Bracewell LLP is an international law firm with 395 lawyers in Texas, New York, Washington, D.C., Connecticut, Seattle, Dubai, and London. We serve Fortune 500 companies, major financial institutions, leading private investment funds, governmental entities and individuals concentrated in the energy, technology and financial services sectors worldwide. Bracewell and its attorneys are consistently recognized in publications like Chambers and Partners Global Guide, Chambers & Partners USA, and Legal 500 USA. Practices including energy, finance, environment, litigation, financial restructuring and technology regularly rank among the top firms in the U.S. The firm's attorney roster, as well as its alumni core, includes former and current U.S. Congressmen; federal appointments; ambassadors; advisers to Presidential Cabinet members; and state officials such as governors, legislators, senators and staff advisers to many of those positions. PRACTICE. The firm engages in a highly diversified general commercial practice, representing a wide variety of domestic and foreign clients ranging from individual entrepreneurs to large publicly-held corporations and governmental entities. As a result, the firm is departmentalized into four sections: Business and Regulatory, Litigation, Technology, and Government. The Business and Regulatory Section includes Capital Markets; Energy, Environmental, Finance, Infrastructure, International, M&A, Oil & Gas, Public Entities, Public Finance, Real Estate; and Tax practice groups. The Litigation Section includes the Financial Restructuring; and Labor and Employment sub-sections as well as Antitrust, Appellate, Energy, ITC, IP Litigation, Oil & Gas, Securities, Trademark and White Collar practice groups. The Technology Section includes Intellectual Property, Chemical, EE/Computer Science, Mechanical Patent Prosecution, Trademarks, and Technology Transactions practice groups. The Government Group includes the Government Relations and Strategy, and Policy Resolution practice groups. SUMMER ASSOCIATE PROGRAM. The firm's summer program is a great opportunity to experience the firm culture, work environment, areas of practice and the many things to do in each city. Summer associates are given a wide range of responsibilities and duties and will be supervised closely by both partners and associates. In order to enable summer associates to meet as many attorneys as possible, the program has included frequent lunches and dinners at local restaurants and attorneys' homes, a weekend retreat, and numerous professional sporting events. ASSOCIATE SELECTION AND PARTNERSHIP. Bracewell's success is attributed to our commitment to providing clients with the best possible legal service. This commitment is reflected in our efforts to recruit top legal talent. An individual's undergraduate and law school records, extracurricular activities and interests, leadership positions, maturity, poise, and experience and ambition are all important factors in assessing an individual for employment. Law review or similar journal experience is preferred. Since associates will find themselves working directly with clients early in their careers, a genial personality is also a significant factor. No one is hired as an associate by the firm unless he or she is believed to have the potential to become a partner. Those interested in pursuing employment discussions with the firm are encouraged to visit the firm's website, www.bracewelllaw.com, for current career opportunities. NALP is committed to helping make the legal profession accessible to all individuals on a non-discriminatory basis. NALP is opposed to discrimination based upon actual or perceived gender, age, race, color, religion, creed, national or ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, genetic information, parental, marital, domestic partner, civil union, military, or veteran status. In the past decade, public-private partnerships (P-3s) have become a popular tool, at least in concept, to help governments balance these tensions. P-3s have been touted as the answer for infrastructure and services that governments don’t have the resources to address. But, any budget offi cer or other public offi cial who has looked closely at the private sector soluti ons knows that you never get something for nothing. The private sector might be willing to carry risk the public sector doesn’t want, or provide capital sooner than the public sector capacity allows, but these benefi ts come at a cost; and, someti mes, that cost is hard to measure. At the same ti me, there can be a real benefi t for early delivery of a project the public wants to see complete, and creati ng synergies with private development can build economic momentum, encouraging growth and investment beyond an initi al P-3. How then, does a public enti ty know when a P-3 is good deal? The fi rst and most important rule of thumb is that you can’t measure what you don’t understand.
