Coastline

The coastline of the North Coast and Cumbraes boasts a number of nationally significant sites. The Portencross Coast is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and includes a great variety of seashore habitats with interesting plants, the best mud flats for wildfowl and waders in the Clyde. The coastline is also valued for its geology as there are fine exposures of upper Old Red Sandstone ranging from cannon-ball conglomerate to sandstones, with striking outcrops of igneous intrusions and rucked sediments. POINTS OF INTEREST 1 Outdoor Centre On , Kames Bay is designated as a SSSI and is the only example of a shore 2 Golf Course dominated by sand on the Island. It is classed as the classic Scottish site for the study of 3 Glaid Stone Viewpoint intertidal marine biology, having contributed more to the understanding of marine biology 4 Putting Green than any other stretch of beach in . The bay represents the seaward extension of a 5 Museum (Benedictine Monastery) geological fault line and the rocks on the western side of the bay are composed of old red 6 Site of sandstone and sandstone conglomerate, whilst the eastern side of the bay is of lower Carboniferous origin. 7 Margaret's Law/Haco's Tomb/Haylie - (Chambered Cairn) 8 Haylie Brae Viewpoint Ballochmartin Bay on the Island is also a SSSI and is the most varied section of coast on 9 Largs Golf Club the Island.
