Steve White, Charles E. Gannon : Extremis (Starfire Book 6) before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Extremis (Starfire Book 6):

Interesting universe and alien species, tediously presented space battles.By DebThough the universe this set is in remains interesting, don't expect consistent characterization from the collaboration of Weber/White and don't expect to see Weber's typical story-telling tricks (wool-gathering on the bridge doesn't happen here, nor does the trick of following a space battle from the point of view of a fighter pilot). There's some very interesting potential with the invading aliens, but the interesting elements aren't really developed in this book (most of it happens off-screen or after the book ends). These aliens are having a crisis of faith, or identity, but their crisis could lead to interesting knock-on effects in the human society: the potential is implied, not developed.Instead, this book develops long--usually tediously presented--space battles, after long descriptions of newly developed, steadily more massive, ship designs. The readers know, going into each battle, who the winner has to be: the only tension, if there is any, is who will die (and that's mainly also easy to predict, given the character development--what there is of it in some cases). If you like stories because of the other things that are implied, the potential for you to fill in the wholes, there's some interesting stuff here. But if you just want an easy beach read that actually keeps you guessing, you might want to read something else.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Military Sci-FiBy Sci-Fi FanWow, I absolutely do NOT understand the poor reviews for this book!!! I myself have written short stories in the Starfire universe for over 15 years, and have been an avid fan for over 20. This book is an excellent example of the Starfire universe. Previously I have despised what Steve White has written (he's just a lousy author), and only his co-author has made anything he wrote worth reading IMO. His new co- author, Gannon, is an exceptional writer as well. If you actually LOOK at the way Gannon writes, he does so in an excellent manner; he almost never repeats the same words over and over, like many authors do, his Starfire lingo/concepts and real life scientific information are dead on, and his conflicts in space are enjoyable and really different than many others I have read. This books main problem is using Ian Tevayne and Li Han again: please please please after 100+ years can't we have some new characters? Also, IMO characters are not well developed in the story, but the dialogue is interesting and NOT boring, like many novels. And I absolutely LOVE the creation of new words and concepts that Gannon has produced in this new novel. This book was FAR superior than Exodus, the preceeding book. Well done Mr. Gannon!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Fine New Entry in the Starfire Universe!By Steven WoodcockAnother fine entry into the Starfire saga!I first cut my teeth on these games back in the late 1970's when I purchased the first Starfire game. I played that puppy to death and happily discovered the second one (introducing fighters and carriers) soon after. I eventually bought all of their line of games, including the Strategic Starfire, and my friends and I played many battles across space over the years.A few years later I discovered the Starfire books, and was instantly hooked. This is the 8th (?) of these I think and it's excellent as always. In this semi- sequel to the 7th book, humanity has continued to expand out into the universe and has stumbled across another race which used sublight ships to flee their dying Empire. Their tactics are rather different this time around than those the offshoot race used last time, and Humans scramble to develop a defense that can be effective. In the meantime one of the aliens has discovered that Humans can communicate with them, even if in limited fashion, and tries to determine whether or not Humans are in fact sentient or not.Another great entry in the Starfire series; there's not much I can say without spoilers. I *can* say that it's well written, the battles are nicely done, and the evolution of technology continues to make sense within the Starfire universe.Having said that there's a bit too much introspection and "talking" back and forth with the aliens, and there's a subplot I personally found annoying and semi-pointless involving a rebellion taking the fight back to the aliens on one world. This an ACTION saga; there should definitely be more ACTION all around.A good book, especially if you're already a fan of the series. If you haven't discovered Starfire yet, pick up the first couple and see if you like them--my hunch is you'll be glad you did.

Steve White, Vietnam vet, long-time David Weber collaborator and co-author, with Weber, of the New York Times best-seller The Shiva Option, joins with Analog contributor and military SF scholar Charles E. Gannon to carve another notch in the Starfire adventure saga.An implacable foe with telepathic cohesion in battle, near-immortality, and eons-advanced engineering skills threatens to wipe humanity from the galaxy. What’s more, they’ve overcome their one weakness–no faster-than-light travel–and have followed humanity through our star gates and beyond. But humans are the master of adaption, and have got a counterpunch of devastating proportions in reserve. Now a hard- bitten and brilliant admiral must face down renewed alien attack and somehow communicate to the enemy that if he is forced to use his ultimate military option, galactic civilization itself may come to a fiery end.At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).Steve White was an officer in Naval Intelligence, and served in the Mediterranean and the Vietnam War Zone. In addition to the Starfire series with David Weber, he has written several popular science fiction adventure novels for Baen. They include the trilogy comprising The Disinherited, Legacy and Debt of Ages, which combine fast-paced space opera with Arthurian mythology. He has also written the galaxy-spanning adventure Prince of Sunset, and its sequel Emperor of Dawn. His latest is Eagle Against the Stars. He currently works for a legal publishing company in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is married and has three daughters.
