Vincennes University 2004 Graduate Bulletin Broadcasting • Broadcast Sales About the Cover Vincennes University 2004 Graduate Bulletin Broadcasting • Broadcast Sales About the Cover TOP: “He’s wild, he’s crazy, he’s Insane Dane -- host of the “Three Song Throw Down” on WVUB-FM.” This quote comes from a description of Dane Foley’s on-air persona, made in a faculty letter nominating him for an Indiana Career & Technical Education Award for Excellence. In February, Dane became the VU Broadcasting Department’s recipient of this award for 2004, the department’s fourth consecutive winner. Dane joined the Broadcasting program in the Fall semester of 2002. He quickly became an asset in the department, through his class participation, his volunteerism, and his willingness to help other students. Dane’s volunteer efforts and achievements include a volunteer Friday night radio show dubbed “Request Blazers Best” on WVUB-FM, our 50,000 watt public radio station; numerous volunteer “remote” broadcasts on WVUB; working as a board operator for basketball games and other on-air shifts; training second year students preparing for their shifts on WVUB; peer tutoring in the Broadcasting Department; and gathering, writing, and recording news for WVUB. In June, 2003, Dane was hired as the student Assistant Program Director of WVUB-FM. LEFT: Terri Darlington is News Anchor, and Bo McFall is Sports Anchor, as part of their responsibilities for WVUT-TVs Evening Newscast. Both Terri and Bo have achieved great success in the Broadcasting Department; both have served as peer tutors. Terri holds a 4.0 GPA, and is preparing to earn a Radio Marketing Professionals Certificate from the Radio Advertising Bureau. Bo has worked in programming, promotions and public service in non-commercial radio, and is currently working as a Camera Operator/Editor at WEHT-TV in Evansville, Indiana. RIGHT: Spencer Hight volunteers, and works alongside professionals, as he does play-by-play and color commentary for Vincennes University Blazers Men’s Basketball. Spencer has concentrated his efforts toward gaining experience in sports broadcasting. He has done an internship with Pacers Sports and Entertainment in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has done play-by- play and color commentary for both WVUB-FM and WFML-FM, in Vincennes, Indiana. Dear Fellow Broadcaster: Thank you for taking the time to look over this booklet, which introduces our 2004 graduates and tells a little bit about Vincennes University Broadcasting. Vincennes University Broadcasting has two goals: to prepare qualified graduates for successful employment in Radio, Television, and allied career areas and to prepare them for transfer to four-year schools after their graduation from VU. This booklet will explain how we prepare our students to be productive assets to your business. The major advantage our graduates have over graduates of other Broadcasting Programs is “Hands-On” experience. Within this booklet you will read descriptions of the extensive exposure to “real world” broadcasting that our students are required to experience. Also, this booklet lists graduates of our “Broadcast Sales” option. These stu- dents have been specially trained in the area of broadcast sales and all come with actual “on-the-street” sales experience. There are many reasons why more and more stations and allied businesses are turning to VU whenever they have entry-level or mid-management openings. The main reason, though, is the same as it has always been -- our students have solid training in the basics, receive countless hours of hands-on training, and know what it’s like to work in the broadcast business! Please take a few moments to read this booklet, and if you have any questions, feel free to call me at (812) 888-5417. Better yet, take some time out of your busy schedule and pay us a visit. We’re sure you’ll like what you see! Sincerely, Douglas A. Young Chairman of Broadcasting Vincennes University Vincennes, Indiana 47591 [email protected] Page 1 Cody Barnard 10870 N. Most analyses of public radio listening examine the performance of individual stations within this large mix, the contributions of specific national programs, or aggregate numbers for the system as a whole. This report takes a different approach. Through an extensive, multi-year study of 228 stations that generate about 80% of public radio’s audience, we review patterns of listening to groups of stations categorized by the formats that they present. We find that stations that pursue different format strategies – news, classical, jazz, AAA, and the principal combinations of these – have experienced significantly different patterns of audience growth in recent years and important differences in key audience behaviors such as loyalty and time spent listening. This quantitative study complements qualitative research that the Station Resource Group, in partnership with Public Radio Program Directors, and others have pursued on the values and benefits listeners perceive in different formats and format combinations. Key findings of The Public Radio Format Study include: • In a time of relentless news cycles and a near abandonment of news by many commercial stations, public radio’s news and information stations have seen a 55% increase in their average audience from Spring 1999 to Fall 2004.

For centuries, it has linked the eastern and western regions of the Indian subcontinent, running from Bengal, across north India, into Peshawar, Pakistan. Horses, donkeys, and pedestrians compete with huge trucks, cars, motorcycles, rickshaws, and bicycles along the highway, a commercial route that is dotted with areas of activity right off the road: truck stops, farmer’s stands, bus stops, and all kinds of commercial activity.

Dear Fellow Broadcaster: Welcome to the newest edition of the Graduate Bulletin from Vincennes University’s Broadcasting Department. It introduces our graduates from May, August, and December of 2008. This Bulletin is also available online. You can access it in three easy steps: • Visit the VU website at vinu.edu • At the VU homepage word search “Broadcasting” • Select Grad Bulletin This is the first year that our students are required to have completed both the Production and Sales track for graduation. Our Advisory Committee has informed us over the past two years that stations are looking for employees who can perform a variety of tasks, especially in the TV reporting area. Our students will be able to shoot ENG, write their own script, do a stand-up, and edit their own footage. In addition, after our graduates pass the Radio Marketing Professional (RMP) test, they will continue to be certified by the Radio Advertising Bureau. WVUB-FM has taken the leap into high-definition broadcasting. WVUB-The Blazer continues to be extremely popular in southern Indiana. Now we offer WVUB HD-2 with a Cool Jazz format. To listen to WVUB HD-2, go to vinu.edu and click on “WVUB HD-2 Plays Cool Jazz” on the left side of the page near the bottom. Vincennes University continues to give students a hands-on education from the very first week of classes. In the opening week of labs, our students learn the operation of studio cameras and audio boards. VU Broadcasting is far from “theory” oriented. We keep our equipment as state-of-the-art as possible.

A second survey of 18 networks sought to gather indepth information on network operation. Results showed that 22.2 percent of the stations surveyed were participating in program cooperatives, and over 79 percent felt that network participation would be beneficial. It was concluded that the cooperative program tape network should continue in order to fulfill specialized programing needs.
