Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Copyright by Lisa Ann Browne 2001 ABSTRACT The organ chorale (an organ composition based on a traditional German Protestant hymn) has enjoyed a continuous, 400-year history. Originating in Reformation Germany, it has long since become a universal genre, crossing denominational as well as geographic boundaries. The twentieth century in particular has been witness to a marked flourishing of the genre. But while the organ chorale itself has migrated beyond German- and Dutch-speaking regions, it seems that the bulk of modem research has not. Continued interest in German compositions seems a natural development of the long history of the genre, but this focus has tended to overshadow or neglect organ chorales from other parts of the world. Thus, this dissertation examines chorale-based organ works of six American composers of the late twentieth century: Timothy Albrecht, Michael Burkliardt, Paul Manz, Gerald Near, Charles W. Ore, and Donald Rotermund. In recognition of other scholars' work and in an attempt to ensure exposure of recent compositions, emphasis is placed on works published between 1989 and 2000. The late twentieth-century organ chorales included in this study rely heavily on music and musical traditions of the past; hence, they can logically be discussed within the parameters of the traditional Baroque types: melody, ornamental, and cantus-firmus chorales, and chorale canons, ricercares, fugues, and partitas. The dissertation begins with a historical survey of terminology and concepts associated with organ-chorale typology 11 and a chronological survey of composers of organ chorales since the baroque era. The author has conducted interviews with the six composers treated here. Biographical information on each is presented, together with their thoughts on liturgical context and compositional process. The existence of organ chorales in the late twentieth century prompts the question of their possible relation to their baroque coimterparts. Upon examination, it becomes readily apparent that there are some basic features that present-day settings hold in common with their predecessors. This familiarity with baroque compositional practice extends to the types of organ chorales as well. Despite these commonalities, certain compositional tendencies can be observed in the body of literature examined in this study that signify a break with baroque practice. Ill DEDICATION Dedicated to Fr. John Palmer, C.S.V. and Br. Augustine Mallak, O.S.B. IV ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my advisor. Dr. Charles Atkinson for his intellectual support and encouragement. Thanks also to Dr. Lois Rosow and Dr. Arved Ashby for their significant contributions to my document. { to,26?5 THE ORGAN WORKS OF HEALEY WILLAN THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State College in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Music By Robert L. Massingham, B. S., M. S. Denton, Texas August, 1957 PREFACE LHealey Willan occupies an unique position in Canadian Music and can be considered as that nation's "elder musical statesman." At the time of writing he is a septuagenarian and still very much active in his profession. Born and trained in England, he was well-established there when he was persuaded to come to Toronto, Canada, in 1913 at the age of thirty-three. Since that time he has contributed enor- iously to the growth of music in his adopted country, carry- ing on the traditions of his fine English background in music while encouraging the development of native individuality in Canadian music. Iillan has been first and foremost a musician of the church--an organist and choirmaster--a proud field which can boast many an eminent name in music including that of J. S. Bach. Willan's creativity in music has flowered in many other directions--as a distinguished teacher, as a lecturer and recitalist, and as a composer. He has written in all forms and for all instruments, but his greatest renown, at any rate in the TUnited States, is for his organ and choral works. The latter constitute his largest single body of compositions by numerical count of titles, and his organ works are in a close second place. iii Willants Introduction, Passaqaglia, and Fuue has been well-known for decades as one of the finest compositions in organ literature, enjoying a position alongside the organ works of Liszt, Yranck, and Reubke.

  • The Musical Heritage of the Lutheran Church Volume I
The Musical Heritage of the Lutheran Church Volume I Edited by Theodore Hoelty-Nickel Valparaiso, Indiana The greatest contribution of the Lutheran Church to the culture of Western civilization lies in the field of music. Our Lutheran University is therefore particularly happy over the fact that, under the guidance of Professor Theodore Hoelty-Nickel, head of its Department of Music, it has been able to make a definite contribution to the advancement of musical taste in the Lutheran Church of America. The essays of this volume, originally presented at the Seminar in Church Music during the summer of 1944, are an encouraging evidence of the growing appreciation of our unique musical heritage. O. P. The RECORDING Navigating, Coping & Cashing In Maze November 2013 Introduction Trying to get a handle on where the recording business is headed is a little like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall. No matter what side of the business you may be on— producing, selling, distributing, even buying recordings— there is no longer a “standard operating procedure.” Hence the title of this Special Report, designed as a guide to the abundance of recording and distribution options that seem to be cropping up almost daily thanks to technology’s relentless march forward. And as each new delivery CONTENTS option takes hold—CD, download, streaming, app, flash drive, you name it—it exponentionally accelerates the next. 2 Introduction At the other end of the spectrum sits the artist, overwhelmed with choices: 4 The Distribution Maze: anybody can (and does) make a recording these days, but if an artist is not signed Bring a Compass: Part I with a record label, or doesn’t have the resources to make a vanity recording, is there still a way? As Phil Sommerich points out in his excellent overview of “The 8 The Distribution Maze: Distribution Maze,” Part I and Part II, yes, there is a way, or rather, ways. But which Bring a Compass: Part II one is the right one? Sommerich lets us in on a few of the major players, explains 11 Five Minutes, Five Questions how they each work, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. with Three Top Label Execs In “The Musical America Recording Surveys,” we confirmed that our readers are both consumers and makers of recordings.

  • Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion from 1725: a Liturgical Interpretation
Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion from 1725: A Liturgical Interpretation MARKUS RATHEY When we listen to Johann Sebastian Bach’s vocal works today, we do this most of the time in a concert. Bach’s passions and his B minor Mass, his cantatas and songs are an integral part of our canon of concert music. Nothing can be said against this practice. The passions and the Mass have been a part of the Western concert repertoire since the 1830s, and there may not have been a “Bach Revival” in the nineteenth century (and no editions of Bach’s works for that matter) without Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s concert performance of the St. Matthew Passion in the Berlin Singakademie in 1829.1 However, the original sitz im leben of both large-scaled works like his passions, and his smaller cantatas, is the liturgy. Most of his vocal works were composed for use during services in the churches of Leipzig. The pieces unfold their meaning in the context of the liturgy. They engage in a complex intertextual relationship with the liturgical texts that frame them, and with the musical (and theological) practices of the liturgical year of which they are a part. The following essay will outline the liturgical context of the second version of the St. John Passion (BWV 245a) Bach performed on Good Friday 1725 in Leipzig. The piece is a revision of the familiar version of the passion Bach had composed the previous year. The 1725 version of the passion was performed by the Yale Schola Cantorum in 2006, and was accompanied by several lectures I gave in New Haven and New York City.
