  • Odessa Intercultural Profile
City of Odessa Intercultural Profile This report is based upon the visit of the CoE expert team on 30 June & 1 July 2017, comprising Irena Guidikova, Kseniya Khovanova-Rubicondo and Phil Wood. It should ideally be read in parallel with the Council of Europe’s response to Odessa’s ICC Index Questionnaire but, at the time of writing, the completion of the Index by the City Council is still a work in progress. 1. Introduction Odessa (or Odesa in Ukrainian) is the third most populous city of Ukraine and a major tourism centre, seaport and transportation hub located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea. Odessa is also an administrative centre of the Odessa Oblast and has been a multiethnic city since its formation. The predecessor of Odessa, a small Tatar settlement, was founded in 1440 and originally named Hacıbey. After a period of Lithuanian control, it passed into the domain of the Ottoman Sultan in 1529 and remained in Ottoman hands until the Empire's defeat in the Russo-Turkish War of 1792. In 1794, the city of Odessa was founded by decree of the Empress Catherine the Great. From 1819 to 1858, Odessa was a free port, and then during the twentieth century it was the most important port of trade in the Soviet Union and a Soviet naval base and now holds the same prominence within Ukraine. During the 19th century, it was the fourth largest city of Imperial Russia, and its historical architecture has a style more Mediterranean than Russian, having been heavily influenced by French and Italian styles.

Due to this fact, her films provide rich objects of research in Visual Culture Studies. This study is concerned with the audio-visual effects, images and scenes connected to the theme of grotesque in the auteur cinema of Kira Muratova. It searches for meanings, denotations and connotations in the films’ images as the essential elements of the films. Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media no. 17, 2019, pp. 275–279 DOI: https://doi.org/10.33178/alpha.17.28 Odessa Film Festival 2016: Purple Moving Images Kamil Lipiński The seventh edition of the Odessa Film Festival (OIFF) was held between 14 and 23 July 2016. As a young festival searching for its identity, the festival privileged not world-class film achievements, but emerging talents selected from world and Ukrainian cinema. Undoubtedly, the festival has been developed in recent years year in an attempt to progressively become a landmark of the contemporary cultural scene in Ukraine. A more positive consequence of film festivals as a global network is that they have opened up opportunities for filmmakers from traditionally “small” countries, by “levelling the playing field” (Elsaesser). In particular, by changing the image of the city, the Odessa Film Festival attempts to overshadow the fact that Ukraine is in a state of crisis in attracting new investment. OIFF attempts to revive the film culture of Odessa Film Studio, which was one of the leading studios in Eastern Europe specialising in coproductions with the Soviet Union until its twilight in the mid-1990s. Despite a difficult political situation, the Festival has started to enlarge, making progress in 2016 as it was substantially supported by the Ukrainian State Agency which promoted not only a national competition but also an international one. The question, however, was if the Festival could possibly restore the forgotten glory of Odessa’s image as a cultural centre of Eastern cinema. Leaving this question unanswered for the moment, let’s briefly mention that among the more prestigious venues that were used for screenings was the Opera Academic National Theatre and Ballet, reserved for the opening and closing ceremonies.

Dissertation Post-Soviet Transnational Urban Communities: Odessites, Petersburgers and Bakuvians at Home and Abroad Sevil Huseynova Philosophische Fakultät I Institut für Europäische Ethnologie der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Präsidentin: Prof. Dr.-Ing.

The chronology of the development of industrial architecture in Odessa against the background of the industrial history of Russia and Ukraine is considered. The main stages and time frames typical for Odessa are identified as pre-industrial (1791–1861), the stage of formation (1861–1917/20), industrial (1918/20–1985), and post-industrial (1986–present day). The paper presents a brief description of each stage along with the analysis of the current state of industrial architecture. In addition, the experience of the renovation of industrial facilities in Odessa is considered, and the main spectrum of new functions is revealed. Two types of renovation objects are identified: historically significant and typical. The renovation is considered as a method of stabilizing urban space. Keywords: Industrial architecture, renovation of industrial facilities, stabilization of urban space.
