— ABOUT OUR JUDGE —

Dale Romans

Eclipse Award and classic-winning trainer has saddled the winners of nearly 2,000 races, for earnings just shy of $100 million, in his 30-year career, and his stable stars have included turf Kitten’s Joy, -G1 winner Shackleford, Dubai World Cup-G1 winner Roses in May, Breeders’ Cup winners Little Mike (2012 Turf), Court Vision (2011 Mile) and Tapitsfly (2009 Juvenile Fillies Turf), and Travers Stakes-G1 winner Keen Ice. The Louisville, Ky., native, a son of the late leading trainer Jerry Romans, began working in his father’s stable from literally the time he could walk. Licensed as a trainer since age 18, he saddled his first winner Feb. 1, 1987, at Turfway Park with a filly he bought for $1,500. He has won 14 training titles at Downs and ranks second all-time for most wins at the track, and has led the trainers’ lists at Keeneland and Turfway Park. His 114 graded stakes wins to date include those won in 2017 by J Boys Echo and Squadron A. Romans has saddled the winners of 30 Grade 1 races, and earned an Award in 2012 when he sent out four multiple Grade 1 winners: (Pacific Classic and Blue Grass Stakes), Little Mike (Breeders’ Cup Turf, Arling- ton Million and Woodford Reserve Turf Classic), Tapitsfly (Just a Game and First Lady) and Shackleford (Metropolitan and Clark Handicaps). That year he was also presented with the Big Sport of Turfdom Award which is “bestowed upon a person or group of people who enhance coverage of Thoroughbred rac- ing through cooperation with media and Thoroughbred racing publicists.” The Romans’ operation includes Liberty Lane Training Center in Goshen, Ky., a few miles from Louisville, and a 110-acre nursery near Lexington, and has expanded into the auction ring with Romans Racing & Sales consignments. CLASS V—Championship Class

Grand champion and reserve champion will be judged from the winners of Classes I-IV. THE CHANCELAND FARM CHALLENGE TROPHY, awarded to the owner of the champion yearling, must be won three times by the same exhibitor to become his perma- nent possession. That exhibitor is then obligated either to place it back in competition or to replace it with a comparable trophy. The Chanceland Farm trophy is given by Robert T. Manfuso and Katharine M. Voss, who retired the Foxharbor Farm Challenge Trophy in 2015. The Foxharbor Farm Challenge Trophy was given by Ann Jackson in memory of her husband Cary, who gained permanent possession of the Chanceland Farm Chal- lenge Trophy in 2010 after winning it three times. The Chanceland Farm Challenge Tro- phy was first offered in 2000, after Robert T. Manfuso retired the Blarney Challenge Tro- phy in 1999. First offered in 1961, the Blarney Challenge Trophy was given by the late Rigan McKinney, who obtained permanent possession of the Straus Challenge Trophy. The Chanceland Farm Challenge Trophy has been won by Sagamore Farm.

Brandt’s Mill has been family owned and operated for over 75 years. We are a single species mill developing only equine feed. We make our own custom horse feed and we are partnered with Kentucky Equine Research (KER), an internationally renowned equine research institute dedicated to giving horses the best nutrition possible. Partnering with KER gives us access to cutting edge equine nutrition research, and allows us to make horse feeds that are not just high-quality, but also backed by science.
