A Class Topper Does Not Neccesarily Top in Life A class topper does not neccesarily top in life Updated on: Apr 15, 2010 Shiksha ExternalAuthors 40 Views If Jamshedpur born R Madhavan had followed his parents’ wishes he would have ended up becoming an engineer. But just like his character in 3 Idiots he followed his heart and today he is a well known actor in both the Hindi and Tamil film industries. “Under parental pressure, I did my B Sc electronics hoping to do one more year and getting my BTech degree. But by then I had realised that engineering was not my passion. Luckily for me though things changed in my third year.” He was not only nominated as India’s cultural ambassador to Canada but also was sent to England for field training as he was adjudged as the best NCC cadet in Maharashtra. “This exposure widened my horizons and gave me the confidence to do my own thing. So after my electronics degree, much against my parent’s wishes, I did my Masters in advertising and public relations.” He then came to Mumbai where he started teaching public speaking and communication. “I won the Indian Championship for Public Speaking and represented the Disclaimer: This PDF is auto-generated based on the information available on Shiksha as on 04-Jun-2020. nation at the Young Businessmen Conference in Tokyo, (1992.),” he recalls. TV stint Before becoming a film star, Maddy as Madhvan is popularly known, was a big Hindi TV star. “I started doing TV for a lark. My first show was an episodic for Yule Love Stories.” Then he went on to do, Tol Mol Ke Bol and Banegi Apni Baat. “My character in the latter was only supposed to be for just one episode, but it become so popular that it went to become a lead. It was this public and critical acclaim which made me think of taking acting seriously,” says he. His other well known idiot box projects were Saaya, Sea Hawks and Ghar Jamai. Tamil film industry Maddy’s first brush with celluloid came with the English film, Inferno in 1997. Later he did a Kannada flick, Shanti Shanti Shanti in 1999. I just said yes and packed my bags for Chennai.” He has done a number of hit movies down south. He did the role what Abhishek Bachchan did in Yuva in the Tamil version Aayutha Ezhuthu. Hindi journey He entered Bollywood with Rehna Hai Tere Dil Main (2001). His biggest Hindi hits apart from 3 Idiots, would be Rang De Basanti (2005) and 13 B (2009). “I really loved my work in Ramji Londonwaley (2005) unfortunately the film was not promoted well and I had to pay the price.” Maddy also won critical acclaim for his role as a troubled citydweller in Mumbai Meri Jaan (2008) based on the 2006 Mumbai train blasts. Although he accepts that 3 Idiots changed his life he Disclaimer: This PDF is auto-generated based on the information available on Shiksha as on 04-Jun-2020. does not think that it was his best work till date. “Anybody could have played my role; all they had to do was to act as a student.” The road ahead “Today”, he says, “The sky is the limit. I am getting good work.” Maddy requests all parents to let their children follow their dreams! “Marks don’t mean everything, tell me were people like Bill Gates or Albert Einstein class toppers? Even I failed in class VIII because my Hindi was bad. Today it’s the same command over the national language which allows me to be accepted in Bollywood.” Author: HT Horizons Date: 14th April, 2010 For further details about relared courses and colleges please click below: Disclaimer: This PDF is auto-generated based on the information available on Shiksha as on 04-Jun-2020. • TRACING the TEMPORAL ASSEMBLAGE of INDIAN MEDIA a Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School O
THE AFFECTIVE NATION: TRACING THE TEMPORAL ASSEMBLAGE OF INDIAN MEDIA A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Communication, Culture, and Technology By Lakshmi Padmanabhan, Bachelor of Arts Washington, DC April 28, 2011 Copyright 2011 by Lakshmi Padmanabhan All Rights Reserved ii THE AFFECTIVE NATION: TRACING THE TEMPORAL ASSEMBLAGE OF INDIAN MEDIA Lakshmi Padmanabhan, Bachelor of Arts Thesis Advisor: Jatinder P. Singh, Doctor of Philosophy. ABSTRACT This thesis examines two films – Slumdog Millionaire (Boyle, 2008) and Dostana (Mansukhani, 2008) to explore the circulation of national identities within these films and the circulation of the films themselves within larger discourses of the nation, particularly India. This thesis argues that our current cultural moment require changing understandings of the idea of ‘film’, to include its multiple networks of capital and affect, and a changing understanding of ‘nation’ as materially illustrated in these films. The aim of this thesis is to conceive of a way to understand films as a collection of temporalities, and to map the duration of these temporalities as they reveal the emerging networks of circulation that change the ontology of both film and nation. I also argue that the ‘nation’ is an affective construct, and that ‘nationness’ is the ‘trace’ or ‘residue’ that these films bear. This argument also marks a specific approach to the idea of a ‘nation’ itself that includes more than the boundaries of the state, or the ethnicity of the people, but begins to address the way objects possess certain national traces, particularly within cultural objects such as the arts.

  • AR Rahman and the Global Routes of Indian Popular Music
BEYOND KITSCH: A. R. RAHMAN AND THE GLOBAL ROUTES OF INDIAN POPULAR MUSIC Stephanie Lou Jackson A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: David Harnish, Advisor Esther Clinton Jeremy Wallach © 2010 Stephanie Jackson All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor At the 2009 Academy Awards, A. R. Rahman became the first Indian composer to win Best Score and Best Song (“Jai Ho”) for his music in the film, Slumdog Millionaire (2008). This event not only granted Rahman another prestigious accolade for his accomplishments as a popular film music composer (i.e., he has been awarded many times over in India for his music), but it gave Rahman new star-status recognition among a Western audience. Although enormously famous in India and well-known among the South Asian diaspora located throughout many parts of the world, Rahman remained, up until that time, virtually unknown among mainstream U.S. audiences. U.S. audiences today are perhaps more likely than a decade ago to recognize the sounds and images of Indian cinema known as Bollywood, a cultural artifact, once considered “kitsch,” that increasingly traverses international popular cultures. Consequently, the appeal of Rahman’s Bollywood music among a wider global audience (as presented in Slumdog Millionaire) coincides with the global circulation and consumption of Bollywood films and music in recent years. I suggest that the appeal for Rahman’s music outside of India cannot be explained by the Western fascination with the exotic “Other," but instead involves a cultural affinity for a type of style and sound set forth in Rahman’s music.
