I hate writing thisBy WildwilyIf you love Weber and have been desperate for the return of Bahzell, you will enjoy this book...unless you wanted things to happen.I like the world he's built; I love the characters. Even their speech patterns and mannerisms make for an enjoyable read. But the pages of exposition, the sheer number of words makes it drag. A single evening can last for chapters. Every. Single. Glance. Is fraught with meaning that must be explored. Gee, does the 1400 yr old wizard have deeply laid plans? The end is so obvious it is anticlimactic. The next book was foreshadowed so heavily I needed extra lights to read!!!!I enjoyed the original books because I didn't know where they were going. This was so formulaic...each new character or plot device was foreordained to the point you expected it before it arrived. This was not worthy.I do NOT recommend this book if you are unfamiliar with either Mr Weber or the world of Bahzell. I have come to expect better...15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Bit of a stumble in the first few chapters, but comes along well!By DebI'm a fan of Weber's, so some of my response could clearly be me being too picky: he can do better than this. Some of the characters were from another series, and Weber has a bit of a problem with their voices, but that works out by the middle of the book for the most significant of these characters. Near the start of the book, there's some word choice issues: the language was more formal than the tone of the books usually set in this world, which made it feel more like the Safehold books. Good books, don't get me wrong, but again, Weber had to settle his mind back into how he sounds when presenting this world. My other problem was predictability: again, I've read a lot of Weber, so I can tell when he's foreshadowing and what he's going to be doing, but it all came off as too heavy handed this time.BUT! By the middle of the book most of that stuff works itself out, and even though the foreshadowing removed too much of the suspense, the story is still loads of fun and the characters often shine very clearly. Very much worth a read, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next book. But this is just not starting out with the strength of some of his other series (again, Safehold comes to mind as one of his stronger starts). This is Weber, I fully expect the follow-on books to be great.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Does not read like WeberBy Gordon S. GroffSomething's up with this one. I was thrilled to see a continuation of this series, but the characters seem like 2 dimensional representations from his prior novels. Not like the rich ones we were used to. If I had to guess, this was written by a skilled writer who really read and used all the gags and gaffs from the prior novels - to excess. Does a novel have to declare a ghost writer if used? It just does not read like Weber to me, at all, at all. As far as lengthy dissertations - even these were not Weber-style. Instead of hearing lengthy, dreary expositions of all the character's inner thoughts and rationalizations, these lengthy, dreary expositions were more filling in the history and background of the series. While it's a pretty good simulacrum, something's off. Does anyone know if he used another writer to continue the series? #1 in a NEW EPIC FANTASY SERIES by 28-time New York Times and international best seller David Weber, set within his Bahzell Bahnakson/War God universe. A swordsman who has been robbed of his past must confront an evil wizard with a world at stake.Know thyself. Its always good to know who you are, but sometimes thats a little difficult. Kenhodan has no last name, because he has no past . or not one he remembers, anyway. What he does have are a lot of scars and a lot of skills some exhilarating and some terrifying and a purpose. Now if he only knew where he'd gotten them and what that purpose was . Wencit of Rum, the most powerful wizard in the world, knows the answers to Kenhodan's questions, but he can't or won't share them with him. Except to inform him that he's a critical part of Wencit's millennium-long battle to protect Norfressa from conquest by dark sorcery. Bahzell Bahnakson, champion of Tomanak, doesnt know those answers and the War God isn't sharing them with him. Except to inform Bahzell that the final confrontation with the Dark Lords of fallen Kontovar is about to begin, and that somehow Kenhodan is one of the keys to its final outcome. Wulfra of Torfo doesn't know those answers, either, but she does know Wencit of Rm is her implacable foe and that somehow Kenhodan is one of the weapons he intends to use against her . assuming she can't kill both of them first. But in the far northern port city of Belhadan, an eleven-year-old girl knows the answers to all of Kenhodan's questions. and dares not share them with anyone, even the ancient wild wizard who loves her more dearly than life itself. It's not easy to face the future when you can't even remember your own past, but if saving an entire world from evil sorcerers, demons, devils, and dark gods was easy, anyone could do it. About The Sword of the South: "Weber returns to his epic fantasy world last depicted in War Maidrsquo;s Choice . With the full pantheon of gods, wizards, elves, dwarves, and dark sorcery, this title is guaranteed to win the favor of Robert Jordan and Michael Sullivan enthusiasts.

Interesting universe and alien species, tediously presented space battles.By DebThough the universe this set is in remains interesting, don't expect consistent characterization from the collaboration of Weber/White and don't expect to see Weber's typical story-telling tricks (wool-gathering on the bridge doesn't happen here, nor does the trick of following a space battle from the point of view of a fighter pilot). There's some very interesting potential with the invading aliens, but the interesting elements aren't really developed in this book (most of it happens off-screen or after the book ends). These aliens are having a crisis of faith, or identity, but their crisis could lead to interesting knock-on effects in the human society: the potential is implied, not developed.Instead, this book develops long--usually tediously presented--space battles, after long descriptions of newly developed, steadily more massive, ship designs. The readers know, going into each battle, who the winner has to be: the only tension, if there is any, is who will die (and that's mainly also easy to predict, given the character development--what there is of it in some cases). If you like stories because of the other things that are implied, the potential for you to fill in the wholes, there's some interesting stuff here.

But he and Eric Flint did publish Crown of Slaves in 2013 that tells us more about developments the Mesan Alignment and the planet Mesa. If we are lucky, Mr. Weber will resume the Harrington series in 2016. An early chapter shows that due to some unexpected reversals, the Alignment has to initiate the next major phase of its long-term plan before it is it wants to.Anton Zilwicki, Manticorersquo;s top spy, and Victor Cachet, Havenrsquo;s top spy, decide that they have to return to Mesa to find out more about the Mesan Alignment. Good pulp reading but a little annoying. How can one race form one solar system provide a fleet powerful enough to challenge hundreds of united worlds? Especially when they cannibalize their large space ships to create kinetic strike weapons. Worlds which have fought intergalactic wars never considered a defense against kinetic strikes?Ok mindless space battle death and destruction but characters never really develop and space battles seem mindless.
