Instructional Guidance Tool BUFFALO PUBLIC SCHOOLS Instructional Guidance during Period of Extended Closure Buffalo Public Schools 712 City Hall 65 Niagara Square Buffalo, NY 14202 Phone: (716) 816-3500 1 2 BPS INSTRUCTIONAL GUIDANCE DURING PERIOD OF EXTENDED CLOSURE The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented hardship for families across the nation. As a district, our support for students and families must take into consideration the traumatic impact of this event. Together, while we continue to focus on comprehensive strategies to support student learning, we must also consider our students’ mental wellness. At the same time, the District recognizes that faculty and staff are also affected by the pandemic, and are being asked to deliver instruction that differs from our normal context. This document is intended to provide guidance for teachers and administrators as they implement the District’s remote learning initiative and will continue to be updated as new information becomes available. What Instruction Looks Like during the Closure Instruction may take different forms during this period of extended school closure. Computing devices have been distributed to students in grades 3-12 to facilitate remote learning. However,,some families struggle with connectivity at this time. The District learning packets are intended to support those families and other families who may want additional, alternative resources. In addition, teachers should continue to assign work to students as they have since March 18, in accordance with the District's NYSED approved alternative instruction plan required by Executive Order 202.4. Methods of Instruction Hard copy learning packets aligned to grade level state standards Remote learning o Teacher-posted assignments in Schoology or other electronic platforms o Activities from District courses in Schoology o Live, virtual lessons or videotaped lessons o Nearpod lessons o Readings or videos accompanied by a means to verify participation, including responding to questions, completing assignments or exit tickets, or student participation in online discussion boards o Emailed communication, assignments https://www.buffaloschools.org/coronavirus 3 o Completion of activities to complement core instruction using District- approved online programs including Moby Max, Lexia Core5 or PowerUp, myON, Think Central, Pearson Realize, NextLesson, and Quill o Virtual conferencing, office hours o Phone conversations and consultations Means of Demonstrated Student Academic Engagement There are numerous ways for students to demonstrate engagement with learning remotely. The District is particularly interested in collecting information about frequency, duration, and substance of instructional contact with students. Some forms of engagement will happen daily while other forms may occur weekly. Here are some examples: Schoology or eDoctrina logins Submission of completed assignments or assessments Completion of online assignments or assessments Completion of activities in District-approved online programs Participation in online discussion boards, chats, discussion threads Email exchanges regarding instruction Phone conversations regarding instruction Participation in virtual conferences or office hours regarding instruction Exchanges regarding instruction using Talking Points or other translation services Other digital communication with a family member which confirms student interaction/engagement (e.g., Class Dojo) Teletherapy including speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision services, hearing services and counseling Completion of Culturally and Linguistically Responsive reading and writing lesson activities (i.e., the Brownies' Books) provided via hard copy in learning packets and online in Schoology Other Non-academic Means of Student Engagement There are numerous ways for students to connect with schools and support wellness. Here are some examples: Email exchanges Phone conversations Virtual conferences https://www.buffaloschools.org/coronavirus 4 Participation in CSE actions (e.g., Annual Reviews) Communication through the BPS Hotline Communication with school psychologists, social workers, counselors Communication with Journeys End coaches or Cultural Resource Aides Exchanges using Talking Points or other translation services Participation in continued mentoring services (Say Yes) Continuation in Student Leadership activities (Inner High and WNY United Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse) Sustaining a connection with school-based partners Participation in virtual Saturday Academy Learning and Wellness activities Communication with School-Based health clinics and work with Supplemental Health Services Enlisting in college-going activities including completion and submission of: college applications-signed by school administrator; FAFSA submission, scholarship application(s); Say Yes financial aid assistance application Using District Materials Grades Subject Resources K-2 Reading Journeys/Think Central Lexia Core5 RAZ-Kids Headsprout Corrective Reading Reading Mastery myON SUTW Math Math Modules, Eureka videos Moby Max Finish Line workbook/online portal Zearn Grade 2 - Problems from Think Tanks Prodigy embarc online Star Math Khan Academy Science Pearson online resources and consumable workbook PBS Learning Media Brain Pop, Jr Learn at Home (NYCDOE) Moby Max Generation Genius – Science Videos/Lessons Social Studies NYS Social Studies Toolkit Art Davis Publications online Scholastic Arts online PBS Learning Media Music McGraw Hill Online Textbook Music Technology Resources BPO Broadcasts on Demand Health, Physical SPARK PE OPEN Education CATCH Health, Nutrition & PE Many applications are accessed through Clever / See departmental document for additional details https://www.buffaloschools.org/coronavirus 5 Using District Materials Grades Subject Resources 3-6 Reading During closure, grades 5-6 will use Journeys instead of the modules Journeys, HOT! Lost/Stolen iPads In the event a computer is lost or stolen, a police report must be filed immediately. A copy of the report should be brought to staff at the Center for Innovation, Technology and Training at 1515 South Park Avenue or emailed to [email protected] along with details about the student (name, school, grade). No replacement device will be issued without a police report. Note: The District will deactivate the device immediately upon receipt of report. Replacement Power Cords To date, approximately 1490 power cords have been replaced. Power cords will only be replaced at no charge if the old power cord is returned at the time of the requested replacement.

As your superintendent, my goal is to work with all of our stakeholders and ensure access to superior educational instruction for adult learners as well as K-12 students. The Adult Education Division of Buffalo Public Schools provides essential services to Buffalo and Western New York in a truly collaborative way. With partnerships at over 35 sites around the city, the division ensures that residents can receive the instruction and training they need for post-secondary education and career advancement, and the life skills preparation that will allow them to become productive and accountable citizens. We are the second largest school district in New York State, serving a diverse population. With over 6,000 adults enrolled in High School Equivalency classes (GED®), ESL courses and workforce training programs, we are playing a significant role in building a competitive workforce. Empowering adults with the job skills they need strengthens families and the community. Clearly, our most important job is to provide high-quality services to all of these constituents.
