With theexpansion of the Internet/World Wide Web, great attention has been focused ontraditional publication processes, changes to business models, implicationsfor intellectual property rights, and modes of communication. Thisstudy consequently examined recent literature on information technologyand scholarly journal publication to characterize the impact of the Internet/World Wide Web on the nature, function, and status of scholarly journal publishing in the last decade. The study focusedprimarily on the peer-reviewed journal article since this marks the entry ofinformation into the formal domain because the peer- reviewed journal articleis, and has been, for at least two decades, the most extensive mode foundin the published literature and represents the greatest amount of resources.This study is not a discussion of the whole process of scientificcommunication but instead an examination of a subset of that process:scientific journal publishing and how it may have been affected by the new information technologies. This effort covers, as noted, juried periodicalarticles with a lesser reliance on chapters in anthologies and monographs aswell as conference proceedings, dissertations, and reports from the "greyliterature" together with limited consultation with experts. Attention hasbeen focused on the period since 1994, the point at which theexpansion of the Internet and proliferation of communication technologies appears to haveintensified discussion of the future of scholarly publication, particularly in the sciences. The research conducted by King, McDonald, and Roderer in their1980 seminal study of the production, use, and economics of science journalsin the United States, together with work published in 2000 by Tenopir andKing, provides the starting point of this study. Treatment of copyright in the digital environment is evolving at an unprecedented rate. Copyright exists to protect the rights of an owner of an original piece of work by imposing restrictions on reuse but it does not always fit well with how we use and share information in the digital sphere.

The journal continues to have a broad audience and readers can enjoy high-quality research across theoretical and mathematical physics. This collection of highlights displays some of the most highly rated articles published in the journal during 2011. All of these articles were chosen primarily for their high-quality science. This selection displays the broad scope of the journal and demonstrates that it is a meeting place for researchers to share mathematically rich work across different disciplines. In 2011 we began to publish Insights: these are online, author-written news items highlighting the key achievements of recent work published in the journal to readers who might not be specialists in the field.
