The Story of Winnie The Pooh The story of Winnie The Pooh begins with , and English veterinarian who moved to at the age of eighteen. During World War I, Colebourn travelled by train to Valcarier, Quebec to get the boat to England. Along the way was a stop at White River, Ontario. This is where Colebourn bought a small black bear cub from a local hunter for the price of $20.

The small cub, named Winnie after Colebourn’s hometown, soon became his regiment’s official mascot and travelled with the soldiers to Salisbury Plains in England. In December 1914 Colebourn was called to fight in France. He left Winnie at the for safekeeping while he was away.

Winnie stayed at the zoo until Colebourn’s return in 1918. By this time, Winnie was doing so well at the zoo and the visitors loved him so much that Colebourn decided to donate Winnie permanently to the zoo so he could continue to entertain the children.

One of these children was little Milne, born in 1920. For his first birthday he re- ceived a . When he was five he met Winnie during one of his family’s visits. He loved the black bear and promptly renamed his own stuffed bear to Winnie The Pooh (Pooh was a swan that Christopher befriended and named).

The Story of Winnie The Pooh Christopher’s father, A. Al. Milne was already a successful writer and was inspired by his son’s adventures with Winnie. His first Winnie The Pooh book was “Winnie The Pooh,” published in 1926 was instantly successful.

Walt Disney had been reading stories about Winnie The Pooh to his own children and in 1961 he obtained the rights to them.

In 1966 the first featurette , “Winnie The Pooh and the Honey Tree,” was shown in theatres, soon followed by others as it was so popular and soon became known around the world.

It’s fascinating how circumstances collided in just the right way so that a little black bear cub from Canada made his way across the Atlantic Ocean and became a household name around the world.
