87.9) and WROK-FM (88.5) are low-power stations that are formatted much like regular commercial radio stations. Both stations are also streamed on the internet at www.vinu.edu. WROK-FM is a classic and current rock music sta- tion, while WROL-FM plays the latest contemporary pop, rock, and urban music. First year students have required shifts on these stations to develop their on-air presentation skills. Advanced radio students are staff members for these stations and develop skills in many practical areas of station operations.

Remotes

A variety of radio and television remotes are produced with students each year, rang- ing from men’s and women’s college basketball, volleyball, political debates, and elec- tion returns, to the Miss Vincennes University Scholarship Program (winner of the Indiana Public Broadcasting “Best Performance Award”). Page 31 Multimedia

Students can catch the wave of the future and enter the Broadcasting-Multimedia Option. Multimedia is the creative union of graphics, animation, audio, video, and text to produce an informative, eye-catching visual multimedia display that may end up on the Internet or on an Interactive-CD. This option provides students with the basic skills and techniques to move into this fast growing, challenging, and rewarding field.

Students in the Multimedia program gain a working knowledge of equipment and procedures in a project based environment. In the computer lab, students utilize Final Cut Pro and I-Movie, as well as Linear Editors to develop skills in multimedia authoring and animation.

Page 32 Broadcast Sales Option Vincennes University Broadcasting offers a “Sales Option” in its Broadcasting pro- gram. Students who successfully complete this option develop a more specific back- ground in broadcast sales. Radio, television, and cable selling techniques are pre- sented and practiced. The successful Vincennes University Broadcast Sales student has a working knowledge of Arbitron and Nielsen rating techniques and uses, local regional, and national selling differences in addition to direct and agency selling skills.

Vincennes University’s commercially programmed WFML is a working laboratory for the Broadcast Sales students.

Based upon the strength of our sales instruction, students who successfully complete the sales option will be eligible to take the Radio Marketing Professional test and become certified by the Radio Advertising Bureau. This places our graduates at a higher level when interviewing for a job. Vincennes University is the only college in the country “partnering” with the RAB in this manner, and shows our commitment to properly preparing our students.
