Moynihan concluded, AWe=re a little in shock that he brought that much money, but we=re very excited.@ The topper, who equaled the previous OBS record set by Garifine (Belong to Me) at the 2006 March Sale, was consigned by Raul Reyes=s King=s Equine as hip 333. He was picked up for $115,000 as a FTKOCT yearling on behalf of Reyes= King=s Equine venture, which is made up of five undisclosed partners. Reyes=s previous top seller was a $500,000 Arch filly at the 2005 FTFFEB sale. AReally good horses deserve to sell for that much,@ said an elated Reyes while taking a break from a BBQ celebration back at the barn. AEverybody that picks out good horses was on him. As the sale progressed, I knew that he=d bring over a million dollars based on who was looking at him. He made my job very easy. All you needed to do was treat him right-- he was a very simple horse to train. He was a big kid that was a little Hip 333 bit overweight as a LM yearling. But I could tell that he=d be very good- looking once he grew up.@ The numbers for the two-day sale were impressive. The cumulative average of $158,632 was a March record, and up 15.4% from 2012's sale. The median of $127,500 was also a new top, compared with the previous sale record of $100,000 equaled a year ago and first set in 2008. The buyback percentage was also extremely strong at 22.9%; it was 25% last year. AThere was an appetite for quality horses here and it seemed like if there was anybody in the industry that was looking for one, they were here,@ OBS Director of Sales Tod Wojciechowski commented. AYou have to contribute it to a lot of the consignors stepping their game up and having a lot of nice horses for this sale. The momentum that has been built over the past few years just keeps comingBit=s been an upward spiral effect for this sale. Having a quantity of horses that buyers can spread out on helps--they don=t have to focus on just one or two.@ For the session 83 juveniles brought $15,077,000 for an average of $181,651, up 22.8% from last year. The median soared to $135,000 from $110,000 in 2012. The buyback percentage was 27.2%. AWe thought that there were a few more bullets left for today, and there sure were,@ Wojciechowski continued. AIt was a great two days and a great horse sale. The enthusiasm from the buyers and consignors led to a great day.
