The objectives of the Programme were to provide the long-term unemployed with opportunities to train or re- train, so that they might get more permanent work. This Programme funded a considerable number of environmental jobs, and provided the stepping stone for many ecologists to move into mainstream jobs. I have lost contact with most of the team members of this project, but am aware that at least one (apart from me) went onto a successful career in an ecological discipline. Looking back to the year of 1983-84, it is difficult to appreciate the achievement of the team. We commenced work in September 1983 and were due to report in late August 1984. The timing was unfortunate because we were unable to make best use of the year, with the winter occupying most of the project. -

A new endemic glass-snail, Oxychilus edmundi spec. nov., is described from the Porto valley on the western coast of the French island Corsica. The single sparse population belongs to the pre- sumed endemic radiation of the O. tropidophorus-group. The new species can be discriminated from its most similar relative, O. tropidophorus (J. Mabille, 1869), of which a topotype could be compared, by its more elevated spire and an extreme bottleneck in the penis, among other char- acters. For a long time the degree of endemism in the continental Mollusc fauna of the French Mediterranean Island of Corsica has been considerably underestimated compared to the large Italian Islands of Sardinia and Sicily. From the Italian Checklist (Bodon et al., 1995; Manganelli et al., 1995) a degree of endemism can be deduced of 20% for Sardinia and of 29% for Sicily. The publications of Réal & Réal (1988, 2000), on the other hand, reveal an endemism of only 4.5% for Corsica, the third largest West Mediterranean island after Sicily and Sardinia. -

Two species of pulmonate gastropods are described as new to science although their generic classifi ca- tion remains uncertain since only shells are available for study. The species might be troglodytes. Their shells indicate the presence of subterraneous material. Introduction In 1985 and following years, during several excursions in the eastern part of the Peloponnese, Greece, empty shells of two unknown pulmonate species were found. Their subgeneric or even generic classifi cation is doubtful because of the absence of anatomical data. Probably these species occur in a for humans nearly inaccessible habitat. The snails are most probably troglophilous, if not troglodytic. Their shells may serve as indicators of deposits of subterranean material, which is an argument in favour of naming these species despite the fact that their systematic position remains unclear. Waiting for more data might become a too long wait. Both species were also found in a deposit together with shells of Tsoukatosia liae Gitt enberger, 2000 (Clausili- idae, Serrulininae), a clausiliid species with a glassy transparent shell, also indicative of a subterranean habitat and hitherto known from its type locality only. -
Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland
Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland Introduction There are 50 known species of land snail found in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) which represents about half of the 100 UK species. However molluscs are an under-recorded taxon group so it is possible that more species could be found and equally possible that a few may now be extinct in our two counties. There was a 20 year period of enthusiastic mollusc recording between 1967 and 1986, principally by museum staff, which account for the majority of species. Whilst records have increased again in the last three years thanks to NatureSpot, some species have not been recorded for over 30 years. All our land snails are in the class Gastropoda and the order Pulmonata. Whilst some of these species require damp habitats and are generally found near to aquatic habitats, they are all able to survive out of water. A number of species are largely restricted to calcareous habitats so are only found at a few sites. The sizes stated refer to the largest dimension of the shell typically found in adult specimens. There is much variation in many species and juveniles will of course be smaller. Note that the images are all greater than life size and not all the to the same scale. I have tried to display them at a sufficiently large scale so that the key features are visible. Always refer to the sizes given in the text. Status refers to abundance in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55). However molluscs are generally under- recorded so our understanding of their distribution could easily change. -

Pearce Carnegie Museum of Natural History 4400 Forbes Avenue Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213-4080 ABSTRACT The land snails and slugs (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda and Pulmonata) of two national parks along the Potomac River in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia were surveyed in 2010 and 2011. A total of 64 species was documented accounting for 60 new county or District records. Paralaoma servilis (Shuttleworth) and Zonitoides nitidus (Müller) are recorded for the first time from Virginia and Euconulus polygyratus (Pilsbry) is confirmed from the state. Previously unreported growth forms of Punctum smithi Morrison and Stenotrema barbatum (Clapp) are described. Abstract Gastropods have never been studied in Punjab, Pakistan with reference to its diversity and distribution. Different ecological factors have been studied which affect the distribution of the snail in the agroecosystem of this region. Total number of 19290 snails specimens, were collected from different cropland areas of 24 villages of Faisalabad including sugarcane, wheat, fodder, vegetables fields and ditches. The specimens were identified on the basis of recent identification keys and diagrammatic description provided in them to understand the biodiversity in this region. The diversity index was found highly significant in sugarcane, wheat, fodder, and vegetables fields however the results were non-significant in case of ditches. The relative abundance was maximum in sugarcane and least in ditches. The diversity index was significantly high in all months except in April whereas the relative abundance was maximum in July and August. It can be concluded that due to environmental degradation and water pollution the snail diversity is non significant, in ditches however in the agroecosystem it is a pest. -

Mollusks : Carnegie Museum of Natural History 7/25/17 9:02 AM Land Snails and Slugs of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States Home Northeast Species States Image Gallery Land Snail Ecology Resources Contact Land Snails Zonitoides nitidus (Müller, 1774) Family: Gastrodontidae Common name: Black Gloss Identification Width: 6-8 mm Height: 3.6-4 mm Whorls: 4.5-5 The heliciform shell of Zonitoides nitidus is deep yellowish-brown and glossy, semi-transparent, with well- impressed sutures. The shell is umbilicate, with a simple, thin peristome and lunate aperture lacking teeth at any stage of growth. The embryonic whorl is smooth with the other whorls having finely, weakly marked transverse striae. Spiral striae are not present. The shell is a bit bigger and rounder with a larger aperture than its close relative Z. arboreus. The live animal’s body is black, making the shells of live specimens appear quite dark. There is a characteristic muted-orange spot on the mantle near the lip of the shell. Ecology This somewhat amphibious species is generally found on floodplains, streamsides, and in wetlands. In Maine it was present in a variety of wetlands, from acid bog to rich shrub swamp (Nekola, 2008). Its distribution can be quite patchy. Zonitoides nitidus feeds upon rotting vegetation, fungi and fruit (Müller, 1774, in AnimalBase, Photo(s): Views of a Zonitoides nitidus 2017). In Europe it may lay up to 30 eggs (Gassies, 1849 in AnimalBase, 2017). shell Taxonomy Originally described as Helix nitida by Müller in 1774, Binney later named it Zonites nitidus in 1878.
