That is how I feel about Mani Ratnam, esp after watching Alaipayuthey. I'd watch anything and everything he has made; every story, every scene, every shot, every frame. He makes the mundane feel cinematic and everyone else's cinematic feel mundane. He's a master of craft and yet all that people remember his films for are his stories, his art. He so efficiently manages for his craft to never overshadow his art, but it's always there, always making you smile, making you watch in awe and wonder. Mani Ratnam weaves magic on the screen in a way that no one ever has, because maybe no one ever could. At least not like him: like poetry on screen. Character's emotions slowly drive Ratnam's films; those emotions feel like a physical touch. My 2000s can't be the same without Ratnam & Ar Rahman. mani ratman confirmed wavy. I don’t love ALAIPAYUTHEY but I found it really sweet. Mani Ratnam tells a touching and largely grounded story with some really nice songs, good cinematography and a lovely couple. Where the first act feels like an ode to the idealization of young love the second act feels almost like a deconstruction of that idealization. There’s a moment where Karthik tells Shakthi that no matter how much they fight it shouldn’t show outside, and then brings up that their friends see them as an ideal couple. It feels like Mani Ratnam was trying to explore love not just as an emotion but as an ideal that we latch onto and sometimes impose on ourselves and others. The song sequence for Kadhal Sadugudu is kind of the summation of that ideal for Karthik and Sakthi, and perhaps that’s why it’s shot & edited in this dreamlike montage of intimate moments. Watching this for a hundredth time probably. Never gets old. The movie that I wanted to discuss today was Sakhi (the Telugu dubbed version of Alaipayuthey). Sakhi is directed by Mani Ratnam and stars Madhavan and Shalini in the lead roles. This is actually my fourth Mani Ratnam movie after Geethanjali, Yuva, and Raavan; I liked all of the movies so far except for Raavan. I feel the need to watch more of Mani Ratnam's movies though. The ones that I want to watch off the top of my head are Anjali, Roja, Bombay, Ok Bangaram, Dil Se, and Amrutha. I know I've seen parts of Bombay before and I've also seen Amrutha before when I was a kid but I only remember bits and pieces of it.
