Please take a moment to view our latest edition of the Graduate Bulletin featuring the recent graduates from the Vincennes University Broadcasting Department. It will provide prospective employers with those students that are graduating in May, August and December of 2010.

Our broadcasting and sales students are educated in audio production and announcing, video production, advertising sales, and writing for media. The VU broadcasting department is as “real world” hands-on as possible, utilizing our up-to-date radio and television facilities.
2010 continues to be a good year for the Broadcasting Department. WVUB won the Community Service Award in 2009. WVUB continues to operate an HD1 channel in a Top 40 format, while HD2 is Smooth Jazz, and HD3 is Spanish Programming with Regional Mexican and Latin Music. WVUT will be converting its studio to a full HD facility during the summer months. WVUT continues to program PBS programming on its HD channel and programs separate PBS Create and the Indiana Channel programming on SD1.
Vincennes University broadcasting has its students working with audio and video equipment during their first week of class in our radio and TV studios. The sales portion of the curriculum includes the students making simulated sales calls and proposals with simulated clients.
VU broadcasting students are employed in many facilities throughout Indiana, the Midwest, major markets throughout the country, and with networks such as CNN and Speed.

Page 15 TV Production Through the combination of staff and students, WVUT-TV 22 produces more hours of local production than most public television stations. This could not be accomplished without staff and students working together to complete daily tasks and goals. Students are crew members for the nightly newscast, sports remotes, public affairs programs, and other productions throughout the year. AVID editing suites, coupled with two machine linear editing, are utilized for production.

Page 16 WVUT-HD
WVUT-HD is the University’s PBS affiliate serving Southwestern Indiana and Southeastern Illinois through the combined efforts of staff and students. Students are involved daily in all operations of the station.
A daily 30 minute newscast is produced by students and staff. “Newscenter 22,” is broadcast live at 5:00 pm and re-broadcast at 11:30 pm. “Newscenter 22” has been presented with a Spectrum Award for Best TV Newscast in the Non-commercial TV category, by the Indiana Broadcasters Association. Students anchor the news, sports, and weather; shoot and edit stories; switch and direct; and operate all equipment necessary for the production. WVUT-HD is the first public digital television station to go on-air in Indiana, broadcasting a high definition and standard definition schedule daily.
Page 17 WVUT also produces “22 Magazine,” a public affairs magazine program. Students produce, edit and shoot program features and may help co-host the program. They also produce public television promotional materials and commercials for outside clients.

In addition to four on-air radio stations, there are eight audio production studios that contain a variety of professional audio production equipment. In the VU tradition of “hands-on” training, students learn to operate every piece of audio equipment in every studio. Students are required to use these studios for various projects. From our digital audio consoles to our “Adobe Audition” audio editing software, students learn and practice on the latest audio equipment. The Broadcasting Department faculty and staff work directly with students in both formal and arranged lab situations.

91.1, WVUB-HD is a Hot Adult Contemporary/Contemporary Hit Radio 50,000 watt Public Radio Station. WVUB is affiliated with the National Public Radio and American Public Radio networks. These affiliations provide our listeners with the most up to date information and enable WVUB to provide quality programming to a wide base of listeners.
WVUB broadcasts in HD, allowing two more signals on the same frequency. WVUB-HD-2 is Blazer Cool Jazz with NPR news, and WVUB-HD-3 is Blazer Bilingie, the only radio station south of Indianapolis broadcasting in the Spanish language.
WVUB is proud to have won the Indiana Broadcasters Association Indiana Public Radio Station of the Year in 2008-2009, and to have won the coveted Community Service Activity of the Year award during the IBA Spectrum Awards ceremony in 2009-2010.
Students assist professional staff on WVUB. They are supervised and trained by broadcasting faculty and staff who have strong backgrounds in the commercial industry. On-air performance, improving communication skills and keeping the audience entertained and informed are just some of the goals students work toward when on-air with WVUB.

ROK and ROL are internet stations, streamed at www.vinu.edu, and are formatted much like regular commercial radio stations. ROK is a classic and current rock music station, while ROL plays country music. First year students have required shifts on these stations to develop their on-air presentation skills. Advanced radio students are staff members for these stations and develop skills in many practical areas of station operations.

A variety of radio and television remotes are produced with students each year, ranging from men’s and women’s college basketball, political debates, election returns and Meet Your Legislator, to the Miss Vincennes University Scholarship Program (winner of the Indiana Public Broadcasting “Best Performance Award”) and the VU Commencement ceremony.
Page 22 Multimedia
The Multimedia Communications program at Vincennes University is designed to prepare students for successful entry into the career field of their choice. Multimedia is the creative union of graphics, animation, audio, video, and text used to produce an informative, eye-catching, audio-visual computer based presentation. Students will combine artistic ability with technical proficiency to design and create multimedia products.
Students will work on skills that can be adapted to fit a variety of situations. With the continuing changes in technology and the business world, people with the flexibility of multiple skill areas are more likely to make progress in their careers. Students will take a series of skill building courses needed to effectively operate in a computer media environment. They will take a set of core courses that includes audio-video production, photography, web page development, graphic design, computer aided publishing, multimedia production, and broadcast writing.
Students will choose one area of emphasis from the five emphasis areas offered to compliment the core skill courses and provide expertise in a specific career area. The five areas to choose from include Graphic Design, Marketing/Advertising, Broadcasting, Music-Audio Recording, and Computer Web Technology. Each emphasis area has required courses to build specific skills and knowledge.
At Vincennes University we firmly believe in the value of hands‑on, real world experience for students. The Multimedia Communications program is a time intensive course of study. An internship or capstone project is required for all Multimedia Communication majors. We stress the importance of good job habits and developing a strong personal presentation so students can get where they want to go in their careers.

In sales classes, radio, television, and cable selling techniques are presented and practiced. The successful Vincennes University broadcast sales student has a working knowledge of Arbitron and Nielsen rating techniques and uses; local, regional, and national selling differences; in addition to direct and agency selling skills.
Students who successfully complete their sales courses will be eligible to take the Radio Marketing Professional exam and become certified by the Radio Advertising Bureau. Vincennes University is the only university in the country partnering with the RAB in this manner.
